17.01.2022 Before every session, I take a moment to remember my humanity. There is no experience that this man has that I cannot share with him, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human. No matter how deep his wound, he does not need to be ashamed in front of me. I too am vulnerable. And because of this, I am enough. Whatever his story, he no longer needs to be alone with it. This is what will allow his healing to begin. - Carl Rogers

15.01.2022 STEPHEN PORGES on social connecting in the time of physical distancing! Take a listen, or you can read the Transcript here. Even speaking to someone 6 feet away is better than nothing! and don't forget to thank your grocery store workers. Stay connected.

15.01.2022 Limited places, please register to avoid disappointment. ROAR a five week group for women who have experienced or are currently experiencing the effects of domestic violence. It is free of charge to those who meet eligibility criteria. Registration is essential. Exposure to violence leads to poor physical health and increases the risk of developing a range of health problems. Violence against women can have a profound impact on a woman’s emotional and mental health. The psyc...hological consequences of violence are comparable to veterans of war. An Australian study found that domestic violence was the leading contributor of death, disability and illness in women aged 15-44 years of age (VicHealth; 2014 p.10). Women who have experienced domestic violence are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness. They are more likely to be on medication to treat depression and anxiety (Loxton D, Schofield M, Hussain R & Gita M 2006). Recent studies have found that women who had experienced gender based violence (domestic violence included) are more likely to experience a mental illness. The rates in the sample study were 77% anxiety disorders, 52% mood disorders, 47% substance use disorders, 56% post-traumatic stress disorder and 35% for suicide attempts. There is a failure of mental health services in identifying domestic violence as a common factor in women’s mental health problems (Lundy & Grossman 2001). The greater frequency of depression and anxiety among abused women highlights the link between the two (Taft 2003 p. 9). Interventions with women who have experienced domestic violence and have a presenting mental illness need to be considered in combination to better understand and address the relationship between domestic violence and women's health.

14.01.2022 The real work between therapy sessions. The fine line between carrying your client and ensuring you continue to enhance your competence as a therapist.

14.01.2022 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner... Only 52% of women married or in a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use and health care Worldwide, almost 750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday; while 200 million women and girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) 1 in 2 women killed worldwide were killed by their partners or family in 2017; while only 1 out of 20 men were killed under similar circumstances 71% of all human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 of these women and girls are sexually exploited Violence against women is as serious a cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age as cancer, and a greater cause of ill health than traffic accidents and malaria combined. https://www.un.org/en/events/endviolenceday/

13.01.2022 It never ceases to amaze me the research into mental health, beyond the mind and into the functions of our body. Interestingly elevated and persistent stress leads to inflammatory responses. Possible link to Trauma = inflammation = basis of disease both mental and physical

04.01.2022 Covid 19 and our mental health As we enter unprecedented challenges (for this generation) it becomes apparent that our mental wellness is going to need extra nourishment. Navigating the constant flow of information, the velocity of changes, the disruption to normalcy and the ongoing adjustment to our settings causes emotional and mental imbalance. Beyond this knowing,we may not notice the impact our thoughts have on our body and perhaps we haven't considered the language in w...hich our body communicates; function and energy. Despite evidence of the accumulative impact of stress on our physical health most of the strategies for managing our mental health seem to exclude the vessel of our emotions, OUR BODY. NOW more than ever is the time to integrate a body "therapy" into our everyday routine. Qigong an ancient practice, with a modern day relevance (critical relevance) has been scientifically proven to not only help manage our stress levels and our mood but also to strengthen our immune system. Qigong is a goldfield of benefits, why not score some in today's much needed climate. I highly recommend this video as a starting point. It is highly explanatory and provides a paced introduction to qigong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyINAjEoTIs

02.01.2022 This is a must watch capturing the power of the human mind, body and soul. Empowerment starts with the desire to make changes. Listen to these amazing stories of people who have beaten the odds and recaptured the power within us to achieve the impossible. This documentary also explores the power of our emotions, the embodiment of chronic stress and the power we have to access therapies to reverse the affect of stress on our mind, body and soul. The power to be exceptional lies within.

01.01.2022 Grounding has many benefits some cognitive others surprisingly visceral. Grounding can be as simple as walking barefoot on the earth paying attention to the sensations and allowing gravity to engage the bulk of the work or by using your senses to distract your mind. In this article Dr Arielle Schwartz outlines the premise of grounding with some concrete try it yourself strategies. Grounding invites you to sense your body, notice your tension patterns, and surrender the weight of your physical body into gravity to feel the support of the earth. As a resource for trauma recovery, grounding can help you reclaim a sense of safety, feel rooted in the present moment, and strengthen your resilience. -Dr. Arielle Schwartz

01.01.2022 Signature Psychology and Consultancy Services would like to invite you to R.O.A.R. A five week practical skills and psychoeducation group for women who have experienced the effects of domestic violence. I often hear women questioning whether their experience of domestic violence is really ‘that bad’. Some hesitate to accept their experiences of violence especially if there is little to no physical assaults. Domestic violence covers a range of behaviours including intimidatio...n, threats, put downs, manipulation, financial and social control, jealousy, spiritual abuse and maternal alienation (e.g. when the woman is labelled as a bad, unworthy mother and the use of children). All these behaviours have a profound effect on health and wellbeing. Domestic violence remains the leading preventable contributor to death and illness for women aged 18 to 44. The effects on health and well-being are devastating ranging from severe complex trauma presentations to preventable and chronic illnesses. There is a growing body of evidence showing that early psychological trauma increases your chances of developing cancer. If you feel you would benefit from learning about domestic violence and skills and strategies on how to safety plan, cope and heal, please contact signature psychology on (02) 9750 5607 or text 0451 824 845. Please note this group is not a group where you are required to share your experiences. You can choose to attend in person or via video call.
