It’s the fact that it’s the one time of year lots of people give them selves permission to dress up, to step into character. Rather than dreaming about the races, maybe we need to turn that into how we dress all year round. If there’s one thing isolation time has taught me, it’s the power of dressing up to change how one feels. Superficial, but also profound.

13.01.2022 Process for your Friday night. Started with this Venetian printed velvet. Then black skirt, then red skirt, then a bow, then no bow. I find the more I develop as a designer the more I move toward simplicity. Good fit, string silhouette, very carefully considered accessories. I find I’m very bored with lace and really love striking, quality fabrics with a point of interest, be it colour, texture, pattern. Have a great weekend all! X
12.01.2022 With everything that’s happening right now it’s hard to think about anything else, which is a good thing. It’s necessary. It’s overdue. My privilege is something I can’t ignore any longer. Whenever I have this feeling, this internal aching, I turn to education first. Because perception is the key to change. And the way to change perception is via education. The first thing I did was turn to YouTube and search for something that might help me understand how I could help as a designer, and use my platform. And this amazing model @eboneedavis ‘s TED talk called ‘Black Girl Magic in the Fashion Industry’ came up. And it made me hopeful, that I can in some way help this situation. I have linked it in my stories if any industry friends wonder what we can do to help.

07.01.2022 Wow. Facebook memory came up with my first ever piece, this skirt for my sister. I had literally only learnt how to make a basic skirt pattern and use a sewing machine 2 months before this. I stitched every spare minute and made my sister this skirt with lace from a little cheap fabric store on Sydney Rd Brunswick. And that was it, the skirt that got me addicted, the first time I visualised something and then made it, from scratch. I still love it today also can’t believe I’ve been sewing 7 years now. The longest but also fastest 7 years of my life. They say it takes 10,000 hours to become a master of any field. Reckon I’m closer to 20,000 at a rough estimate, and it’s only the beginning
07.01.2022 One of the things I hav loved honing over the years is the fit of a garment. And the more my style develops, the more important this becomes to me. With fashion moving towards simplicity, good fit is the one thing that should shine. And I think as designers find their style, it’s so important to master a good fit before trying to be avant-garde and experiment with whacky wild shit. Prove you can fit a classic piece before you throw the baby out with the bath water. Learn the ...rules inside out so you can break them like a boss. Because if you don’t, you’ll know that that ‘impostor syndrome’ you feel isn’t actually impostor syndrome, it’s a lack of technical skill. Challenge yourselves, push your ability to fit a body well and flatter a client’s shape, then have your fun. This pic shows puckering of one of my samples that never made it to production. You can see all the bends and puckering. It’s not rocket science. You pin a bit here, fold a bit there, and you fix it. You keep going till it’s right. Till there’s no folds and puckering and pulling. To all the designers who try their best and really push for that perfect fit, I applaud you, and thank you. Continue to be the benchmark of excellence in an industry that’s getting flooded with influencers releasing active wear and calling themselves designers. They aren’t. 07.01.2022 That look I give anyone blocking a photo location. Fun fact: I’ve been asked to leave government buildings (and the cathedral) about 10-15 times. Oh, and my sister nearly bashed the security guard at the Melbourne town hall when he tried to stop the second pic on her wedding day. Nobody fucks with the Montesanos, especially when one is wearing a crown.

05.01.2022 I love this gown for a few reasons. I cried like a baby the morning of this shoot because I didn’t think I’d finish this dress in time, it was the third of 3 gowns. 3 weeks before this shoot, I ended up in hospital from a leg issue that stemmed from consistently working 20 hour days between teaching and stitching. I still think back and have no idea how I did it. I can’t even count how many nights I didn’t go home but slept in my sewing chair with a pillow laid on my sewing m...achine. The amount of times I’d hear the garbage truck come at 4am-ish and realise I wouldn’t be sleeping that night. This is the price of an all consuming passion and a calling you were born for. This gown pushed me to the brink, any designer who’s sewn leather will know how hard draping layers of leather on a full corset structure would’ve been. But I did it. And I still love it after all these years. See more

02.01.2022 Because you all love seeing the process.... a constant trial and error till it gets all the elements right. When your gut says it’s prefect. Note the lace sleeve that I ditched after a full day’s appliqué to edit to plain polka dot. Also the peplum idea which morphed into the long side train we ended with. This was the widest scallop detail I’ve done on a gown.
