24.01.2022 Courtesy of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance - This public health poster was part of a NSW government campaign to limit the spread of the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918-1919. You may know the Australian illustrator and author May Gibbs, who used familiar characters from her children’s books at the time to encourage children to wear masks to reduce the spread of the deadly infection. #whenliteracymeetspandemics #communication #morethanwords

22.01.2022 Over the past six weeks, Signs and Sounds has had the pleasure of hosting a student who is in the Speech Pathology Program at The University of Sydney. We are very proud to continue to be one of the private speech pathology clinics in Sydney who are supporting students in this way. We would sincerely like to thank Jess for the amazing amount of work she has done with some of our families, and we wish her all the best with finishing her studies. Congratulations also goes to o...ur Senior Speech Pathologist, Laura, for supervising a student for the first time! We’re sure Jess has walked away with some wonderful experiences! Thank you also to the families who have allowed Jess to work with their children. Your support, as always, has been invaluable!

22.01.2022 How fantastic! If you want to know how critical speech pathologists are to COVID-19 patients coming out of ICU, here are two speech pathologists being interviewed on a morning show in the UK #speechpathology #inthetimeofcovid https://www.facebook.com/kathleen.feeney.750/videos/10158617401501522/

15.01.2022 Behaviour as a form of communication: What's the issue? All hail Pamela Snow! Who is Pamela Snow you might ask?! Pamela is a Professor of Cognitive Psychology in the School of Education at La Trobe University. She is a registered psychologist who qualified originally in speech pathology. Check out one of our favourite pieces from her blog (The Snow Report)! http://pamelasnow.blogspot.com//behaviour-as-form-of-commu

10.01.2022 For many of our clients, getting a throat and nose swab if they have to be tested for COVID-19 gives their families (and us!) the jeebies But The Boston Hospital has developed some great social stories that can be used to help kids know what to expect. Check out the link below to learn all about the throat swab...and there’s another just like it for the nose swab! 09.01.2022 To all of our clients and their families, Your health, and the health of our staff, is paramount. In light of the current health environment, and the need to continue to deliver services, we wanted to let you know what Signs and Sounds would be doing over the next week. Firstly, we will be continuing with business as usual with the following either escalated or introduced:... 1. Reducing contact of objects - Our main entrance door will remain open the whole time anybody is entering and exiting to minimise contact with it. Easily accessible toys will be packed away to minimise contact. An attempt will be made to ensure that each speech pathologist has their 'own' of something to reduce sharing (e.g. stamps/stickers). All cloth towels will be replaced by paper towels that can be discarded into the bin after use. You may be asked to complete a Payments Authority Form to allow electronic transfer of payments to minimise shared contact of cards etc. 2. Cleaning of hands and surfaces - Upon entering the clinic, all clients will need to wash/sanitise their hands (we will work with you for sensory needs). Upon exiting a clinic room, the following will be wiped EVERY TIME: door knobs, children's desks and children's chairs. The reception counter will be wiped after every client. Speech pathologists will wash/sanitise between every client. Upon exiting the clinic, clients will need to wash their hands. 3. Temperature - The heat setting will be increased to ensure a warm setting. 4. Sessions - For face-to-face sessions, we will be implementing a distance of at least 1.5 metres wherever possible when working with clients. We will also be working to set up telehealth sessions AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE to reduce attendance at the clinic (see point 5 below). Please minimise the number of people who are attending sessions. 5. Telehealth sessions - Clients will be asked whether they would like to continue services through telehealth. Further information about setup and procedure will be provided at your next clinic appointment. 6. Please do not attend if you are unwell. Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all try to negotiate this time. Please feel free to contact the clinic should you have any questions. Signs and Sounds Team

08.01.2022 If you’re at home with children, here’s why rotating toys that they play with is a good idea Add to all of this how much communication you can model for each toy

07.01.2022 Communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight. That’s why every year we host Speech Pathology Week to make more Australians aware of the 1.2 million Australians with communication disability. The speech pathology profession plays a crucial role working with Australians with communication disability to ensure everyone is communicating with confidence. www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/spw2020

06.01.2022 Yes! We are still open for business! Do you need a speech pathology service? With 90% of our clients now successfully receiving our services through telepractice, we are still offering some face-to-face services for NEW and EXISTING clients who need it at our clinic in Marrickville. For a list of our services, please visit: https://www.signsandsounds.com.au/services/... As the COVID-19 virus continues to present challenges to many parts of our daily life, the health and safety of everyone continues to be something we take extremely seriously. Should you want to attend our clinic, please note that the number of people on the premises is being restricted to protect both you and our staff, with clients preferably only being accompanied by one carer for their appointment. Please do not visit our clinic if you: - Have flu-like or respiratory-illness symptoms - Have had contact with anyone confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19 - Should be in self isolation after an exposure risk We are also continuing to enforce social distancing conditions and card and contactless payments, and will require you to wash your hands upon entry. We would continue to invite you to communicate any financial hardship to us at any time over the next few months. Together, we will work to support each other. Please, stay safe - the Signs and Sounds team.

05.01.2022 To all of our clients at Signs and Sounds, The COVID-19 virus presents an unprecedented challenge to our services at Signs and Sounds. The health and safety of everyone continues to be something we take extremely seriously. We have implemented, and will continue to implement, a wide range of strategies designed to minimise risk. These have been communicated to all families either in person or by telephone over the past week. Some clients have ceased face-to-face services, whi...le others are continuing to move to telepractice services. At this point in time, we are continuing face-to-face services while maintaining social distancing rules and are ready to proceed with telepractice services for clients who wish to do so. Please note that this is, however, a rapidly evolving situation and if anything changes, we will let you know immediately. A number of families have decided to continue attending face-to-face services for various reasons. We understand individual decisions not to move to telepractice just yet and ask that you not attend at the clinic if you or your child is unwell. Should the clinic need to close, be reassured that our staff are already prepared for online services. We would also invite you to communicate any financial hardship to us at any time over the next few months. Together, we will work to support each other. Please contact us if you have any concerns or questions. Please, stay safe - the Signs and Sounds team.

03.01.2022 Self affirmations...using picture symbols of course! Saw this and thought it might be helpful for lots of us to be reminded of this! #communication #allthewordsallthetime
