20.01.2022 Dear members of the Sikh community. Free masks for the community We are painfully aware of the suffering caused by this lethal virus, COVID 19 and how it has impacted all the people in the world, the very thought of it sends shivers in the spine. ... The fact that so far none of our community member has been reported to be a victim of COVID19, our community has shown great discipline by complying with the government directives, but we shouldn’t be complacent. Being aware how the virus spreads and renders vulnerable ( senior citizens) more vulnerable. As the restrictions are being released slowly, keeping distance will be a thing of the past and more and more people will be rubbing shoulders with other people we must be careful and protect ourselves. In an effort to help our community members to protect themselves against the deadly virus the Sikh Council Of Australia has taken initiative and procured face masks which will be distributed free of charge to our community members. I would ask the secretaries or the presidents of the Gurudwaras to collect them , as many as they want, for free distribution to their members, by ringing the undersigned, from Austral Gurudwara. Any person can collect the mask from Giani Sukhvinder Singh or Balvinder Singh at Austral Gurudwara. Yours sincerely, Bawa Singh Jagdev OAM. .Secretary, National Sikh Council of Australia Inc. 20.01.2022 Some of you may be aware of information sharing provisions under Chapter 16A of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998. This outlines how certain organisations should be able to provide and receive information that promotes the safety, welfare or well being of children or young persons. The Office of the Children’s Guardian has been liaising closely with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) about the circumstances in which religious bodies m...ay be considered ‘prescribed bodies’ under the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 for the purposes of information exchange. The ability to obtain information under the prescribed body provisions is critical for religious bodies now that they are relevant entities under the Reportable Conduct Scheme. This will help avoid duplication and ensure better outcomes for children, for example by unnecessarily re-interviewing children. To find out more, please refer to the Religious bodies FAQ section on the OCG website. We will also be holding a short information session prior to ‘Understanding Reporting Obligations’ webinar on 2 Sept from 9.30-10am where we will provide more detailed information. You can register for the update and/or reporting webinar here. Implementing the Child Safe Standards: A Guide for Faith-Based Organisations The Office of the Children’s Guardian has released a guide for faith-based organisations to help them implement the NSW Child Safe Standards. The guide gives practical tips and provides examples which showcase how different organisations are already implementing the standards and how they have established systems to prevent, detect and respond to child abuse.
