17.01.2022 There are upcoming changes to script repeat collection and ordering from June 1, the main changes are as follows: 1. If you order scripts over the phone it will now cost $15, this includes bulk-billed patients. It is cheaper to order online costing only $10, you can do this from our website. 2. We will not give script repeats for patients that have not seen their GP in the last 6 months, or if you are ordering repeats for Opioids or Benzos class medications. You will need ...to book an appointment with your normal GP to organise these. 3. You can still book an appt with a Doctor to get a script, we will have set times when this can be done this is bulk-billed for eligible patients. Why are we doing this? Our aim is to significantly reduced waiting times for you when to come to collect your script.

16.01.2022 This year, Silky Oaks Medical will be 31 years old. The passing of years allows some time to reflect on a body of good general practice. It also invites reflection on what has changed and then where change might lead us next. When we look back, we might remember general practice without computers, mobile phones and the challenges of doctors writing not printing scripts. It's hard to imagine that Dr Mercer was young and had the energy to deliver babies, help keep Wynnum Hospit...al running and join a broad community protest against an ICI chlorine plant proposed for the Brisbane port area. Medical students of that era were taught that 90% of the diagnosis of illness was available in your story, how a patient describes their illness to a doctor. the explosion of pathology tests and technologies to investigate symptoms gives an impression that the space for talking and listening is getting crowded out. Some things never really change. Evidence-based medicine can confirm that kindness and compassionate care is good for us when we are ill or facing health challenges. The introduction of 'patient-centred care' as a core philosophy of GPs has been the platform that researchers such as Barabara Starfield have recognized is a strong plus for general practice. Indeed, this type of general practice with the support of 'evidence-based medicine' is why our community is generally healthier than 31 years ago. This picture is only complete when we recognise that the partnerships for good health created through general practice lead to people making positive changes. For instance, smoking rates have fallen from 29% to 15%. Well Done! Today, there are amazing opportunities to eat well, exercise more and moderate alcohol use. At Silky Oaks we have a learning culture; always seeking to know and apply knowledge better. This year 60 young doctors will have successfully transitioned from hospital medicine to energetic, competent primary care doctors through practical training at Silky Oaks. Together with you, we are attempting to adapt to the knowledge explosion without abandoning caring, patient-centeredness and Hippocratic values. These days we have a website, you can book online, and we have computer tools to achieve consistently excellent clinical care for chronic disease. We are hopeful the future of general practice is bright. Thank you for the honour of continued partnerships for good health and health care.

14.01.2022 One of the significant advantages to seeing an Exercise Physio is their ability to help develop your body's strength and function. This includes fall prevention. Whether it be a part of recovery or as prevention, fall management is essential in older age. Our Excercise Physio has extensive experience working with patients to prevent and prepare the body for falls. To find out more start a conversation with your GP, they will know the best way to refer you to our Excercise Physio, Peter Mourginos.

14.01.2022 When was the last time you checked yourself? Covid has taken the highlight as it has needed to for most of 2020. It is important to not forget about other important health risks that can affect all of us such as skin cancer. Have a look and get into a good routine checking your own skin. Our practice has GPs that focus on skin checks and excisions, and we bulk bill most excisions. Book an appointment for a skin check at the practice if you are worried about any moles, spots or marks.

14.01.2022 The health of males in Australia lags behind that of females on most measures of mortality and morbidity and males bear a larger share of the overall burden of disease than do females. There are three primary factors contributing to poorer male health outcomes: Biology Sex specific biological differences in utero and early life lead to a higher rate of genetic abnormalities in males than females. Naturally, the specific male anatomy of the testicles and prostate leads to ma...le specific health problems, the latter not until middle age or older. However, biology is at best a marginal contributor to overall health disparities between the sexes. The significant differences in health outcomes that exist between socially diverse groups of males indicate that biological factors are of lesser importance in determining health outcomes for men and boys. Behaviour and social influence These two factors are interconnected. Personal behaviours, including values and attitudes toward health and help seeking, largely result from social influences. These social influences and personal behaviours vary considerably depending on ethnicity, age, education and economic status, resulting in significant health differences between these groups. Institutional responses This includes policies directed at and impacting on health and illness, as well as service provision that focuses on prevention, cure and the management of chronic conditions. WHAT CAN MEN DO? 1. Be active in getting medical help if you don't feel well, have a problem that won't go away or notice unusual symptoms. 2. It's OK to seek help - don't try to do everything on your own or bury problems. Talk to your wife, friends and workmates. 3. Push hard to get the help you need to manage your life, work, family and financial needs. WHAT CAN FAMILIES DO? Ladies, be proactive in helping your men and boys get the help they and you need. Use available hotlines, speak with professionals to get the best course of action and be persistent. Don't leave it too late to seek help. Fear is not a killer.

06.01.2022 What is My Health Record? My Health Record is a secure online summary of key health information such as medical history, medicines, allergies and adverse reactions, immunisations, hospital discharge summaries and reports from tests and scans. For patients, it means their important health information is kept together in one place that is accessible anytime by their authorised healthcare providers, including in a medical emergency.... Who gets a record? Currently, more than one in five Australians have a My Health Record. Later this year, the program will be expanded to an 'opt-out' participation model, whereby every individual with a Medicare or Department of Veterans' Affairs card will get a My Health Record unless they tell us they don't want one. A three month opt-out period will be held from 16 July to 15 October 2018. During this period, those individuals who do not want to have a My Health Record can opt out by: going to www.myhealthrecord.gov.au or calling the Help line on 1800 723 471.

05.01.2022 We truly live in a great place here in Queensland. However, with the sunny days and great weather comes a great risk, skin cancer. With Queenslanders leading the world in rates for some skin cancers it is wise to 'check yourself before you wreck yourself'. Dr Kavitha is very knowledgeable and experience in detecting and treating skin cancers with patients. Skin checks are one of the areas she enjoys most about general practice. A Skin Check is simple, book an appointment an...d tell the doctor what moles you have noticed or a concerned about. The doctor may want to have a look all over in case you missed some potential moles that are of concern. Check out the following link for some useful information on checking for skin cancer, http://www.sunsmart.com.au/skin-ca/checking-for-skin-cancer It is best to seek advice from a GP if you are concerned or unsure about a mole.
