20.01.2022 Hey everybody! We have been a bit quiet on the social media front. We hope everyone has been staying safe and warm. Our ewes are happily baking away with lambs due in the coming months. But for now, here’s a throw back! Toowoomba Show 2017 if I can remember correctly.

11.01.2022 D O R S E T * H O R N The Dorset Horn arrived in Australia in 1895 when eight ewes and two rams were imported into South Australia by John Melrose. By 1930 ther...e were 142 flocks registered in mainland Australia and 2 in Tasmania. Sadly today there are only 16 flocks with a total of 631 registered ewes, putting the Dorset Horn into the Endangered category. They are a magnificent looking sheep especially the rams with those huge spiral horns. Despite their horns they always appear to be a lovely even tempered sheep, as you can see by the young boy handling the ram in the photo. To find out more about the Dorset Horn I asked breeder Rob Grieve from Hillend Dorsets, the oldest Dorset Horn Stud in Australia, why he chose this wonderful old breed. Here are his words: The Dorset Horns were started by my great grandfather on Mum's side of the family in 1931 so I suppose it is a bit of family heritage that we keep breeding them, plus we use the rams ourselves over our commercial ewes to breed sucker lambs that is what the breed is best known for. It is good watching the mothers standing up to the dogs protecting their lambs with their excellent mothering ability, plus the growth rate of the lambs is outstanding. So, if you are looking for a horned breed, this beautiful sheep may be for you. See more
