05.01.2022 A student was riding on a prized jumping horse. She'd been having issues with him lately as he kept bucking her off. She came across an instructor who had just ...moved to the area and figured she'd ask for advice. . As she's riding around the arena with the instructor watching, she comes up to a jump and sure enough, the horse goes into full bronc mode and she comes off. Standing up, she grabs her horse and starts telling the instructor, "I don't know what to do with him anymore! He's useless if he won't jump!" Clearly upset, the instructor listens to her ramble. When she's finished, the instructor replies. . "Why did he buck you off?" The student replies with, "I don't know! He's stubborn and disrespectful!" The instructor, keeping a straight face, says, "If someone who never listens to you wanted to hang out with you, would you want to hang out with them?" Shocked, the student says, "No? Why would I?" . "Clearly, your horse does not want you on his back. You've checked saddle fit, had a vet check, everything you can possibly think of. There's nothing anyone can come up with to explain why he isn't performing to his usual standards. Meaning he doesn't want you riding him. He doesn't enjoy what he's doing as he's being forced to do it. The reason he throws you off is because he's trying to tell you that. He's trying to speak to you, but you're not understanding because you don't know how to speak his language." . The student ponders this for a second. Then says, "Well what do we then?" . "Listen. He's trying to tell you he's not comfortable with a rider. Everytime you fall off, everyone says to just get back on. So you do. He doesn't have a choice. So don't get back on. Not yet anyways. Remember that horse and you are partners. Listen to him, and he'll listen to you. Take some time to bond, have fun together, and enjoy each other's presence. Then worry about riding later. The most important part isn't the ribbons, it's the relationship between you and your horse." . Two months later, the horse and the girl won a blue ribbon at their first show in over three months.
