25.01.2022 Poor vision may lower kids grades according to researchers at QUT. 30% of grade 3 Australian kids sampled had borderline or unsatisfactory vision. These children scored significantly lower on national standardised tests of reading, grammar and punctuation, spelling and numeracy, than their peers. This research highlights the importance of early vision screening in identifying children who may be achieving below their potential. The study was recently published in the International Journal of Educational Research.

20.01.2022 Can someone please stop Labour & the Greens from opposing the rise in the Medicare levy to pay for the NDIS. This is exactly how it should be paid for and its what we and many others have been arguing for all along - we want an insurance style levy on every tax payer (% so those on higher incomes pay more) so that we all take responsibility for supporting those in our community who have a disability. Surely everyone can buy into the idea that they pay a small percentage of their salary as an insurance policy so that, if for example they have a disabling accident or if they have a child born with a disability, then they or their child can live with dignity and achieve to the best of their reduced capabilities.

19.01.2022 Working Memory workshops with visiting UK Dyslexia expert. Book now: https://www.silvereye.com.au/news.php

15.01.2022 One of the worlds leading reading experts, Dr Maryanne Wolf, says Australia must improve teaching for dyslexic kids. She was appalled that states like New South Wales dont even recognise dyslexia as a learning disability. When she told our educators and policy makers: "Let me tell you, dyslexia is real," Professor Wolf was not stating an opinion, but rather a fact supported by years of painstaking research.

15.01.2022 If you missed the chance to hear Dr Maryanne Wolf talk on her recent visit to Australia then listen to this. Dr Wolf took a few minutes out of her schedule for an interview on ABC Radio while in Perth. Fascinating and insightful. If this sparks your interest or if you care about the future of reading, get her latest book which reframes literacy in our modern digital world - http://www.silvereye.com.au/prod6071-Tales-of-Literacy-for-

13.01.2022 Two of our busiest days ever last week with Kari Dunn Buron (Incredible 5 Point Scale author) presenting at workshops in Adelaide & Darwin. Kari used her vast experience teaching autistic kids & adults to explain how social cognition and emotional regulation impact those with an autism spectrum disorder and showed how powerful 5 point scales can be in helping them. The Silvereye display was frantically busy both days and apologies to anyone who couldnt get through the crowds to look at the resources. http://www.silvereye.com.au/author=Kari+Dunn+Buron

12.01.2022 Disability Advocacy NSW (https://da.org.au) provides a vital service to people struggling to get the supports they need. The NSW Government will stop funding them in June 2020 unless enough people tell them that this is wrong. Matthew Snow, (plumber turned PhD), gave us some horrifying stories today about the battles people have to get the NDIS supports they need. Nobody could listen to these stories and think that defunding Disability Advocacy NSW is the right thing to do.

12.01.2022 Dont miss the SPELD Book Fair in Parramatta this Friday. https://www.silvereye.com.au/news.php

11.01.2022 Please support the Australian publishing industry by contacting Senator Mitch Fifield, your local candidates, and/or by signing the petition (see link). It will be hugely damaging for Australia to unilaterally give up its protections for the local industry whilst getting nothing in return from our competitors in the US and UK.

11.01.2022 So pleased to announce that we have just agreed to distribute Boys Town Press titles in Australia. Great books for social-emotional learning, behaviour and relationships.

10.01.2022 Listen to Professor Maryanne Wolf talking on Radio National on the potential impact digital culture will have on reading and our capacity for deep learning. She is talking today in Melbourne about her research into the neurological basis of reading, learning, and dyslexia. Its fascinating, insightful and will surely convince any sceptics that dyslexia exists and that we need to use systematic reading interventions to teach dyslexic kids to read.

08.01.2022 Come and visit the Silvereye exhibition stand and see our great resources on Friday at Generation Next. We will have the speakers books for purchase as well as a fantastic selection of books for parents, educators & other professionals.

08.01.2022 Here is a great chance for parents, teachers, etc. to learn more about how to really help young children to read & write. SPELD always provide helpful information based on evidence of what really works.

07.01.2022 Implementing programs to improve education in regional and rural Australia could improve annual GDP by $53 billion, according to a new report by the Gonski Institute for Education. The rural/city divide in education is holding the country back and fixing it would give a much better return on investment than grand infrastructure projects.

06.01.2022 Can you see our website? Please let us know if you get a blank white page when you go to www.silvereye.com.au. A few people have reported this problem (fine for most people) and weve made some changes this week to try and resolve, but would be great to know if anybody still has problems getting to the website. Thanks!

06.01.2022 Controversy today at the Learning Difference Convention in Melbourne. Our view - having just sat in on Professor John Steins first talk, the research pointing to a visual connection to dyslexia, at least for some people, appears sound. We all want evidence backed therapies but we also need to be open to different theories, especially where they are backed up by solid scientific research.

04.01.2022 If you want to find out more about the visual link to dyslexia, this recent academic article is a good place to start: http://jov.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2213244. Also here is a link to some of John Steins earlier work on the topic: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/dys.186/full

03.01.2022 An in-depth discussion with Janette Purkis and Emma Goodall, authors of The Guide to Good Mental Health on the Autism Spectrum, was broadcast this week on ABC Radio Nationals All In The Mind. It was really illuminating to hear these two eloquent autistic women talk about their experiences and they also offered some helpful ideas for others on the spectrum. Well worth a listen.
