25.01.2022 TextaQueen created the photographic series ‘Eve of Incarnation’ during an artist-in-residence at Police Point Shire Park via Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery in 2016 and we are proud to present ‘Serenader’ from this series in the group exhibition fundraiser ART IS IN OUR NATURE. ‘Eve of Incarnation references the biblical story of Eve cast out of the garden of Eden after eating fruit from the tree of knowledge. In this imagined mythology, an allegory of emigrant experien...ce, Eve is a divine yet earthly entity who has swam across time and tides from the artist’s ancestral lands of Goa, India to find herself on the shores of Boonwurrung country - what is colonially named Point Nepean National Park Victoria, Australia. She drapes her naked self in the ‘fabric’ of the landscape the indigenous and invasive plant species, seaweeds and rocky crags becoming ‘nature couture’. The images reference the artifice of high fashion photography as a resistance to ethnographic projections onto the brown-skinned body in the landscape. The artist’s soft, scarred and otherwise unkempt body wears unsellable ‘garments’ that only exist in the photographic moment, these temporal costumes suitably meditating on transitory contact with others’ ancestral land. Commonly the ‘nature nude’ photographic genre depicts white bodies in images of supposedly passive, feminine fragility, even though the presence of those bodies on that land is most often the result of colonial violence. These works attempt to acknowledge the artist’s own neo-colonial presence as a being whose ancestry belongs elsewhere, yet desires connection to the country she ‘finds herself’ upon. It is science-fiction that the artist exists on these lands a result of the apocalyptic colonisations of the lands of India and Australia.’ textaqueen.com/series/eve-of-incarnation/ @mprg_vic @textaqueen @savewesternport @merricksgeneralwinestore #savewesternport #noaglgas #photography #mythology #eve #serenader #identity #colonialism #stolenland #bunwurrung #mprg #body #pointnepeannationalpark #landscapephotography #policepointpark #meditation #temporal #nude #colonialviolence #history #buycontemporaryart #body

21.01.2022 Thank you @valeriesparksartist This beautiful piece is available for viewing at Merricks General Wine Store. The full exhibition can be viewed on our website via the link in our bio. And whilst on the birds.... I have donated an artist's proof of this work to the ART IS IN OUR NATURE, @silverleaf_artbox fundraiser to protect Westernport - a delicate and complex ecosystem which is under threat from AGL’s proposed gas terminal. See link in bio to see this and many other... works by some great artists. "Great White Egret’ is from the series ‘Little Bird Bird History’. It was photographed at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. This beautiful bird was collected in Chile by zoologist Georg Ritter von Frauenfeld who was on the Austrian ship the SMS Novara. The Novara circumnavigated the globe between 1857-1859, and was significant in building the vast bird collection of the Natural History Museum. Whilst undertaking these photo shoots at the museum I observed the way the practice of collecting over the centuries has the generated a strange traffic in birds. I’m interested in the way collecting processes create concentrations of diverse specimens in foreign locations, whilst concurrently dispersing individual species globally through a series of unnatural migrations. For scientists and historians and for artists such as myself the opportunity to work with these specimens means these artefacts continue to generate new meanings. They have a currency that continues to evolve and change, and as such we can never underestimate the potential value that different species will have in the future. The existence of these collections allows people to reassess and understand the present through contemplating the past." . . . . . #valeriesparks #artisinournature #silverleaf_artbbox #savewesternport #greatwhiteegret #viennanaturalhistorymusem #art #contemporaryart #photography #birds #taxidermy See more

17.01.2022 ‘Multiverse #29’ by Melbourne sculptor Ewen Coates is a beautifully restrained exploration of space, mind states and the notion of multiple universes. Subtle optical movement is created as the space between the discs hums and flickers in connection with its environment. ‘The title ‘Multiverse’ refers to the idea of multiple universes. Whether as a cosmological concept or an abstract set of verses played out in one’s mind, it is my aim to contain this theory in one abstract fo...rm and place it in the realm of ‘Satori’: depicting form as a negative space and splicing it into any environment, like an after image that evokes an emptying of mind. Sculpture in this sense shimmers between the object and the environment, bringing the surrounding landscape to the fore, much the same way ‘dark matter’ is perceived as the unseen fabric of the universe’. Ewen Coates 2020 Coates’s sculpture and other works in the current exhibition ART IS IN OUR NATURE can be viewed via the web link in our bio. 12.01.2022 ART IS IN OUR NATURE is now entering its final week. This exhibition is raising vital funds to help @savewesternport protect Westernport Bay from the imminent threat of AGL’s proposed gas import terminal. We are excited to present this beautiful and poignant work by contemporary artist Brent Harris:... ‘This lithograph evokes a figure’s breath of consciousness, the metaphoric river of its title suggesting the mortal stream of life. The hatted figure might be an avatar for the artist, emerging momentarily out of the flux of a stygian darkness.’ Brent Harris 2020 Thank you @brent_harris_art for supporting the cause. 01.01.2022 ‘Just about everyone loves a magpie. They probably rival the kookaburra as the most revered and best-known Australian bird. I enjoy the company of the local maggies in my backyard and to paint a picture of them seemed the obvious thing to do. Maybe it’s a bird portrait? To paraphrase De Kooning when he was asked why he painted nudes his reply was well why wouldn’t you? I feel the same about the beautiful magpie, why wouldn’t you paint one?’ Philip Davey 2020 Davey’s magpie ...features in the current Save Westernport fundraising exhibition ART IS IN OUR NATURE along with the work of 53 other contemporary artists.
