23.01.2022 I have two kids who have hearing loss, I shared with a new acquaintance. I’m sorry, she said. At first I didn’t think much of her immediate response. I’ve ...become used to people not knowing what to say or putting their foot in their mouth. I give gracebecause I know people don’t mean to be insensitive. I really believe most people are good, kind, and caring. Mostly, they just don’t get it. Later that day I thought more about her statement. It occurred to me that first, she most likely doesn’t understand because there’s a lack of first-hand experience with hearing loss. When I thought it through even further, I felt even more compelled to continue my mission of spreading awareness and increasing understanding about hearing loss. It is the key. I want people to know there’s NO REASON TO BE SORRY! Because: Kids who have hearing loss are whole. Kids who have hearing loss are normal kids. Kids who have hearing loss don’t hear like typical kids but they are still typical. Kids who have hearing loss are happy. Kids who have hearing loss can do anything their hearing peers can do. Kids who have hearing loss have determination. Kids who have hearing loss need accommodations but not a bar set low. Kids who have hearing loss thrive. There’s no need to express sorrow for kids who have hearing loss. Empathy? Is welcomed. Support? Always appreciated. Encouragement? Never underestimate it! I would rather someone ask questions or to express interest in learning more about them. Truth: Kid who have hearing loss do work harder than most. And so do their advocates. But here’s the thing: Most of us would not change a thing! Our kids don’t need to be fixed. They want to be accepted, included, and loved. Thanks for listening VG

05.01.2022 Happy AAC Awareness Month! This is the month where people from around the world raise awareness about alternative and augmentative forms of communication (which... means all the different ways we communicate other than speech, including Key Word Sign and gesture). Communication is a basic human right and we would love to see all kinds of communication accepted and embraced in communities not only here in Australia but across the planet. This year’s theme is ‘Bridging the Silence through Solidarity’. Use the hashtag #AACaware20 so that we can raise our voices together for AAC Awareness! #keywordsign #keywordsignaustralia

03.01.2022 Helpful list. What would you add?

02.01.2022 Sometimes children without expressive language use physical behaviours (e.g. hitting) in an attempt to communicate what they want. Using Key Word Sign with the... child can help reduce these behaviours by giving showing them a more appropriate way of expressing their needs. Find out more about Key Word Sign at www.kwsa.com.au #AACaware20 #keywordsign #keywordsignaustralia #disability #communication #disabilitysupport #communicate #learning #aac
