09.01.2022 A past student was soaking off acrylic nails for a NEW client today. The client was previously going to a Non Standard Salon (NSS) where they use (what we susp...ected was) MMA. NSSs are also known not to use sanitary methods and share tools and equipment between clients. They are generally untrained and dont follow safe working procedures. MMA is an ingredient in some Acrylic Nail systems. In its liquid form it can be quite hazardous for your health. in its powder form it is considered quite safe. The reason it gets used is because it adheres so well AND it is very cheap. They are very hard to soak off and remove safely. The customer usually has them removed by force which causes extreme damage to the natural nail. This damage AND the use of unsanitary tools and methods often cause what is known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. It can start off as a small yellowish to greenish tinge and can be caused by several factors such as: - Lifting that has been left too long without repair - Going too long between appointments - Nail tech not cleaning and disinfecting tools and equipment properly between clients - nail tech not removing all lifting from previous fill when doing a refill. - nail tech applying acrylic over previous greenie - extreme damage to the nail causing cracks and peeling of layers that can trap bacteria under enhancements - all of the above What do you do??? Refer the client to their doctor. Where he/she can correctly test and diagnose the problem. Nail technicians must never diagnose and or attempt to treat a nail infection. It is not in our scope of work. Leave it to the professionals. My student discovered a dark patch under acrylic after she electric filed the top layers of the enhancement and began to soak off the acrylic during the clients first visit to her salon. As the acrylic very slowly began to dissolve the darkness appeared. The student then ceased the service and made the appropriate recommendation to visit the doctors. Threw out all disposable items and any files then washed and disinfected her tools and entire area completely! Doctors have taken a scraping to send away for testing. Customers.... choose your nail technician wisely. Look for training certificates and watch for cleanliness in salon. No sharing of files and tools!!! Very low prices could be an indication the nail technician is using MMA Also return for regular maintenance treatments and never remove nails yourself or glue down lifting enhancements. Nail Technicians.... get educated!!! Set the standards that our customers should learn to expect. Use quality products, always use safe salon practices and follow manufacturers instructions. Educate your customers on how to look after their nails between visits and tell them to return immediately if they notice any problems. I will try and keep you all updated on the progress.
