25.01.2022 Lounge Gallery, Sauerbier House Maps and Makers - Veronica Calarco Maps and Makers is a project that was developed by a small group of artists, writers and aca...demics in Wales. It seemed there were a lot of people working with maps and representations of their area - in academic institutions, the museum, in workshops and studios all relating to maps, as artefacts or as digital research tools. The group thought it would be a good time to try and catch that work and make it visible, tangible. And because the project grew out of discussions with friends and colleagues, it was decided that the form project should be: a convivial, constantly-developing conversation involving walks, talks, gatherings, exhibitions, workshops and discussions. As one of the artists in the project, Veronica Calarco, decided to bring the idea of the project to Sauerbier House, coordinating an exhibition of works from artists in Wales and works by local Port Noarlunga artists. The exhibition will be a constantly growing one as artists bring and send work in. It will be held during the month of January. If you would like to be part of this journey of creativity, take part in the conversation please bring the work in or email [email protected] Image used with permission: Valerie Calarco

16.01.2022 We couldn't resist sharing with you one more historic map of Australia from Griffith Taylor series. It's an unusual juxtaposition of cattle distribution and th...e major mining centres of the period (1920s). It also shows stock routes and the limits of several artesian basins. Find it in Trove here: http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-255201355 Other maps in the series (including the infamous sheep/no sheep map) are at: http://trove.nla.gov.au/map/result

08.01.2022 Leonardo da Vinci made a map of Imola, Italy, in 1502 that's comparable to satellite imagery of the town today. Here's how he did it:

04.01.2022 Maps are an oft-overlooked component of Trove, but you can search more than 600,000 of them. More and more are becoming freely available online. Here's one of o...ur favourites. It shows areas of sheep and wheat production in Australia. Have a close look! It was part of a series of maps edited by eminent geographer Thomas Griffith Taylor (1880-1963) in the 1920s. Others in the series show information such as rainfall, population, vegetation, and cattle and mineral production.
