25.01.2022 Size isnt everything yeah right! From experience I can accurately state that some are too big and others definitely too small. The ideal size of a surgery needs to consider several concepts: Ergonomics of staff Work flow Patient comfort...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Happy New Year to all my friends, colleagues and supporters. Thank you for the words of encouragement as I embark on an exciting chapter in my life. Over the coming months I wish to share some of my challenges and achievements that I encounter in creating a superb new Dental Practice. Firstly I would like to thank Manuel Canestrini (whose renders I will post) and Bill Stoney for all their assistance they have given me over the last few months in consolidating my vision. Now its back to some dentistry.... Simon

24.01.2022 Manuel Canestrinis newest renders for the practice with the funky K-Five Furniture and door signage.

24.01.2022 The perils of plumbing The biggest challenge for potential surgery space is plumbing; plumbing and plumbing. Without good plumbing and waste removal you cannot provide any services. Gravity and gradient are two tenants of waste removal. The space that I am utilising is a new building with fixed waste points and suspension concrete slabs. Unfortunately I cannot core through the slab if you slice one of the cables all hell breaks loose and we will have a leaning tower in So...uth Melbourne. Thus I needed to be creative with design. Most plumbing is internal to walls or behind cabinetry. Effective suction will always enhance a clients experience! High velocity evacuation is the polite description of Suck and spit. Without good suction dentists are dead in the water. You cannot fill someones cavity; provide a painless pull; and clean out cracks without decent draw. The suction pipes have a reduced aperture the further away from the plant room. Essentially we reduce the hose size from an open mouth to pursed lips to force the airflow down the tubes. This increases force and velocity of suction. The plant room is designed to hold two tandem suction motors. If one has a headache then the other one will provide suction. Waste not want not Waste water from the staff and sterilization facilities have to be pumped across the bulkhead to the utility shaft because of the immovable slab. The utility shaft needed to be enclosed in a fire rating wall prior to the building compliance certification. Thus any plumbing and ventilation connections needed to be put in place prior to successful settlement. Building prior to officially owning or renting premises is a big risk but I hope to complete a lot of the messy work prior to other businesses moving into the building. Tale of Two Cisterns Because I am combining two individual premises the toilet waste pipes are adjacent to one another. The orientation could not be altered unless we cored the slab again a big No No! So they remain a fixed immovable in-convenience, unless we utilised this constipation into our design flow to our full advantage. The toilets are perhaps the most important facility everyone who walks through the doors uses them. Nerves have an interesting manifestation. And as a dentist we deal with nerves. The new ones are large 2000 mm x 1600 mm: enough room to preach to a congregation; hold a quorum; host a small dinner party; and contain parent with pram. I wished to provide adequate private child changing facilities in conjunction with peaceful ablutions. I was informed that most people up-date there Facebook whilst ensconced on the throne. The washrooms are slightly shy of the new Wheelchair dimensions. Luckily we have a committed WC toilet on the ground level adjacent to the lift. Please note the sweet accompaniment of music will harmonize and counterpoint any torrid tinkles or boisterous brass blasts!

23.01.2022 Here are some photos in the week leading up to the Practice Open Day, November 30 2013. Thank you to everyone who assisted me in getting all the tasks completed for the Open Day. Cleaning until 3 AM; installing dental equipment the same night and wallpapering on the morning of the opening, before toilets were siliconed in place, was not my idea of fun. The whole experience was like a reality TV show - bring on the Dental Block.

22.01.2022 Hi All, the Fire engineering Company were onsite today. Hopefully plastering will start by weeks end.... Due to the obvious delays in getting the project off the ground, no pun intended, I have secured two days per week at the professional suites of Melbourne Dental Clinic, The University of Melbourne. Tuesday and Thursdays 9 AM to 5 PM. They are located 723 Swanston Street, Carlton (Corner Grattan and Swanston Street). Bookings can be made on 9035 8042 or online at www.udmc....com.au. Also a scintillating Storm game tonight. Hard fought draw with Manley in overtime! Thank goodness the weather held out.

21.01.2022 Thank you for those creepy stalkers who have already offered to be a friend, as a Facebook Novice I will try to keep up to speed I wonder if Oscar Wilde or would provide a Noel Coward an acerbic quip about the exposures of Facebook. Maybe I will have to Google our modern doyenne Stephen Fry. He always has some illuminating comments. Now to explain what the concept is This page is about the next exciting chapter in my career: Surgery Mark II. From inception to design, fit ...out and decoration I hope that you find this insightful about the creation process. Many people think me a veteran as I began my first at the tender age of 26. So many laughter lines ago So much has changed in fifteen years regarding health care settings and standards that I feel that I am on an exponential learning curve. It is exhilarating and challenging to combine so many elements to construct a functional classic dental work space. I have many talented people assisting me on this journey but foremost I wish to thank my parents for their committed belief in my success. Choosing a potential surgery space Port Phillip Planning issues includes adequate parking and wheelchair access. So many buildings in inner Melbourne Councils are deemed inappropriate for potential surgeries. You cannot have front steps; you certainly cannot have internal stairs without a lift. In the old days most professionals were located on first floors above shop fronts as they did not require huge street access. This is no longer the case. The lack of potential health care suitable sites poses a big problem with regards to the expansion of inner urban apartment living and its resultant population boom. Good services could be lacking. Once you have found a suitable space you need to consider these policies. They make recommendations for surgery layout and treatment zones; ergonomics of treatment; sterilization; waste management and disposal; management of hazardous chemicals; body protection zones; and disabled access. National Health and Medical Research Council Standards Australia/New Zealand Standards o Code AS/NZS4187:2007 o Code AS/NZ4851:2001 o Code AS/NZS1428.1 2009 o Code AS/NZS3003:2011 ADA Infection Control Guidelines (2009) APA and RACGP Guidelines for infection EPA Waste Management Radiographic Codes These along with the chosen space dimensions and structure really impact design and layout. What areas does a good health care setting require? Spacious waiting zone for patient comfort Staff area for privacy Office and work stations for non-surgical tasks Reception Toilets! Plant room Large and roomy sterilization zone Reasonable sized surgeries Good flow between the zones Wish list: Shower By the time you add up the space requirements for these zones you are heading to a minimum 150 SQM. It was pure luck I literally stumbled across the proposed site. After some negotiation and the sale of my apartment I was ready to undertake the new project.

21.01.2022 It was busy and dusty all last week with The lads from E&M Cabinetry installing the second wave of cabinetry. This included the spotted gum bench tops, silastone tops in the surgeries and office cabinetry. Josh from Plumbmaster was then able to fit off the basins, sinks and tap ware. Bill from Alldent has been installing the dental chair guts and wiring. It looks freaky in this condition! Not long now....

21.01.2022 This week has been more technical (and dusty!) with emphasis on installation of plant equipment and readying the cabinetry for bench measurements. Thanks to Plumbmaster, All Dent and E&M Cabinets.

20.01.2022 View out to Light Rail.

20.01.2022 Again Thanks to Manuel

19.01.2022 Hi All, slow but steady movement on the surgery front. There is a huge pile of cabinetry sitting in the waiting zone ready for installation. Some tight cooperation between cabinet crew, dental installer, plumber and electrician should see a huge leap forwards. Then the poor painter has to touch up any inadvertent marks on the walls. Fingers crossed big changes around the corner.

19.01.2022 Hellos everyone, I have been quiet on the notification front until momentous occurrences. Today is the first big one... Settlement on the property for the new practice was confirmed at 2.28 PM today. Now I will cycle over to South Melbourne and collect the keys to my new professional life. Hopefully I will be operational in early May. Lots to do and organise until then. Thanks for all your support and kind words. Hope everyone else is having a great day! I am elated and relieved. Simon

19.01.2022 Hi all, I realize I am like the prodigal son returning to the fold. Until now there has only been dust and carnage with the build and redo of certain systems. Now for some pics to show what everyone has been up to at the site. A big thank you to Bill Stoney (Dental); Matt Egan (Cabinetry); Marc Fulker (Electrician); Nick Leening (Plumber); Danny Todovic (Painter); Wayne at Alternative Surfaces for the cool render; and Graham Chivers (Tiler).... I now will post more updates as changes are a occurring! Cheers Simon

15.01.2022 North of South Northumberland is close to South Melbourne Market. A brisk walk past Motel Ravers, dumpsters and rather poor graffiti will take you to the new building. Melbournians love lane ways and I always think those hidden clubs and bars down some dark dingy alley are the best. So why not a dentist! The space is an industrial box. Concrete suspension slabs make the floor, ceiling and walls, floor to ceiling glass on the west and 2/3 glass on the east. It gets abundant na...tural light and there are windows that actually open. These will provide a beautiful natural cooling effect as they create a cross breeze. Surgery Design Certain unique factors guided the design process: I wanted to take advantage of the windows and views Rooms needed to be spacious for work flow and comfort You need non-surgical spaces for business function The plant equipment is your lifes blood its needs its own space I have to think about the future and potential expansion I needed to be wary of plumbing, ventilation limitations and the suspension cables in the slab

14.01.2022 Works undertaken in the last week or so, at 10 Northumberland.

14.01.2022 This week has been a dusty exercise with the cabinet makers focusing on the two surgeries, sterilization and kitchen. The Valchromat doors look great - a nice industrial touch. Thanks Manuel Canestrini for the recommendation of material, and E&M Cabinetry for the work thus far. Now its plant equipment, pumps and templates at the stone mason.

12.01.2022 Hi All, another week of plumbing, electrics and coordination for the new premises. I am currently compiling SOP information, collating consumable lists and vetting CVs from team applicants. We are about two weeks from installing cabinetry carcasses, so a lot of small jobs and tidying up to complete. More images of progress have been uploaded. Vinyl is down - thanks to Nick from Nationwide Flooring. Another big thanks to Nick and Josh from Plumbmaster. They built the intricat...e copper pipes that need to take the 95 degree water from the thermal-disinfector and mix it with the sink/autoclave/AC waste. The Body Protection wiring was competently completed by the boys at Green Star (Adrian loves his heavy metal music at 6.30 AM). Although I did have overlook away from the beige cleaning power point. Until next time. Thank you for everyones patience. S PS Power is on - Thank You Marc from Greenstar for all your efforts! See more

12.01.2022 There were several aspects that I had to consider when choosing a site for a new practice: 1. Room for expansion 2. Council zoning and planning 3. Surrounding amenities, parking availibility, public transport, proximity to home and the quality of coffee:) 4. Wheelchair access... 5. Plumbing, plumbing and more plumbing 6. Restraint of trade I had been looking around the South Melbourne area and literally stumbled across a new commercial site close by the Market. The beautiful aspect of this site is that it is elevated with city and bay views, and has windows that open to provide a ecological approach for heating and cooling. These are images of the unaltered space and views...

07.01.2022 Well for those of you who know my Mother, you know she has a great sense of humour and is a dab hand at sewing and crafts. Here are some ideas for the surgery.

07.01.2022 Final Layout of potential surgery Thanks to Manuel Canastrini for his hard work

07.01.2022 Works over the last few weeks

06.01.2022 HI All, just to keep everyone in the loop, due to unexpected and uncontrollable delays for the new practice, I am working Fridays through May and maybe early June, at Central Park Periodontal Practice. They are located at 401 Wattletree Road, Malvern. It is on the corner of Burke and Wattletree Road (end of Tram 5). Hours are 9-4 starting tomorrow. I can provide preventive and examination appointments for clients at these premises. Also extractions... Thank you to Julie and A...dam for letting me help people out at their practice. It says a lot when a Specialist offers you there facilities. Unfortunately I finished at SYDG as they are renovating the surgery. Please call me directly if you require preventive care 0412095480 Simon See more

04.01.2022 Pretty messy and industrial

04.01.2022 This is what the new surgery currently looks like, my sincerest apologies to everyone for putting you out with the delays Simon

03.01.2022 Open and waiting

03.01.2022 Some significant mile stones have occurred this week. The internals of the dental chairs are in place - they look rather gruesome and macabre - something out of horror science fiction film. The floor tiles are down. This was a quick and remarkable transformation. I am so pleased that Manuel Canestrini put me onto the Interfar range. Most appliances are installed; water and electrics are being finalized; so I can now commence a huge amount of cleaning. All able hands greatly appreciated. Also the picture rails are up (thanks to Julian). Everyone knows why they are put there! Thanks again for everyones support. Not long now...
