25.01.2022 Our weekly check-in walk! Thanks Lyndal and Tas

25.01.2022 FLOWER ESSENCES Ever heard of Rescue Remedy? Rescue Remedy is a combination of Bach Flowers that have been used since the 1930s, when Dr. Bach discovered their effects. These remedies are a simple and natural method of healing through the use of certain wild flowers. The remedies treat personality / mental states rather than physical conditions, and work particularly well on older people and children. The great thing about them is that they dont interfere with an...y medications and are very safe to use! If you have an anxious child, or a child who is distressed, its worth trying some flower essences. Due to the energy of the flower remedies, you need to keep them away from electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers. You can buy Rescue Remedy from health food shops and chemists, and in clinic, I can make up personalised Australian Bush Flower remedies, or Bach flower remedies. #naturopathy #floweressences #anxiety

24.01.2022 DEPRESSION AND EXERCISE Exercise is powerful tool for reducing symptoms of depression and its drug-free! A study conducted by the Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health reported that exercise prevents the breakdown of a specific neurotransmitter in the brain that protects against depression. Additionally, physical activity reduces the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in your body. The study also cited evidence which displays that exercise induces the gro...wth of nerve cells, as well as the release of proteins and peptides, which all contribute to lowered risk of depression. exercise = symptoms of depression If you would like to discuss your physical or mental health further, I would love to see you in clinic!

23.01.2022 NATURAL ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS Some food for thought during flu season In some instances, antibiotics are necessary and can be lifesaving, so they play a very crucial role in the world of health, however, the over-prescription of antibiotics over the past few decades has led to weakened immune systems across the population. 90% of your immune system is made up of your gut bacteria these bacteria are part of your bodys Innate Immune Response (the front line of defence... against pathogens entering the body). The problem with antibiotics, is that although they kill the bad bacteria in our body, they kill the good bacteria too! So, what can you do to protect your good gut bacteria? Instead of taking antibiotics when you start to feel sick, you could take herbs like andrographis and echinacea a great product available in pharmacies is ArmaForce, which has both of these herbs in it! Additionally, you could take medicinal mushrooms (such as shitake) to boost your immunity, use a netty pot to clear your sinuses, or use essential oils (including eucalyptus, peppermint and frankincense) and a vaporiser to clear your lungs. As well as this, its always helpful to get lots of rest and have light meals (like soups and herbal teas) while youre unwell. If youve tried these methods and your symptoms persist, please consult a GP. If youd like to know more about natural alternatives, or would like to discuss your own health, I would love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #naturalalternatives #naturalmedicine

15.01.2022 5 TYPES OF ANXIETY It has been a difficult year for everyone 2020 has left people with a sense of uncertainty, worry and at some stages panic! I have been able to help manage anxiety for many people in clinic (particularly types 1,2 and 3), and often some clients don’t understand that their symptoms are directly related to anxiety. If you are experiencing any of these forms of Anxiety, or if you aren’t sure of your level of anxiety, book an appointment online at http://www....simonedavisnaturopath.com.au or contact me 1. Panic Disorder A person has panic attacks, which are intense, overwhelming and often uncontrollable feelings of anxiety combined with a range of physical symptoms. Someone having a panic attack may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness and excessive perspiration. Sometimes, people experiencing a panic attack think they are having a heart attack or are about to die. If a person has recurrent panic attacks or persistently fears having one for more than a month, they're said to have panic disorder. 2. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) A person feels anxious on most days, worrying about lots of different things, for a period of six months or more. 3. Social Anxiety A person has an intense fear of being criticised, embarrassed or humiliated, even in everyday situations, such as speaking publicly, eating in public, being assertive at work or making small talk. 4. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) PTSD is a mental health condition that may occur after a traumatic event, or after multiple traumatic events. PTSD can happen after there’s been actual or threatened serious injury, death or sexual violence to ourselves or others. PTSD can also occur after repeated and extreme exposure to the details of traumatic events. For example, emergency workers may be exposed to repeated trauma at work. 5. Phobias A person feels very fearful about a particular object or situation and may go to great lengths to avoid it, for example, having an injection or travelling on a plane. There are many different types of phobias. Note: Naturopathy can offer a great level of support, however extra psychological support or counselling may be required.

13.01.2022 SPICED CHICKEN, SPINACH & SWEET POTATO STEW Get your fix of vitamins, antioxidants and deliciousness in one bowl! Sweet potatoes have a high concentration of carotenes, which provide the body with Vitamin A Remember: the darker the potato, the higher the carotene content. As well as this, they are a great source of Vitamin C, B6 and B2, manganese, copper, biotin, pantothenic acid, and dietary fibre. This vegetable is a powerful antioxidant with antidiabetic benefits too!... You can find the recipe for the stew here: https://simonedavisnaturopath.com.au//spiced-chicken-spin/ If you would like to discuss your diet further, I would love to see you in clinic! *Please note that individuals with oxalate-containing kidney stones should avoid overconsumption of sweet potatoes. #naturopathy #colouryourdiet #sweetpotato

13.01.2022 MAKHLOUTA (PULSES SOUP) Lets talk about chickpeas Theyre a great source of fibre, meaning they lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar (which makes them beneficial for diabetics). Chickpeas are also very low in fat, and have lots of protein, magnesium, folic acid and molybdenum (a trace mineral that detoxifies sulphites in your body).... Whod have thought that so much goodness could be inside such a small bean? Makhlouta is a hearty Lebanese dish thatll warm you up in Winter, and is full of chickpeas and other delicious pulses. You can find the recipe here: https://simonedavisnaturopath.com.au//detox-recipe-makhlo/ Let me know what you think! If you would like to discuss your diet further, Id love to see you in clinic.

12.01.2022 STEWED FRUITS WITH CINNAMON Whats so great about cinnamon? Cinnamon actually has a long history of being used medicinally in both Eastern and Western cultures. It is known to be a sedative for smooth muscles, circulatory stimulant, carminative (relieves flatulence), digestant, anticonvulsant (reduces severity of epileptic fits or other convulsions), diaphoretic (promotes perspiration), diuretic (promotes passing of urine), antibiotic and antiulcerative. A study has suggested... that cinnamon also has benefits for diabetics. Stewed fruits are a quick and easy snack that add a bit of sweetness to your day. Heres how I make my own: 1. Cut, peel and core 5 apples (apples that are getting old and wrinkly are perfect) 2. Put them in a saucepan with water that just covers the fruit 3. Add a cinnamon stick or cinnamon powder 4. Put a lid on and simmer on low until the water evaporates You could also use pears or rhubarb for something a bit different! If you would like to discuss your diet further, I would love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #colouryourdiet #cinnamon

12.01.2022 BEETROOT, DILL & COCONUT SOUP WITH CRISP GINGER LENTILS Why should you be eating ginger? Ginger soothes the intestines, is a great antioxidant, and reduces inflammation. As well as this, ginger has been found effective in relieving pregnancy-related nausea, arthritis, and general motion sickness I never get on a plane without it! ... A tip for Winter: If you feel a cold coming on, ginger tea will warm you up on the inside and promote perspiration. This recipe is from the Australian Womens Weekly - I wanted to share it because soups are fantastic for Winter! Its a meal that can stretch across a few days and soups are always a great way to take the chill off! Enjoy! If you would like to discuss your diet further, Id love to see you in clinic.

11.01.2022 5 THINGS THAT CAN HEIGHTEN ANXIETY ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL / DRUGS Many prescription and over-the-counter medications can heighten anxiety. It is always important to check the side effects of any long term medication you are taking. A great website for this is www.drugs.com BAD SLEEP You know you don’t feel great after a bad night’s sleep, but if this is an ongoing problem, anxiety is sure to set in. Make a bedtime routine to help you drift off to sleep more easily, and s...tay asleep for longer. This might involve a warm shower or bath before bed, herbal tea such as chamomile, and not looking at electronic devices for 1 hour before bed RELATIONSHIP STRUGGLES If you are in a situation that isn’t working for you, or there are relationship struggles with a partner, family, work colleague or friend, anxiety may be heightened. It is important to be able to talk to someone about how you feel. Resolution will make you feel so much better and may be more effective with counselling sessions, speaking with someone you trust or journaling. Mindfulness practise, breathing techniques and getting back to nature can also be extremely beneficial during these times ALCOHOL Alcohol changes the level of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, like serotonin, which helps to keep us relaxed and happy. Often people will feel more anxious after the alcohol wears off (like the next day), and for some, this can become a vicious cycle! POOR DIET CHOICES When you are anxious, you are depleting the vitamins and minerals you need to help you feel calmer and less stressed. Poor diet choices will further exacerbate this! Remember meal planning is a great way to avoid poor diet choices #naturopathy #anxiety

11.01.2022 STRESS AND YOUR UNBORN BABY When we are under stress, our body release a hormone called cortisol; this hormone affects the regulation of your metabolism and your immune system The placenta has enzymes that deactivate maternal cortisol, acting as a buffer to protect the baby from stress, however, if the mothers stress levels are too high (as measured by cortisol) the foetus can undergo epigenetic shift (changing the way its genes work) and other pregnancy issues can be trig...gered. Ways to lower cortisol include: Eating a good diet Sleeping well Exercising And laughing! If you would like help managing your stress during pregnancy, Id love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #stress #pregnancy

08.01.2022 CAULIFLOWER & LENTIL CASSEROLE A perfect recipe for Winter with hidden benefits too! Lentils are a great source of protein, folic acid, trace minerals and dietary fibre, which helps to lower cholesterol. As well as this, they stop our blood sugar from soaring after we eat, so they assist in handling blood sugar disorders. Researchers (in a validated food frequency study) also reported that eating lentils (or beans) at least twice a week was correlated with a 24% reduced risk... of breast cancer! You can find the recipe here https://simonedavisnaturopath.com.au//cauliflower-lentil-/ Happy cooking! *Please note that individuals with oxalate-containing kidney stones should be wary of overconsuming lentils. If you would like further help with managing cholesterol or blood sugar levels, I would love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #colouryourdiet #lentils

07.01.2022 DEPRESSION AND DIET Did you know that the food you eat is linked to your mental health? Growing evidence* suggests a complex relationship between diet and depression: An unhealthy diet has been correlated with depression, while a healthy diet is associated with good physical and mental health. It is unclear whether your diet causes depression, or vice versa, but these two factors nevertheless influence each other, so taking care of your body through what you eat should be a p...riority for everyone! Long-term depression may be accompanied by the development of unhealthy dietary habits, which could continue to lengthen depressive episodes what a vicious cycle. Having a balanced diet with a good source of fish oil, magnesium and B vitamins is a great way to ensure you are nourishing both your body and mind. In a nutshell: Eating well = Happiness If you would like to discuss your mental health or diet further, I would love to see you in clinic! *If you are interested in finding out more about studies which investigate diet and depression, please contact me!

06.01.2022 WHY ARE YOU SO DEPLETED AS A MUM? Did you know the average age of a first-time mum in Australia is 30.9 years? At this age, you are possibly already in a pre-depleted state, after going hard with work and social life for at least 10 years! You also lose about 700 hours of sleep in the first year of your baby being born and you can never get that back! Unfortunately, there are false ideas and misconceptions around motherhood; There is a big build-up to the birth, but birth ...is not the finish line - its the starting line Think about how important you are as a mum - If youre not feeling your best, how does that impact on your relationships and parenting? If youre a new mum who needs support, come and see me in clinic to develop a post-natal recovery plan, and discuss post-partum practices that are flexible and doable. Some testing may be required to check your macro and micronutrient levels along with hormone levels, because if the biology isnt correct, we wont see the best improvements! You will feel supported, in control and less crappy and snappy! #naturopathy #newmums

06.01.2022 BEING PROACTIVE How can you boost your immunity during Winter? Its always a good idea to proactively support your immune system, especially during the Winter flu season, and ESPECIALLY during a pandemic! Upping your vitamin C and zinc intake can enhance your defence against sickness, and taking a good quality probiotic balances the good bacteria in your gut to its natural level, so that your immune system is in top shape for fighting off any pathogens!... Some researched probiotic strains for immune health include Lactobacillus Rhamnosus LGG and Lactobacillus Plantarum HEAL 9. Ask your local pharmacy or health food shop if they stock these strains, or alternatively, come and visit me in clinic for top-quality, practitioner-brand products. If youd like to learn more about how you can boost your immunity, Id love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #proactive #immunity

05.01.2022 Back to nature for some grounding, mental health and physical satisfaction

05.01.2022 WHY DETOX? A toxin refers to any substance that can interfere with the function of our cells, as well as our short- and long-term health. Are you often tired and lethargic? Do you get recurrent headaches?... Do you regularly suffer from bloating, diarrhoea, constipation or other digestive disturbances? Are you regularly suffering from muscle aches and pains? Do you suffer from anxiety, depression and/or mood swings? Do you have allergies or sensitivities? Does poor short-term memory and concentration affect your ability to function at work? Exposure to toxicity is an unavoidable part of modern life. Often our symptoms arise not from high-level exposure to one toxin, but from the additive effect of low-level exposure to a broad range of dietary and environmental toxins. Doing a dietary detox removes toxins from the body, meaning you have a better ability to produce energy. An anti-inflammatory diet eliminates bloating, as well as aches, pains and headaches. The diminished toxic burden on your body also means youll sleep better and be more alert. Contact me to find out more about detoxing, or to join my detox running from 31st August 13th September! https://simonedavisnaturopath.com.au//designed-doable-det/

05.01.2022 Mindfulness and meditation are essential for health and wellbeing at every stage of life! Please sign up to Catherines newsletter for support and guidance with this. She is an expert in Post traumatic stress work, but is equally as skilled in general day to day practice that fits into your life!... Highly recommended https://yogafromtheinside.com.au/contact/join/

04.01.2022 5 SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY Whilst there are different types of anxiety - as mentioned in the last post - as individuals we often have different symptoms that relate to anxiety. The top 5 symptoms I see in clinic include:... 1. Behavioural irritability and restlessness 2. Cognitive lack of concentration, racing thoughts and worry about the future 3. Digestive bloating, indigestion, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea 4. Whole Body sweating, palpitations, trembling 5. Also common insomnia disturbed sleep wired, or sleepy during the day I have been able to help manage anxiety for many people in clinic, and often some clients don’t know that their symptoms are directly related to anxiety. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or if you aren’t sure of your level of anxiety, book an appointment online or contact me directly. #naturopathy #anxiety

03.01.2022 GENETICS AND ALCOHOL: A CLOSER LOOK AT DRY JULY I thought this was a great opportunity to bring Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH) genes and Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH) genes to your attention These genes encode enzymes that are involved in alcohol metabolism, meaning they influence the way your body breaks down alcohol, and your risk of alcoholism. Some variants, like the ADH1B and ADH1C genes, result in more rapid conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde and have a protective effe...ct on the risk of alcoholism. On the other hand, the ALDH2 gene essentially inactivates the enzyme, resulting in acetaldehyde accumulation (difficulty eliminating alcohol from the body). Therefore, we might look at Dry July in another light - Do you find it difficult to drink alcohol as it affects you quickly? Do you drink like a fish and seem to recover really quickly the next day? Looking at these genes can give you a greater insight into your susceptibility for drinking too much and/or reacting more than other people. Interestingly, different nationalities have a higher percentage of certain genes than others, which can trigger highly sensitive reactions, like flushing, nausea and fast heart rates. This information was sourced from MTHFR Support. If youre working to reduce your alcohol cravings, a 2-Week Doable Detox would be perfect for you! If youre interested, Id love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #dryjuly

03.01.2022 PREGNANCY IS A CONTROLLED STATE OF INFLAMMATION Just as we can suffer with leaky or hyper-permeable gut, a pregnant woman can have leaky or increased permeability of her placenta. This is the hallmark of most disorders of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome and premature labour. There are many different types of inflammation that generally occur when there is rebuilding or repairing going on, or when there are too many harmful bi products being produced in the ...body. Inflammation like this can cause tiny microtears through the lining of the placenta. If youd like support during your pregnancy, come to see me in clinic and we can discuss how we can reduce inflammation for you #naturopathy #pregnancy

03.01.2022 THE PLACENTA: THE HORMONE FACTORY The placenta serves 2 masters the mother and the foetus, and makes over 200 hormones! In the third trimester of pregnancy, oestrogen levels multiply by 30, progesterone levels by 10, and cortisol (stress hormone) levels by 3. In the days leading up to birth, oestrogen increases up to 1000x! The placenta provides an unborn baby with oxygen and nutrients, and removes any waste in the babys blood. Hence, its important to look after your plac...enta! This involves avoiding a high blood pressure, refraining from substance use, and having regular check-ups. If you would like to know more about leading a healthy pregnancy, Id love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #pregnancy #placenta

02.01.2022 BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS Did you know that mothers who breastfeed... Have lower rates of ovarian, breast and endometrial cancer? May have higher bone density and lower rates of osteoporosis later in life?... Breastfeeding just one baby for at least 6 months can lower your risk of heart disease, as well as diabetes and high blood pressure! If youd like to know more about your postnatal health, come and visit me in clinic! #naturopathy #breastfeeding

02.01.2022 FOOD INTOLERANCES Could you be suffering from a food intolerance? Tell-tale signs are recurrent throat infections and colds. You might also experience stomach pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, lethargy or headaches. You can easily find out if you suffer from a food intolerance by being tested with the Food Detective (I offer this test in clinic). Creating a food diary (including what you eat and what symptoms you have) may help to pinpoint where the problem lies. As well as thi...s, taking probiotics and prebiotics can be beneficial; probiotics work to keep your gut healthy, while prebiotics increase the development of good bacteria in the body. A great source of information about food intolerances is the Food Detective website! If you would like to be tested or discuss a diet change, I would love to see you in clinic! #naturopathy #foodintolerance #fooddetective

02.01.2022 A reminder of how important diet is to support our mental health

02.01.2022 This was lots of fun!

01.01.2022 TURMERIC TEA (GOLDEN MILK) Want to spice up your cuppa? Turmeric tea is the way to go! Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and is used to relieve pain as well as numerous other conditions (such as flatulence, jaundice, menstrual issues, bloody urine, haemorrhages, toothaches, bruises, chest pain and colic). Turmeric has also been found to help with rheumatoid arthritis pain, and has similar anti-inflammatory effects to drugs like hydrocortisone, phenylbutazone and ibuprofen (withou...t the added toxicity!). Turmeric is an antioxidant which encourages liver detoxification of cancer-causing compounds, and can also assist in preventing heart diseases and degenerative neurological diseases. You can find the link for the recipe here! https://simonedavisnaturopath.com.au//5-minute-turmeric-t/ If youd like to discuss how you can implement a proactively-beneficial diet into your life, Id love you see you in clinic! #naturopathy #colouryourdiet #turmeric

01.01.2022 SUPPORT BREASTFEEDING FOR A HEALTHIER PLANET #WBW2020 This years theme, Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet, was chosen to focus on the impact of infant feeding on the environment and the imperative to protect, promote and support breastfeeding for the health of the planet and its people.... Breastmilk is a natural, renewable food that is produced and delivered to the consumer without pollution, packaging or waste. When we protect and support mothers and breastfeeding, we are also reducing the impact on our air, water and land, protecting our young ones and future generations. This years theme is particularly relevant given the recent catastrophic summer bushfires, hailstorms, and floods, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable during emergencies and climate-related disasters due to their particular food requirements. ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association) has seen first-hand that breastfeeding provides food security. The Association is now urging Australian decision-makers to develop policies and guidelines for Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E). World Breastfeeding Week is also a chance to celebrate the importance of breastfeeding, and the work ABA does in the community to support families.

01.01.2022 5 TIPS FOR EXHAUSTED MUMS Five easy steps to de-stress and re-energise! 1. Meal Planning Every weekend, take 10 minutes to plan your meals for the next 7 days thats one less thing you have to think about during the frenzy of the week.... 2. Rest Time Mums are superheroes, but they cant do everything! While the baby is resting, take the opportunity to rest too. 3. Take a Good-Quality Multivitamin When youre breastfeeding and under a lot of stress, your body loses nutrients more quickly, so you need extra supplementation to keep up your energy and overall body health. Taking a multivitamin is a super simple way to ensure that youre giving your body what it needs - I recommend Tresos Natal! 4. Get a Blood Test Your iron levels affect your energy, and low iron can affect your thyroid. A TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test may show you if you have an underactive or overactive thyroid (think of your thyroid as the conductor of hormones). An underactive thyroid can make you feel lethargic, constipated, foggy in the brain, and generally pretty rubbish; it can also contribute to weight gain. In contrast, an overactive thyroid leads to weight loss, anxiousness and heart palpitations. 5. Stay Hydrated Coffee and tea are diuretics, meaning they make you dehydrated. Its crucial to stay hydrated when youre a busy mum, and its easy to forget to drink during the day when youre preoccupied with other things. Having 8 glasses of water (herbal teas, soup and smoothies can also count) per day should keep your body happy. If you would like further guidance, Id love to see you in clinic. Stay tuned for my upcoming webinar more details to follow!
