25.01.2022 As we know, small business is doing it hard at the moment. Many have had their customer base evaporate almost overnight. The best thing we can do to support them is buy local so they can continue to employ the hundreds of mostly young casual workers relying on them to survive. #pizzarazzi #buylocal #glenorchycity
25.01.2022 My morning started today by pulling a german shepherd off a bull dog while its distraught elderly owner looked on. Both owners were very traumatised and it’s a timely reminder to keep your dogs restrained when walking around our streets.
25.01.2022 Congratulations to the 127 people who became Australian citizens in Glenorchy today. The largest ceremony in the Country apparently, and a reminder of how multicultural our community has become.
25.01.2022 I’m happy to confirm that I’ve nominated for Deputy Mayor. I wish my fellow nominees the very best and I commit to supporting them in the role should I not be successful. At the end of the day, none of this is about us. It’s about what we can do as leaders to improve the lives of people in our community and ensure our City has a bright future. I pledge to continue working to that end regardless of the result from Tuesday nights vote.
24.01.2022 Congratulations to Angela Ryan on being elected to the Glenorchy City Council as an alderman. I look forward to working with you.
21.01.2022 I’ve submitted 2 Questions on Notice for the Council Meeting on the January 28th. The first relates to bushfire risk mitigation and the second is about the possibility of installing a recycling wall in the Glenorchy CBD, similar to the recycling unit in the Hobart.
21.01.2022 The commitment by the Tasmanian Government to fund an employment hub in Glenorchy is fantastic news for our city and great timing given the huge pipeline of construction and development planned for the next few years. The details: - Funding of $1.3 million for two years until 30 June 2022 to: Employ a Glenorchy Workforce Development Coordinator; Establish a Glenorchy Employment Hub;... Establish a training fund to support the work of the above; and Develop and implement an employment transport program to trial innovative solutions to address transport barriers to employment. With a stubbornly high unemployment rate in the the City, particularly amongst young people, this will hopefully be the circuit breaker we need to get more people into a job. Onwards and upwards!
16.01.2022 I was invited to represent Glenorchy City Council at a commemoration of the Christchurch Massacre today however, like other events, it’s been cancelled. Here’s what I wanted to say: The Christchurch Massacre was one of those appalling and tragic events that define a time and place in our lives. I’ll always remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard the news last year, just as I remember where I was and what I was doing when news arrived of our own tragic mas...sacre in Port Arthur 24 years ago. This type of hate and intolerance has no place in our society and neither do weapons that can allow a single hate filled individual to destroy so many lives. Australia and New Zealand are countries built on the same core values - values that protect people’s freedoms, key among these are freedom of worship and association. These freedoms are absolutely central to our way of life and we will never allow hate, intolerance and racism to destroy them. On behalf of Glenorchy City I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the 51 men, women and children killed on March 15th last year as well as those who were injured. We want to reassure all Muslims living in our community that you are welcome, that you are valued members of our community and that we’ll always protect your right to worship and associate in freedom and safety. 15.01.2022 Today Glenorchy City Council aldermen made what will likely be the most significant decision in our elected term: the decision to sell the DEC and Wilkinsons Point to the State Government. This is a wonderful opportunity for our city and our state. I hope in coming years to see this area realise its potential as a sporting and entertainment precinct that provides vitally needed jobs for our young people and injects dollars into our local economy. The future is looking good. https://www.wilkinsonspoint.com.au/
15.01.2022 "Un" social media strikes again. Public life is definitely not for anyone sensitive to criticism or public abuse. You need to very quickly get used to a section of the community disliking you for whatever decision you make. It's simply impossible to please everyone, although we try. Social media sometimes seems to bring out the worst in us - it has weaponised peoples ability to defame and slander without any accountability. Anecdotally, I would say women cop it worse than men.... Although bullying and harassment are terrible in any form, I doubt we'll ever be able to fully control what people say online. The only way to deal with this issue will be for those in public life to either distance themselves from voters and use social media as a one-way channel of communication (as nearly all do) ignoring any comments or continue engaging and simply learn to compartmentalise the inevitable abuse that will be received by remembering that these people do not know you personally and are reacting to a position you hold. 14.01.2022 By the time I turn 80 there will be over a million people living with dementia in Australia. It’s not a normal part of ageing, as many think, but a chronic disease that can affect people of all ages. It was a pleasure to join Professor James Vickers (Wicking Centre) ABC journalist Peter Gee and a wonderful group of volunteers at the opening of the first dementia cafe in Southern Tasmania. The Golden Wattle Cafe is based at the Golden Years Club, Main Rd Glenorchy. More details available at Goldenwattlecafe.com
13.01.2022 My latest op ed in today’s Mercury. As always, these are my personal views. I don’t speak for GCC.

07.01.2022 A strange coincidence given my experience yesterday. Stay clear of this dog if you see it.
04.01.2022 In a time of crisis such as the one we are currently going through, it’s important to avoid the media frenzy and get your information from trusted sources. Some useful, trusted and academically reliable sources on the COVID-19 pandemic are listed below: Department of Health (Tasmania) https://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au//infectious_diseas/coronavirus... The Department of Health (Federal) https://www.health.gov.au//novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-hea Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/resources/COVID-19/ World Health Organisation https://www.who.int/westernpacific/emergencies/covid-19 I also recommend this Sam Harriss podcast, interviewing Amesh Adalja from the Center for Disease control, which will destroy any misconceptions this is just another flu. https://samharris.org/podcasts/191-early-thoughts-pandemic/ It’s a fine line between invoking panic and getting people proactively prepared for a pandemic. In my view we are underestimating the risk to our population in Tasmania given our older median age and poorer general health. Flattening the epidemic curve will be critical to ensure our health care system is not overwhelmed. Experts agree that the best way to do that is social distancing however the extent to which you do this should be based on your own risk profile.
04.01.2022 Glenorchy City Council will need to make some very tough decisions over the coming months. I've attached a letter outlining measures that I will be promoting and supporting in response. My primary concern remains that the local government sector and specifically GCC uses this crisis as a catalyst for much-needed change and that the financial responsibility for future budget deficits isn't deferred entirely to ratepayers. I've moderated my language in this letter from my original post yesterday out of respect for GCC's employees, who are doing a wonderful job throughout this crisis, and also the Council’s GM who was very upset with my reference to salary freezes. Stay healthy out there.
