25.01.2022 Have you ever cut your finger when preparing dinner? It's annoying I know. Here is an easy, quick way to stop the bleeding fast. It's called styptic powder This is from my book Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz
24.01.2022 Here is a great way to grow food if you live in a situation, where you can't have a large vege garden. This method is easy and I have shared it a few times, but I thought with all the new members, that perhaps sharing it again wouldn't go astray. If you live in a transient situation, or want to be able to move plants around to suit the weather, then this could be a method for you to try. I call it Guerilla Gardening, some call it the Kratky method. The following is an exerp...t from my book "Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz" We also made a video that shows you how to make your own Guerilla Buckets and it's had nearly 215,000 views on youtube!!!! Here is the link https://youtu.be/PqArMDSq4Fo Guerilla Buckets I love this idea. It is the perfect solution for water hungry plants and it’s also portable. If you are renting, this is something you could try, because if you have to move, you can take your garden with you. Guerilla Buckets are made with large, lidded food grade buckets that you can find for free. Usually bakeries have them and will give them to you if you ask. We paint all the buckets with a black paint, so that the light doesn’t penetrate into the water and it also protects them from the sun. We use larger net cups for the buckets and have grown larger plants like tomatoes, celery and cauliflower in them. The idea is the same as the hydroponic pipes, as you cut a hole in the lid to fit the net cup and a couple of overflow holes in the side of the bucket about 2 inches from the top and that’s it. The larger net cups don’t come with the foam inserts, so I use river pebbles gently placed around the base of the plant to keep them in place. We fill the bucket with water with the right amount of the hydroponic nutrients, the same as we use in the pipes and place the buckets around the garden. Again, no digging, no weeding and portable. Gardening never got so easy! PS. You can find the net cups and the hydroponic nutrients online. See more
24.01.2022 A friend, Brooke, shared some of her home made Lemonade last week. It wasn't your run of the mill lemonade, this one packed a punch. OMG. It was so yummo. Thanks Brooke I love making different types of drinks and I really love making some of them alcoholic. I make them in different ways, like my strawberry bourbon, that I will share with you when the strawberries are ready for harvest. It's to die for, I promise In the picture is a page from my book "Simple Living, Starting from Scratch" I share with you a very simple way to create your own power packed fruit drinks, that you won't want to share with the kids, lololol.
21.01.2022 I love making socks. I get to make them whatever size I want, long or short, 5ply or 8 ply. I've even made some in 3 ply. I always use pure wool but I'm wondering what bamboo or cotton would be like? I promised to give you my pattern. Now you can adjust this in a million ways. You can use different size needles and you can add more stitches to make them bigger or you can add rows. You can fancy them up with different patterns like stripes. It's up to you. Here is the b...asic pattern. Cast on 40 stitches ( I like to use size 4 1/2) Rib for 10 rows. Change to larger needles (i like size 6) Stocking Stitch 30 Rows Create the Heal: With right side facing k17 turn. slip 1 purl 15 turn. slip 1 knit 13 turn. slip 1 purl 11 turn. slip 1 knit 9 turn. keep going like this until the row slip 1 purl 3 has been done. Turn slip 1 knit 3 turn. slip 1 purl 5 turn. slip 1 knit 7 turn until the p 17 row has been worked. turn slip 1 knit to end finishing with a purl row. Stocking stitch 45 rows. Create the Tow: (s1, k1, psso, k16 k2 tog) twice. Purl 1 row. (s1 k1 psso, k14 k2tog) twice. purl 1 row. (s1 k1 psso, k12 k2tog) twice. purl one row. Contintue to decrease on alternative rows until 16sts remain. Place 8 sts on each needle and cast off in pairs, using a spare needle. Sew up. See more

10.01.2022 Part of living simply, off the grid, means that I love to create from scratch. I like knowing what's in the food we eat and I also like to know that the best ingredients I can find, are what's in it. So, just because I can go to the supermarket and buy everything pre made, I don't really know what's gone into those products. But by making as many things as I can myself, I am reassured that we don't have to eat all the preservatives, chemicals and fake ingredients, but just... real food. I also like to know what is in my cleaning products and personal care products. Most people don't realise how easy it is to create their own products at home and at way less cost than the store bought stuff. Too many products on the supermarket shelves have chemicals that aren't good for us or our pets, so making your own, with natural ingredients, is not just easy, but smart. I feel that the majority of the population has lost many of the skills to create their own food, household cleaning and personal care products. That's why I have written my books, "Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz" and "Simple Living, Starting from Scratch". These books have so many hints, tips and recipes so that you can learn how to make your own products from scratch. You will not only know exactly what is in the products but you will also know that there will be no harmful chemicals. I have included all the information about how we live Off the Grid and talk about our solar, water, hydroponic garden, etc. I also give you lots of information about how to organise your simple life and how to be as self reliant as you possibly can be. In the books, I will show you how to make things like Bread, Yogurt, Ice Cream, Condensed Milk, Jam, Fermented Foods and Drinks, Hair Care products, Healing Balms, Apple Cider Vinegar, Scones, Muesli, Golden Syrup, Nut Milk, Gummy Bears, Styptic Powder, Magnesium Oil, Playdough, Modelling Clay, Chalk, Firelighters, Infused Oils and Vinegars, Butter, Ghee, Household Cleaning Products and the list goes on and on and on. I have even added some of my Grandmother's recipes, that includes many things like Apple Pie, a range of biscuits and slices, Pavlova, Mousse, Creamy Celery Soup, Tomato Sauce, Golden Syrup Dumplings and many, many more. If you would like to buy these books, they cost $47 each, including delivery. If you would like to buy both, I will send them to you, if you live anywhere in Australia, for just $85. These books make great gifts for people in your life who are wanting to live a more simple, self reliant, healthier lifestyle. Help me to keep these old fashioned skills alive. Message me today and I'll send you the details of how to get your own copies and gifts for your loved ones. :) See more
09.01.2022 I decanted a few jars today and put a few more into play. I decanted Mullein Tincture, Comfrey oil, Thyme Tincture, Lemon balm Tincture and created some Magnesium Oil. I have put down some calendula oil, mullein oil and comfrey oil. I'm waiting for next brew day to put down a few more Tinctures. I love playing with herbs. Don't you?
09.01.2022 This is the simplist kids christmas present I can think of that you can make yourself. Bath Paint !!! Just make up a few little plastic jars of different colours and pop in a paint brush and artists pallette and the kids will love it. Mum will too, because it is an easy clean up :) You'll find this recipe on page 123 in my book "Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz"
09.01.2022 I love our bees and I love the honey they give us. If you collect your own honey then I thought I would share ways to use it, other than on toast :) These ideas are good even if you don't have bees but love honey. :) This is from my book Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz, page 52 :)
06.01.2022 I'm putting on my witches hat today lololol. I'm going to make a couple of different salves. Comfrey (comfrey has fantastic results in speeding the healing process, Due to the 'Allantoin' in the comfrey itself, which speeds cell regeneration. Great on open wounds, cuts etc. Promotes and speeds the... healing of skin, tissue, muscle, tendon and bone. Plantain (natures bandaid.... Plantain salve is just that, the perfect medicine to treat all of lifes little cuts, scrapes, stings and abrasions. Chilli (chilli is a great pain reliever and I like to add wintergreen and peppermint oils to give it an even bigger boost) St Johns Wort (Eases the pain of nerve conditions such as injuries to fingers or toes. Cold Sores. Shingles. Herpes virus. Very sore paper cuts, puncture wounds eg needle pricks. Minor Burns.) Each is special in it's own right. The basic recipe is below if you would like to make your own. Just substitute the Calendula Oil with the herbal infused oil that you have already prepared. This recipe is also in my book "Simple Living, Off the Grid in Oz" page 109. As I'm making quite a few jars of these, I'll probably put some up for sale, cos there really is just so much room here. I love to create these, but I always make too much just for us, lolol. I have the same problem when I cook because I always make extra. I think this is a hangover from a bygone era when having enough for a stray visitor was always a good idea. :)
05.01.2022 Who doesn't love something sweet to munch on during the day? I know I do. I love to create these little balls of sweetness and I know that they are not just yummo, but they are also healthy. They are chockers full of the good stuff like magnesium. Have a go at making some today :) This recipe is included in my book, Simple Living, Starting from Scratch, page 79 :)
05.01.2022 I made some little pots of natural lip balms this week. I love making these because they are easy, quick and they are lovely to apply to dry lips. You don't have to worry about any chemical nasties that may be in some commercial brands. I used Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Vanilla Extract and Wild Orange oil. And potted them all into the cutest little containers. I have included a page (no. 1119) from my book Simple Living, Starting from Scratch which will help get ...you started in making your own lip balms. I have added some of my lip balms into my shop if you would like to buy a couple. :)
04.01.2022 On Monday I made some Beeswax Wrap Bars. These are a blend of beeswax, pine resin and jojoba oil. What you need to do if you want to make some of these, is melt them all together and pour into a mould. Then it's just a matter of applying it to some cotton fabric, allowing it to dry and then voila you have beeswax wraps. I use 100 gms of beeswax, 50 gms of gum resin and 25gms jojoba oil. It takes about 45 minutes to melt and blend these, which I do in a pyrex jug sitting in... a saucepan of water, that reaches about half way up the jug. I stir it with a wooden chop stick. In the pictures below, I have included the instructions on how to make the actual wraps :) If you don't want to make your own, I have made a few and have them up for sale in my shop for $15 for 4 bars which weigh about 100gms all up. :)
