The Team at Simply Beautiful Smiles would like to wish all of our Mums, Grand Mothers and Mothers-to-Be the happiest of Mothers’ Days this Sunday. 03.05.2022 Informed consent matters! At Simply Beautiful Smiles, we are passionate about educating our patients on every step of their smile journey to ensure they are making the choice that is right for them. This patient approached us after beginning a process for veneers at another practice without being fully informed of the procedure and risks, which made her uncomfortable. After detailed and careful discussions, Dr Andrew Peterson placed 10 conservative porcelain veneers on her to...p teeth to colour correct and straighten her smile. We were thrilled with how happy she was with the result, but especially that she felt comfortable proceeding with us and with the transparency of our process.

27.04.2022 We are excited to announce that when you google us, you will now be greeted with our new-look website! We have designed it to make it easier for our patients to view our work, answer their questions and contact us. We hope you like it! Check us out at www.simplybeautifulsmiles.com.au

08.04.2022 Another "Wow" Cosmetic Smile Makeover Our Miss April for 2022, is a lovely young lady in her early seventies, who has a voracious appetite for life. After a career spanning several decades in the air, travelling across the globe and taking amazing care of thousands of other people, it was time to do something just for herself!... Worn and chipped teeth, discolourations and gaps, all looked back from the mirror. All the upper teeth, and the lower front teeth were rebuilt with porcelain/zirconia crowns. The bite was restored to function and the worn-down teeth rebuilt to the correct height. Our team is truly thrilled for her and very much enjoy how she loves the view from her new window on life! Our wonderful patient now has wings of her own now, as she settles in to enjoy a lifetime of smiles. Another beautiful smile makeovers by one of our cosmetic dentists, Dr John Wells.

25.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT - Invisalign, Tooth Bonding and Porcelain/Zirconia BridgE for a beautiful, conservative smile makeover: This lovely lady in her early thirties had a complex case which involved misshapen teeth, crooked teeth and an old porcelain/metal bridge that was a poor match for colour/shape. This smile was treated with a combination of Invisalign clear aligners to correct the tooth position and straighten the teeth. The bridge on the upper right was replaced with a new p...orcelain/zirconia bridge. Some biting edge chips and teeth irregularities were in-filled with tooth coloured "bonding". The deeply impacted lower right tooth was left as it was to decrease the complexity of the orthodontics and reduce overall treatment time. Overall the treatment time was approximately 18 months. The treatment was conservative and tooth preserving. Both myself and the patient are very happy to achieve this result. This smile is fuller and exudes confidence. An excellent bridge was made by our gun team at Davis Advanced Dental Prosthetics, here in Penrith.

25.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: This wonderful, health conscious lady presented with a discoloured smile and asked for some improvement if possible. The teeth were quite dark and the smile was crooked. The teeth leaned upwards on an angle to the right. Initially, several smile options were discussed involving treating the upper 6, 8 or even 10 teeth to lift the smile. The six upper front teeth were initially rejuvenated with porcelain/zirconia crowns, due to wear and the heavily cracked nat...ure of these teeth. After seeing the front 6 teeth in the "trial smile" temporary phase, our lovely patient elected to add 2 more side teeth to the plan, which were rebuilt with porcelain veneers. The final treatment was then 8 upper front teeth re-aligned, rejuvenated, whitened and slightly lengthened. The bottom teeth had some teeth whitening undertaken at home with one of our custom fitted tray systems. This is a beautiful result achieved in just a few visits, and an endless supply of smiles were given to all. Our patient is very happy. This beautiful porcelain veneer and porcelain crown smile case was designed, constructed and custom finished by hand at our Australian owned and operated Australian Best Practice dental prosthetics laboratory, Grant Davis Advanced Prosthetics, right here in Penrith. The original smile design was digitally enhanced and custom designed for this individual case. Every smile is original and our smile patients have a private consultation with master prosthetist, Grant Davis, to discuss and assess nuances for the smile, to ensure our patients get the smile they will really love.

25.01.2022 February 2020 - GUM DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH! Gum Disease (medical term periodontitis) has been referred to as a silent epidemic. Many people actually suffer from gum disease and many are unaware of this condition. In the USA over half of adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease and potentially 85% of all Americans suffer from gum disease. Some interesting facts:... Gum disease is contagious you can get gum disease from kissing or even sharing utensils, thus a parent can pass on gum disease to children simply by sharing utensils. Gum disease is silent you may not even know that you have gum diseases until an advanced stage of the disease Gum disease is chronic our bodies work around the clock to combat the bacterial infection associated with gum disease and it leaves us vulnerable to other diseases These are quite astounding statistics and facts. In 2012 a national and global awareness campaign was launched in an effort to raise public awareness of gum disease, and February 2020 has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month. You might ask yourself so is gum disease such a huge problem to health? The answer is a resounding YES! The reason being that there are links between gum disease and other health conditions including even very serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers and dementia, pregnancy complications and birth defects, respiratory disease, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis and even obesity, not to mention all the things going on in the mouth itself, which ultimately lead to deep pockets of infection, severe bone loss and eventually teeth falling out because of the loss of the supporting bone. There are risk factors to be aware of to help us reduce the probability of getting gum disease, and in many cases (though not all), gum disease is totally preventable. Taking care of your teeth and gums is always the least painful and least expensive path to good oral health. I thoroughly also recommend professional cleaning at the dentist every 6 months to ensure that no problems are developing and if so, that they can be addressed in the very early stages which can lead to better outcomes. If you would like more information about gum disease, I can highly recommend that you visit this site: https://fightgumdisease.com.au/ For further information, please always feel free to discuss any issues when you visit for your regular dental check-ups. Our check-up visits are very competitive and we offer Hicaps for those in a health fund. Whilst we are highly trained in both implant and cosmetic dentistry, we also offer general dentistry to service all your general dental needs. Regards, John

24.01.2022 Hello Everyone, I am delighted to be able to tell you that restrictions on dental practices have now been reduced to Level 1 as from Friday 8th May. What this means for our office and our patients, is that we are able to perform all dental procedures. A heightened awareness as to community conditions is still required and as always, we take above standard levels of care and precautions to protect both our patients and our team. Under Level 1 Restrictions we still have additio...nal pre-screening questions, and social distancing and sanitation measures. We may ask questions such as the following: Have you... 1. Been overseas in the last two weeks? 2. Had contact with a known/suspected COVID-19 case in the last two weeks? 3. Resided in or visited a known high-risk area with a cluster of cases? 4. Recently tested positive for COVID-19? 5. Demonstrated any of the following symptoms: - Fever - A cough - Sore throat - Shortness of breath - Fatigue - Other respiratory symptoms - Recent loss of smell/taste We wish you all well, safe keeping and look forward to assisting you with all of your dental needs with some small resemblance of return to normality. Kind Regards Dr John Wells

23.01.2022 Dental Implants for a Functional and Aesthetically Pleasing Result: This lovely lady in her 70s presented wearing a partial upper denture for the 2 upper front teeth. She hated wearing a denture as it made her feel old and it moved when she ate. She is a spritely lady and very social. The denture lessened her social experience and reduced her ability to enjoy food.... She was concerned that nothing could be done to help. A dental implant solution was discussed, involving the placement of 2 dental implants to replace the missing two front teeth. These were restored after 4 months of bone integration and healing, with a splinted pair of porcelain/zirconia crowns. The entire treatment time was approximately 6 months. She was still able to wear her current denture through the healing phase of the implants osseo-integration, that is, the fusing of the implants into the natural bone. This procedure was relatively painless and the patient required no post-operative pain medication at all! Our wonderful patient is very confident in her smile now and loves her new teeth. The gum response is outstanding and her ability to chew also with confidence is a great boost to her lifestyle. All around a very satisfying and pleasing outcome for a technically difficult smile procedure.

23.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: This lovely lady in her 60's had a worn bite, which led to her chipping the upper and lower front teeth. Her bite was opening up by adding a bit of white filling material to the biting surface of the upper back teeth, a very conservative approach. ... A small minimally-invasive, non-painful, laser gum lift was undertaken to the upper 4 front teeth to improve the tooth length and shape of the gums. A lower tooth that was badly damaged, was restored with a porcelain/zirconia crown. The six upper front teeth were similarly restored with 6 porcelain/zirconia crowns. The teeth were whitened slightly with the porcelain, but not too much, at the patient's request and by mutual consultation. This choice blended the teeth in nicely with the remaining teeth for a very pleasing result. A protective anti-grinding night guard was made to protect the teeth from further wear during night time clenching and grinding activity. Night time clenching/grinding (and some-times during the day too) is called "bruxism" and is a common cause of premature tooth wear and joint pain. Our wonderful patient is constantly smiling broadly now and very happy with her new smile. It is a very satisfying result for our team too, and a pleasure to create a beautiful smile.

22.01.2022 Smile Highlight 2019 - Great result with implants and crowns This active man in his early forties presented with a fractured root on the upper left front tooth. Along with the fracture was an abscess and the tooth was very loose. Both upper front teeth had old crowns and both had root canal treatments many years ago. The upper left front tooth could not be saved and was removed. A temporary bridge was placed to replace this now missing tooth, and was attached temporarily to t...he upper right front tooth. A dental implant was then placed in the missing upper left front tooth position, and after 4 to 6 months of bone healing/integration, a new crown was placed on top of the dental implant. The final restorations were porcelain zirconia crowns on the 2 upper front teeth. The patient is very happy with the result as we were able to save the upper right front tooth and restore the smile and his chewing function. A terrific result on what was a difficult case to preserve bone and gum tissues after a large fracture of the root.

20.01.2022 Losing my teeth has changed me, like a disease Last month, the SBS OnDemand program Insight looked at why so many Australians struggle with poor dental health and what effect it had on their lives. Whilst I did not watch the program, there was a write up about it put out by the Australian Dental Association. Here is a link to the preview, where you can also sign in for access to the full program....Continue reading

20.01.2022 Smile of Her Dreams Gum lift and Porcelain Veneers with Crown: Our wonderful patient in her 50’s, presented with a smile that she didn’t like. Her main concerns included the reverse line of her smile line, crooked and discoloured teeth, as well as a mismatch in tooth proportion. She has always wished for a Hollywood smile and wanted a really white, wider smile.... This was achieved with minor gum lift, using an acoustic laser, to achieve gum re-contouring. Whiter porcelain veneers have been created and a porcelain crown to cover a previously heavily filled, bonded tooth. Our constantly smiling patient is incredibly excited about her new smile and loves the brilliant result. Veneering the bottom front teeth and replacing the upper back teeth old crowns with whiter ones are future projects being considered. We are so happy to help this lovely lady with the smile of her dreams.

19.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: This lovely lady in her 60s presented with broken down heavily filled and discoloured teeth. Her main complaint was the colour and alignment of the teeth. After a thorough examination and consultation process, we co-decided to rebuild the teeth to strengthen them, rehabilitate the deep bite and at the same time improve the shape, alignment and colour of the teeth. All of this was achieved with replacement of the missing teeth with titanium dental implants, t...hen restoring these dental implants and the remaining heavily filled natural teeth with porcelain/zirconia crowns. Our patient is overjoyed with the cosmetic result and can eat with restored function and confidence with her new smile. A wonderful outcome with a complex, multidimensional case involving many of the new and exciting techniques available to create beautiful, designer smiles.

19.01.2022 This ANZAC Day is a special one for many reasons. Being apart from friends and loved-ones does not mitigate nor minimise the essence of Mateship. The theme for ANZAC Day this year is Mateship. As we pause and reflect upon the sacrifice and accepted burden of those who served and those who continue to serve, those who support those in service, the families of Veterans and those that were left behind, we remember that we are free and safe, because of their selfless service. I...n these uncertain times, those who serve have stepped to the fore once again, to fight another unseen common enemy, and stand aside those who first respond, look after our health, our well-being and provide essential services. To all of you we say "Thank You" and we express extreme gratitude. Lest We Forget.

19.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: No Need to Travel to the City - World-class Dentistry here in Penrith This terrific, outgoing young lady in her 40s presented with a crooked smile, several gaps in her smile, worn and discoloured teeth. In addition, the lower teeth were in a "crossed bite" and overlapped the upper teeth. This made the wear even more severe and caused the teeth to move into an abnormal position. A decision was made to reshape the lower teeth where possible and undertake some ...teeth whitening. The upper 6 front teeth were prepared with porcelain/zirconia crowns, to boost the smile and "jump" the bite to a more normal position. The teeth were re-aligned, whitened and the smile broadened for an amazing result and megawatt smile lift. Our wonderful patient is very happy with this result and beams at every opportunity. This beautiful porcelain and zirconia smile case was designed, constructed and custom finished by hand at our Australian owned and operated dental prosthetics laboratory, Grant Davis Advanced Prosthetics, right here in Penrith. World Class dentistry, local and Aussie made. Indeed, no need to travel into the city!

18.01.2022 A Beautiful Smile Achieved with Porcelain Veneers: This lovely lady in her early 30’s has a crooked smile line and severe wear on the edges of her front teeth. Her brief was to align the smile line and make the teeth straighter and whiter.... 6 premium porcelain veneers were constructed to rehabilitate the upper front teeth. A protective night guard was made to prevent the attrition and damage caused by night time teeth grinding. This simple and effective acrylic device will improve the lifespan of the porcelain and reduce the symptoms of jaw/teeth pain associated with clenching and grinding. There may be additional veneers on the upper side teeth (2 either side) which can be considered as an optional next stage of treatment, to broaden the smile even further. We have a very happy patient who is smiling a lot more and very proud of her new smile. A beautiful outcome for a beautiful young lady by Dr John Wells

16.01.2022 Late last week, an article crossed my desk from one of the dental magazines that I subscribe to. The article was in relation to poor oral health in older Australians. I note that the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch (ADA NSW) were to make a number of recommendations to the Royal Commission into Aged Care and Safety on Thursday 16th July 2020. ADA NSW is urging the Australian Government to introduce: - Oral health check-ups for over 75s under Medicare...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Reimagined Smile with Porcelain Veneers - Cant Stop Smiling! A lovely young lady in her 40s presented with uneven teeth, antibiotic induced "grey" discolouration and gaps between her teeth. She wanted a better, whiter smile and no gaps. These 6 upper front teeth were re-imagined and restored with porcelain veneers. They were whitened and aligned and the gaps closed.... Note the beautiful gum condition around the porcelain veneers and healthy, pink, healed result. Some additional take home teeth whitening was done for the bottom front teeth. Our patient is very happy with her new smile and smiles ever more broadly. This beautiful porcelain veneer smile case was designed, constructed and custom finished by hand at our Australian owned and operated, Australian Best Practice dental prosthetics laboratory, Grant Davis Advanced Prosthetics, right here in Penrith.

13.01.2022 Dear Friends What a year weve had so far? Who would ever have thought as we came into this year, 2020, that it would be turning out the way it has so far. So many people were looking forward to 2020 as a dawn of a new decade, a clean slate, a chance to perhaps spend some introspective time looking at our lives (20/20 vision) and where we were headed. I for one was one of those, determined to focus on where I was, what I wanted to achieve, and how to get there. Bring on 2020 ...was my mantra! Summer came with continued drought, and smoke and haze thickened our air and darkened our normally clear blue skies. We all knew of someone who had lost a home or had been evacuated. Most of us were forced to stay indoors. Then the rains washed it all away and we could rejoice as the gardens finally sprang to life. Then, before we knew it, we were all blindsided by COVID-19, a very real threat to our normal way of life. Summer was already basically a write-off and now autumn looked to be the same. And mostly, still stuck at home (not smoke or dust this time, but an unseen threat). Easter came and went - a traditional time of hope and rebirth. A time I would normally spend with my beautiful family. With everything that has happened, this is what I know: - It is what it is; - There will always be a tomorrow; - What will be will be, and; - Time is precious! I am spending 2020 doing what I was hoping to do, just not as I had planned. The Serenity Prayer keeps coming to mind, and I find that it is somehow quite comforting. I am also comforted in the knowledge that we are all going through this experience together. And together we will get through this - we always do. :) And so it seems that I am getting my wish for being able to spend time being introspective and getting some 20/20 vision on where I am going. Lord knows, I rarely get quiet time. At the office, we have had very few patients, as we elected to stay open to help with emergency dentistry. The team have stayed very positive and we keep each other going. Working one room each, we have been playing the music a little louder than usual and those that dont like our current choice in music wear headphones for their own music or noise blocking headphones to work on their own work projects. There has been a wonderful camaraderie and a lot of the usual day-to-day stress is not there. The whole situation is somehow surreal. Keep smiling and keep faith that this too will pass. Kindest regards, John

13.01.2022 We are Renovating for a Fresh New Look - Please be Patient If you visit our clinic in the coming weeks you may notice some changes! Dr Wells and Dr Peterson are excited to announce that we are beginning renovations to bring you fresh clinic and patient relaxation spaces for 2021.... We are developing an additional clinic space for Dr Peterson, and preparing for the arrival of exciting new technologies to ensure that Simply Beautiful Smiles is always at the cutting edge of dental excellence. Key to our ethos at Simply Beautiful Smiles is delivering a patient experience that does not feel like a cold clinical environment. This has been updated regularly throughout the practice's history and now is the time for a fresh new coat of paint! Please be patient with us during this time as we juggle the pressures of staying available for our patients and managing a construction site. Rest assured, thorough twice daily dusting and cleaning is being conducted to maintain our high standards of hygiene and comfort. Please note that in the process of renovating, our telephone lines were severely disrupted. We apologise for missed messages, which, unfortunately, we are unable to recover. We are doing our very best to get the telephone lines and answering service back on line. Warm regards, John and Andrew

13.01.2022 A bit of light fun for your Friday! Throwback to when Dr John and his youngest daughter Ashleigh had a father daughter quiz on Disney Channel: "How well does Wells know Wells?" In these tough times, its important and stay connected as much as possible with family and loved ones, especially during self isolation. Sending you all positive, warm energy.... Right now Its either laugh, or cry, or both! At least we can still laugh at ourselves!

There has been a wonderful camaraderie and a lot of the usual day-to-day stress is not there. The whole situation is somehow surreal. Keep smiling and keep faith that this too will pass. Kindest regards, John

12.01.2022 Dr Andrew Peterson was recently accepted into the prestigious Kings College in London to study a 3 year post graduate program in prosthodontics (a study of complex dental treatment including bite management, full-mouth rehabilitation, aesthetic dental treatments and implant dentistry to create not only functional but beautiful smiles). Dr Peterson started this course recently, and has just returned from his intensive learning block at Kings College in London. He is very much looking forward to providing our patients an exceptional level of beautiful dental care as he continues to complete his masters. The team here is very happy to have Dr Peterson back, safe and sound, and Andrew "looks forward to seeing you all in the coming months with renewed vigour

12.01.2022 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Hours of Operation Over the Christmas Period: On behalf of Dr Peterson, our Team at Simply Beautiful Smiles, and myself, I would like to wish all of our patients a joyous and safe Christmas and a New Year filled with happy memories. Most of our patients would say that 2020 has been a particularly difficult year. For myself, it meant a lot of extra work as we worked our way through Covid regulations and trying to maintain a service to our ...patients, and at the same time, work for our Team. Also, mid-year, Dr Peterson became a full partner in Simply Beautiful Smiles, and together we are now working our way through renovations and a whole new makeover, which we look forward to unveiling in 2021. Some of our patients have had a glimpse into what we are doing, as it is a slow process. We are very excited to showcase this in the new year. We will be closing over Christmas and New Year for a well-deserved rest. Many of my patients have remarked that I look tired, and I most certainly am. I need a recharge and am looking forward to a renewed sense of vigour to start the year. Likewise, Dr Peterson, who took the dive into practice ownership, plus renovations on top of taking on his Aesthetic Dentistry Masters course is looking forward to recharging, so that he can likewise be the best version of himself to his patients in 2021. Both Dr Peterson and myself have little if any available time between now and Christmas, so if you have any niggling issues, now is the time to call our office to get those issues sorted. The last thing you want is to have to put up with pain over the Christmas/New Year break. Hours of Operation over the Holiday Period: Our practice will remain open for general appointments until Wednesday 23rd December 2020. We reopen on Monday 11th January. From time to time we will check the answering machine and any emails, but please be advised that we may not be able to assist in a timely manner, and of course we will likely only be able to offer advice, given that we are closed.

12.01.2022 This week is Dental Health Week in Australia. It always surprises me the number of people that actually dont understand that sugar is detrimental to our health and wellbeing. The Cancer Council of Victoria has put out an article with this heading One soft drink a day could increase your risk of cancer.... It goes on to describe how increased cancer risk is not driven completely by obesity. Obesity seems to be related to particular forms of cancer, like liver, ovarian, pancreatic and gallbladder cancers. But what is interesting to note is that even people who are not overweight have an increased risk of cancer if they regularly drank soft drinks containing sugar. This is not the case for people who drink diet soft drinks, suggesting that a key contributor to these forms of cancer may not be obesity but sugar. The study analysed over 35,000 Victorians over a twelve year period, who went on to develop 3,283 cases of these obesity-related cancers. I often wonder when I read articles attributing obesity or poor oral health to conditions such as dementia, heart disease, diabetes, stroke or a multitude of other diseases. It always makes me think of the chicken and the egg which came first? Does poor eating for example cause poor oral hygiene or obesity, which then causes stroke as an example, or could it be something like sugar that is in the poor diets, that causes the poor oral health, obesity and perhaps even cancer itself? Regardless, I guess that it appears that they are all related somehow, and research supports this again and again. There are certainly very strong links between sugar and oral health, and the general wellbeing from a health perspective of the individual as a whole. I recommend trying to avoid sugar as much as possible. Try chewing sugar-free gum if you would like to break a soft drink habit. If you dont like the taste of plain water, try a small squeeze of lemon or lime juice. Check so-called sugar substitutes as well. These may be just as bad for you from a sugar point of view as they are really sugars by another name. See this chart put out by the Australian Dental Association. Kind regards John

12.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: This lovely lady in her 60’s presented with broken down heavily filled and discoloured teeth.

12.01.2022 Porcelain Veneers used to cover Tetracycline Staining, for a Natural, Beautiful Result: Tetracycline is a common problem we encounter at Simply Beautiful Smiles. This patient presented with a personality larger than life and a naturally proportioned smile. Unfortunately she had highly filled front teeth that had occurred as a previous attempt to improve the appearance after tetracycline staining in her youth.... The natural proportion of her teeth was kept and enhanced with beautiful and conservative porcelain veneers. Dr Andrew Peterson

11.01.2022 From the desk of Dr John Wells, Sunday 29th March 2020. Hello to all of patients, colleagues, auxiliary services providers and our greater community. In these uncertain times of the COVID-19 health emergency my team and I wish you well, safety and lets all hope, a speedy, healthful outcome for all of us. For the sake of all of our lives and all of our livelihoods we need to continue to work together. Throughout my life starting as a child immigrant, to spending the last 40...Continue reading

10.01.2022 This Christmas and New Year, may the gift of Love fill your Heart, the gift of Peace calm your Soul,... and the gift of Happiness fill your Days. Can you believe that it is almost already Christmas again? The year has gone so fast I cannot believe it. I gather from a lot of you in my chats with you, that this is somewhat normal! Again, I feel so blessed to have so many of you as patients. Over the years, so many of you also have become good friends. Some laugh when they remember the boyish good looks of their dentist some 34 years ago. "You cant be the dentist" they exclaimed. "You look like you should still be in school!!" I thought about mentioning a few of you in particular that have become dear friends, but then I thought that this post would become too long and besides which, I am no longer the young boy and I was, and I am afraid that if I missed someone, you would think I am over the hill. Thank you for all the kind words, the pleasant emails, the fun sms text messages, the Thank You cards and gifts to the Team, the wonderful Google reviews , and all of the referrals of friends and loved ones. Our Word-of-Mouth referrals are still our largest source of referrals, and I thank you for your trust in us here at Simply Beautiful Smiles. There are some famous words written - "Life was not meant to be easy my child", and often the tail end of this oft used phrase is left off - "but take courage: it can be delightful." (George Bernard Shaw). I know that times can sometimes be very difficult and that going to the dentist can often be a fate worse than death as some have put it, but I would like to think that at the end of the day, I have helped in some small way to bring a smile to most of the faces that come to visit. Please, if you have any niggling dental issues, try to visit as soon as possible. We already have very little appointment time before now and when we break for the Christmas holidays. Our annual shut down for the Christmas break starts at NOON on Friday 20th December 2019. We reopen at 8:00am on Monday 6th January 2020. On behalf of myself, my family and the Team here at Simply Beautiful Smiles, I would like to wish to all a joyous and safe Christmas shared with frineds and loved ones, and a successful 2020. Warmest regards, John

09.01.2022 Wishing You a Safe and Happy Easter! For many of our patients here at Simply Beautiful Smiles, Easter is a holiday with deep meaning and celebration. I love the thought of chocolate eggs and rabbits at Easter. They are a symbol of new birth, new beginnings. They are also a symbol of celebration.... From everyone here at Simply Beautiful Smiles, we wish you a safe and happy Easter with friends and loved ones. Kindest regards John Please note that our office will be closed during the Easter break, from 1:30pm on Thursday, 18th April, and we reopen 7:00am on Tuesday, 23rd April 2019.

08.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Who ever would have thought we would all find ourselves in this situation! Yesterday apparently, dentists were in the firing line by some members of the general public for being open and using up masks etc. We are currently open and trying to complete cases that we started and which cannot wait for any prolonged period of time, in the event that there is a lockdown. Whilst our business model is not geared to an emergency practice, we do still have patients that h...ave issues that cannot be left unattended, for those wanting to keep their teeth. Keeping teeth or having implants placed where teeth have been lost prolongs health and longevity and that is well documented. Some practices are already reducing their staff levels and minimising contact with patients. Dentists generally have been given access to limited numbers of masks as the government appreciates that dentistry is an essential service. If you have ever had a dental emergency and had to attend as a hospital emergency, you will have experienced most likely that you were turned away. Hospitals are simply not geared for dental emergencies we are. Whilst we can still operate, we will be available for emergency dentistry as well as some other procedures, but only in business hours. I strongly urge you to keep informed via our Blog and Facebook pages. We will man (or person?) telephones for as long as we can, but strongly advise that if you have to leave a message on the answering machine, that you also send an email to [email protected] and please have a telephone number listed in the email. We will be able to contact you to make an appointment if we are allowed to operate. Either way, we will get back to you as soon as practicable. In the meantime, this photo was taken this morning. We get one thumbs up at least! If you like what you see, please give us a thumbs up too! A lot of people are telling us that the dental surgery is the safest place to be at the moment. Warmest regards and stay safe. John

08.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day!! To celebrate, we thought wed share this fun clip of Dr John with his youngest daughter Ashleigh on the set of Disney Channels Hanging With.

08.01.2022 SMILE HIGHLIGHT: This lovely lady, in her middle years, had severe wear and attrition of the upper 2 front teeth. Her main concern was the "chipping" of the teeth and poor aesthetics. An examination revealed severely worn 2 upper front teeth and a traumatic bite from over erupted bottom teeth. The upper smile line appears as a reverse of the normal smile line, bending upwards making the front teeth appear short. Many options were available, including treating the 6 upper fron...t teeth to change the shape and overall colour of the smile. Alternatively, 2 teeth upper front teeth only may be treated with porcelain/zirconia crowns and the teeth matched to the existing teeth colour. This latter choice was made, to rebuild the shape, colour and length of the 2 upper front teeth. The lower front teeth were reshaped and reduced in length to accommodate the new bite and improve the smile line and overall aesthetics. The colour of the teeth was trialled and then custom tinted for effect, by our fantastic dental laboratory, right here in Penrith. The result is a great match to the original teeth colour and an overall great smile improvement, with minimum intervention. Our lovely patient is very happy with the result and more confident in her smile. A very pleasing result in all. This beautiful porcelain and zirconia smile case was designed, constructed and custom finished by hand at our Australian owned and operated dental prosthetics laboratory, Grant Davis Advanced Prosthetics, right here in Penrith. We are blessed and grateful to have a World Class dental laboratory right on our doorstep.

07.01.2022 Smile Highlight - Hollywood Smile Request: This likeable patient in his thirties, had a lot of old dentistry done many years ago in the Middle East. Over time, the old dentistry and missing teeth took their toll and a smile rehabilitation was indicated. Part of the brief for the smile was to improve the shape of the teeth, close the spaces, improve the bite and replace the old, failing bridgework. The bite position had collapsed, the teeth were worn and discoloured and ther...e was a large discrepancy between teeth size/jaw size, which resulted in many gaps between teeth. A complete smile makeover and bite/functional rehabilitation was undertaken, involving 26 teeth. This young fellow wanted a Hollywood Smile and chose a bold, white shade to match his complexion and new smile makeover. He carries it off very well and is very, very happy with his fabulous new smile. He regularly has positive comments form family, friends and business acquaintances which provides a great boost to his self-esteem and quality of life. A very satisfying result both for myself and our wonderful patient.

04.01.2022 August 2017, Smile Of The Month: This lovely young lady in her late 20s, was concerned about her smile. Her teeth were mildly crowded, discoloured, mottled with dental hypoplasia and she had multiple failing dental white fillings.... The goal for her treatment was a beautiful smile, with straighter, whiter teeth. This treatment outcome was achieved with a mixture of porcelain/zirconia crowns on the upper six front teeth, and ceramic/porcelain veneers on the 4 side premolar teeth. The result was the beautiful smile she wanted and also filled out the width of the smile in the cheek areas on both sides. She can now smile with confidence and is absolutely delighted with her new smile.

04.01.2022 Fantastic January 2019 Smile Makeover Result - Touch-ups following stubborn Orthodontics Treatment This lovely 30 year old lady had orthodontics in another practice to correct her bite and has just completed treatment. Unfortunately, the 2 canine teeth did not cooperate very well and remained locked somewhat upward in the palate and upper jaw bone. This was a troubling concern for the patient and she came to us to see if anything else could be done. She was very happy to hear... that, yes, we could help! First stage was a laser gum lift correction to re-establish a correct gum-line and even the contour heights to achieve a more pleasing emergence of the teeth from the gums. Secondly a course of take home teeth whitening to improve the overall teeth colour and balance the brightness. Finally, 2 custom porcelain crowns were designed specifically to replace the missing crown contours of the 2 canine teeth, aimed to both improve the shape and create smile harmony. This young lady is very pleased with the overall result and we have saved a difficult orthodontic case from disappointment. It was very satisfying for our team to help our wonderful patient create the smile of her dreams, and achievable only through the treatment skills and hands of the well-trained and very experience cosmetic dentist, Dr John Wells.

04.01.2022 Smile Highlight - A Very Challenging Yet Very Satisfying Case - Almost Cleft This gentlemen in his 60s has a very narrow upper arch and almost a cleft in his palate. As a result, the upper teeth were severely crowded, the gum was all in the wrong alignment and there was considerable cosmetic and functional default. The upper jaw teeth were reconstructed with porcelain zirconia crowns and a "gum lift" procedure undertaken to improve the appearance of the smiling gum line. ... The jaw appearance was widened, the teeth made a more natural size and the colour lightened. Future dental implants and crowns will develop the upper left arch even more and replace the remaining missing teeth in the smile line. This will be the subject of a future blog. Our lovely patient has a better bite, a more pleasing, natural and wider smile and is very happy with the result. This was a very satisfying case to treat, being both difficult, technically demanding and in the end providing a lasting, functional and aesthetic smile improving his quality of life.

03.01.2022 88 Year Old Rose* Just Called on a Sunday Morning - Coronavirus Unsettling Us All. Times are crazy! I have many dear patients that I love to chat with ... and oftentimes I also give out my personal mobile phone number to patients that have had complex surgery, like implant work. This has never been abused and some patients even include me for funny anecdotes etc which I enjoy. Anyhow, Rose* (her name has been changed for privacy purposes) called. She called me this morning, whilst I was reading the Sunday paper over breakfast yes, I am of a vintage that likes to read a hard copy of the newspaper (which I may have to save for other purposes when I am done at this rate. Desperate times call for desperate measures as they say - see the attached photo ). But hey, I also have over 35 years cosmetic dental experience which has to count for something! I have known and treated Rose and her family for over 25 years. Her family have moved around the country now but she is still very sprightly and independent and her mind is sharp as a tack. She lives over an hour away and still drives all the way to Penrith to see me by herself. So Rose, who recently had some surgery by another dental specialist that I referred her to, who I was going to call on Tuesday as part of my follow-up with her, though she was not in pain, wanted to ask if something she could feel with her tongue was normal. Moreover, her mind was racing she said and she had so much on her mind, it was lovely to speak to me though she was expecting to just leave a message. I would like to reassure everyone that we are here for you if you need us. We are doing our very best to look after all of our dental family which includes all of our patients and my dental team and if you have any concerns, please call us. Sometimes being listened to and offered a little reassurance goes a long way. For your reassurance, with regards to the current Coronavirus situation, please know that since mid-February, we instituted some extra practices to protect our team and our patients, including more regularly disinfecting surfaces, even door handles several times a day, not just in the clinical areas which are normally attended to on a very regular basis as it is. Our facilities and bathroom areas are being very closely monitored. Social distancing is being observed whenever possible (unfortunately my arms are not 2 metres long ). You will also be aware that we work on a pretty tight schedule so we dont have lots of people in our spacious patient lounge at any one time. Your health and safety is paramount to us and we wish you well in this difficult time. And finally, if you have a smile to spare, please give one away. Little random acts of kindness and a friendly word really does go a long way Kind regards John

03.01.2022 Coronavirus - How We Protect our Team and Our Patients from Airbourne Disease. At Simply Beautiful Smiles, we have a long history of strict Infection Control Guidelines, instituting the mandatory wearing of gloves and masks and protective gowns long before it was legislated as mandatory, in fact, basically since Dr Wells graduated and commenced treating in private practice (where his boss at the time even made him buy his own gowns (or laboratory coats), gloves and masks rath...er than supply them!). Every year, in the lead up to winter, and at times of certain outbreaks, staff are reminded again of the simple measures they can take even on a personal level even at home to prevent transmission of disease. The most simple things of not touching eyes, nose or mouth without first washing hands, and then again washing hands after touching the face or using tissues can mean the difference of getting sick or not getting sick or spreading sickness to loved ones or colleagues. Using alcohol hand washes and washing hands regularly are simple measures we can all take. We also regularly wipe down or wash surfaces, even down to the door handles, to minimise the risk of spread of infection. Some items that are difficult to clean are covered in plastic wrap and then replaced for each patient. (As much as we loathe the use of plastic, we have found no suitable replacement though we are looking into this as well to source better environmentally friendly products). This is all just part of our routine infection control measures. At Simply Beautiful Smiles, we use Surgical (Level 2) Masks. This is primarily to prevent transmission of disease to the health care worker, and from the health care worker to the patient. Here is an excerpt from the Australian Dental Association: Background on masks: Surgical (Level 2) grade masks are intended to protect both the health care provider and the patient because of their design and filtration. In a dental practice, procedures generate large quantities of aerosols (with the high-speed handpiece and/or triplex syringe when doing fillings and ultrasonic when doing cleaning) and a number of diseases may be transmitted via the airborne route. Consequently dentists must wear suitable fluid-resistant surgical masks that block particles of three microns or less to provide the correct level of protection. https://www.ada.org.au//Late/Masks-shortage-at-AU-dentists Further, these steps are also taken to help protect patients and staff alike: Please rest assured that we are keeping abreast of the developments taking place with regard to Coronavirus (an on almost hourly basis). Your safety and our safety is our primary concern and always has been. We pray that this will be over as quickly as possible with the least interruption as possible all round. In the meantime, I wish you good health. If you have any concerns, please feel free to call us on 4731 1599. Sincerely John

02.01.2022 Happy Australia Day! Sick of Watching the News? A Fun Diversion. This is a bit belated, but I am having a bit of a relaxing day after spending the weekend with friends and family and also some work around the place. Like everyone else, it is great to socialise, but there is also the mundane to attend to. Anyhow, today I find myself with a little bit of idle time and am catching up on some business emails (more mundane work?) and I see that my daughter, Ashleigh, sent me this ...link to add some fun to my day. So, for anyone that is tired of the same-old, same-old on the news, and if you have also found yourself with some rare idle time to take a break, you might likewise enjoy watching this. For those of you that dont know this, my daughter is a co-presenter of Hanging With on Disney channel. Here is a skit that they did: Hanging With - Straight Faced News https://youtu.be/zbWetm8HYdY By the way - interesting fact! Ashleigh had a black eye during this skit - a result of a sports injury as she is an avid Aus Tag player. See if you can pick it! Cosmetic makeovers, like Cosmetic Dentistry can make a world of difference. Keep smiling John

02.01.2022 Dr John Wells is understandably very proud that his daughter, Ashleigh, (Ash Wells) has been nominated for an AACTA award for Best Female Presenter. Some of our patients follow Ashleigh, having known her as a young girl sometimes spending time at the surgery during school holidays, often to be found on a spare dental chair watching her favourite Disney animation movies on the ceiling mounted TVs. Ashleigh has been co-hosting Disneys Hanging With for several years now, and th...is year has also been presenting and/or reporting for Gfinity Esports Australia and XGames 2018, as well as her usual Voice Over work with Australias leading voice over agent RMK. Some patients were entertained with Ashleighs cartoon character imitations she never ceases to amaze. Way to go Ash! xx

01.01.2022 Level 2 - Special Announcement from the ADA (Australian Dental Association) For all of our patients and expanded dental team and families, I thought I would share the latest update on Essential Dental Services - please refer to the information at the end of this notice. Simply Beautiful Smiles is part an Essential Service Profession and is currently fully available for continued care of our patients and community.... We are currently at Level 2 Essential Dental Services restrictions, which still means most available treatments are able to be routinely performed whilst continuing to provide a very safe environment for our patients, the dentist and our nursing team. The main focus will be minimising harm to your oral health and we will continue to treat those necessary conditions. We are also available for emergency dental treatment where needed. At this point in time, it is expected that Level 2 restrictions will be implemented until April 30th 2020. Standard infection control guidelines are more than adequate for the task. At Level 2, in some cases dental procedures may be deferred if the patients dental and general welfare is not at risk and these procedures may can be discussed with your doctor as appropriate. We are here and willing to assist you as always, even in these difficult times. Should you need to talk to your dentist about your up-coming procedures, please feel free to call and we will help you with any questions you may have. From my desk, I wish you all well, keep yourselves safe and please share a smile with someone who needs one. Kind regards John "Over the last few days, the ADA (Australian Dental Association) has been providing expert advice to the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and the Chief Medical Officer on a framework to support the continuation of essential dental service. This is based on a staged, proportionate, pre-planned response to the escalation of COVID-19. We have been working with the government who is satisfied at this time that the frameworks that have been developed and the work of the ADA Infection Control Committee are sufficient at this point in time to protect the public, dentists and their staff given the current risk environment. We believe that its important that we partner with government and regulators to continue to ensure everyone is kept safe in these unprecedented and challenging times." Dr Carmelo Bonanno (ADA president)
