21.01.2022 Our favorite Kyoto-ware cup - Tenmoku process We love this Kyoto-ware cup that illustrates the making process of Tenmoku (). Normally we cannot see red clay and white varnish under the glazed Tenmoku layer but this bowl is a great showpiece to demonstrate how Kyoto-ware is made with great care even not seen on the surface.... Pottery in Kyoto dates back to the late 5th century but in the 17th century, a renown local potter, Nonomura Ninsei set up a kiln and established a specific style of Ky0t0-ware. Local clay which is suitable for porcelain was not easily available in the Kyoto region. The potters of Kyoto therefore had to concentrate on developing elegant forms and originality. The term Kyoto-ware is more of an umbrella term to describe a wide variety of styles that were produced in Kyoto. However, one of the characteristics is a distinctive design and flamboyant colouring that symbolize court culture. Despite global mass productions have become the mainstream, Kyoto-ware is still being made by hand and Kyoto continues to be a representative production site for Japanese ceramics. The cup comes with a beautiful paper box. Size: 13cm H11cm Material: Porcelain clay + mineral glaze Microwave and dishwasher SAFE

20.01.2022 New Product : Chrysanthemum Byakudan Tray Introducing this chrysanthemum byakudan tray, handmade from Isuke Shoten in Kyoto with more than 180 years of history. The tray expresses the moon in a pure silver foil using the byakudan-nuri technique, which changes colour with the flow of time from an early reddish glow to the bright silver.... The byakudan-nuri technique uses many layers of Japanese natural lacquer urushi to completely seal the metal foils inside. Over the course of time, the reddish urushi becomes more translucent, gradually phasing in the metal shine of the underlying foil. This traditional technique was once thought to be almost lost, but has recently regained attention again for its unique feature. Size: 242 H48 (mm) Material: MDF wood board / Japanese natural lacquer urushi / Silver foil NOT Microwave, Dishwasher safe
