20.05.2022 We are simply old school. To us that means good quality, locally sourced products with complete transparency. We used to know our local greengrocer, our local butcher and our local baker. Toys were well loved, and passed on, as were clothes. We are slowing down and turning our attention to a simpler, more environmentally friendly way of life. 17.01.2022 Building in space for imperfection... You all know I am very authentic and show my warts and all. If I show plastic, there are usually one or two people who lik...e to chastise me, but more often, showing my realness, helps other people feel better about their own reality. Lots of you have been following my posts the past couple of days, being on a tight budget (we are at the end of our monthly pay cycle and had some car expenses). I have been ransacking the cupboards and garden and cooking loads of food from scratch. I had $100au left until next payday and I just used it up on this. Firstly I went to an independent grocer and brought everything on the right. I was stoked to find mushrooms half price and bought a large bag full. The only Australian garlic they had was the ones on the stems, they look pretty don't you think? The apples were in a discount box, I see that there is molded plastic in the bottom, but that means all these apples have this invisible plastic footprint, which is concerning. I plan to stew the apples and make vegan apple pastries, do you have suggestions for any of the other ingredients. Next stop was the supermarket, celery was on special. The pizza was half price and has a small plastic footprint. You might be shocked about the frozen raspberries, but I decided not to hide them... The reason I buy them is that my teen daughter is vegan and I need to make sure she gets as wide a range of nutrients because there is so much food she will not eat. One of her favourite things is a 'slushie' fresh bananas, frozen raspberries and a bit of water blended into a thick drink. I also allow for a couple of treats, gluten biscuits and ice-cream. I did spend $20 on meat for the meat eaters in the family, which I will separate into small portions that will last many meals. (If anyone is upset about my diet, I can supply a blog post to provide my detailed thoughts, but will not discuss it here as I don't want the topic to be side-tracked.) I have enjoyed this budget challenge so much, that I want to do it voluntarily in the future. I have proven it is possible to spend less than I usually do, but I do admit, that it does require a lot more food prep time. I have spent the past two entire mornings prepping food to keep my plastic and expenditure down. For my mental health I allow a 5-10% imperfection rate for plastic usage and for unhealthy treats. I find this much better for my quality of life rather than aiming for perfection and drowning from guilt when I fail.

04.01.2022 Business Update: Maleny Dairies previous update informed you of our attempts to support Queensland farming families that are not just based here on the Sunshine... Coast. We have the Hayden Family with us now for the Toowoomba region and the Gerber Family for Greater Brisbane. Our sales in Brisbane and the two Coasts have actually gone backwards and we encourage you all to spread the word regarding what we are about to people you know. You are our greatest ‘influencers’ and the success of what we are trying to do relies, at the end of the day, on people buying our milk. Our Toowoomba strategy has some promising news that we can report. Last week we sold 3234 litres of milk which is 234 litres more than the previous post. Furthermore Woolworths have agreed to range in our milk to all their stores in that region. It will take another month or two for the stores to range in our milk and we will let you know where and when they each start stocking our milk. This news highlights a part of our business we can share with you. 234 litres in sales doesn’t seem like much. You are right, it isn’t and our drop in sales in the past 2 weeks is 100 times worse. However our family business and what we have committed to do is a life commitment. Our next generation all want to keep the business going and they are still at school. Maleny Dairies current executive will retire through this business, so you are stuck with us boring oldies for a while yet. This means that all our business strategies are beyond the horizon and that is very important because investing in a 5 year plan and a 100 year plan are subtly very different. Of course we want to sell 500,000 litre of milk a week tomorrow and then 1,000,000 next year and going backwards 23,500 litre a week in the past two weeks is very frustrating. If it takes us 1 year or 10 or 50 to keep the Queensland Dairy Industry alive then, like you, we are all in. We will keep reporting how we are tracking with sales in the next couple of weeks.
