18.05.2022 TUIGA FAU/ TUIGA FAFAU The crowning glory of a Samoan the traditional Samoan Tuiga Fau/Samoan ceremonial headdress. We have seen through the years different variations and styles of the Tuiga, but the first known style or traditionally maded Tuiga that has survived through the centuries is the Tuiga Fau. The Tuiga Fau is made of 4/5 parts which consists of: Pou: A tight knot high bun that was secured by strips of Lauao or Siapo back in the days. The Pou is what the whole ...Tuiga Fau is constructed around. Lauao: The bleach brown kinky textured hair that is cut, teased and shaped like somewhat of a afro. Traditionally the Lauao was made up by human hair from family members this method is called Fa'atavaitui where strands of humans hair was blinded together to form the Lauao Lave: The centrepiece to the Tuiga which is construed by most commonly three wooden dowels and decorated with various shaped mirrors or sea shells. It is believe that in olden day Samoa some Tuiga’s will have three or more wooden dowels depending on there statues or chief ranking. Pale Fuiono: The crown or headband that is sits on the forehead and is secured around the head. The Pale Fuiono in olden day Samoa was decorated with fuiono shells (Nautilus Shells) but nowdays in replacement of the fuiono shells small beads, sequins and mirrors are used. Titi Ula: The final component of is the Titi Ula. This is made from red feathers of the Sega’ula (Red Parrot) and is sits on top of the framework of the Lave. Fortunately I had stumbled past some videos that shows the constitution of the Tuiga Fau both videos are from (first video) 1918 from National Anthropological Film Collection YouTube Channel and (second video) 2019 from the launch of Le Taupou Manaia Dance Academy Auckland. It is so such a blessing to know that after 101 years later one of our treasured Samoan cultural practices from yesteryears is alive and thriving. #tuiga #measinasamoa Video credits: Le Taupou Manaia Dance Academy VIDEO AAU National Anthropological Film Collection (YouTube Channel)
