The first settlers describe the area as Between Sydney Cove and Botany Bay the first space is occupied by a wood, in some par...ts a mile and a half, in others three miles across; beyond that, is a kind of heath, poor, sandy, and full of swamps 2. The first criminals Crime' became a byword for Surry Hills. Probably most famous at the turn of the century were the Larrikins. Such gangs had long been part of Surry Hill’s history, and by the 1880s Surry Hills was the centre of crime for the area of Sydney. 3. The gentrification of Surry Hills In the 80’s and 90’s Spiralling house prices allowed many previous residents to sell up and move out to less crowded suburbs. And the newcomers brought with them skills that would ultimately benefit the whole of the neighbourhood.
