24.01.2022 A CRANE’S VIEW OF UPGRADES TO KELSO STREET SEWER PUMP STATION In a major milestone for Council’s $4.3 million upgrade of all three major sewer pump stations (Dunolly, Kelso Street and Bourke Street), a 400 tonne crane has lifted the concrete lid onto the new wet well at Kelso Street this week. The project has so far seen the demolition of the building that was on the site, followed by the demolition of the slab that was underneath the building to open up the well for a good c...lean, pour in concrete to create new channels to guide flows through the well, and reline the walls to bring it back up to a 50-year life span. The massive 400 tonne crane stopped traffic on Tuesday, after the new lid was precast onsite. With openings in the lid, it now provides safe access to get into the wet well to complete the rest of the works which include installing new pipes and pumps. Sewer pump stations are important because they take all the gravity-fed sewer from the houses around it to a low point and pump it through to the sewer treatment plant. The Kelso Street sewer pump station services about one-third of downtown Singleton. A smaller upstream pump station also pumps into the Kelso Street network. The Major Sewer Pump Stations upgrades project is a response to ageing infrastructure that posed risks to safety. Further efficiencies have also been created with the transformation of the Kelso and Bourke streets pump stations from dry wells to wet wells, meaning the pumps are fully submersible to provide additional capacity to cater for residential growth and in times of emergency. Dunolly sewer pump station is almost complete, and the Kelso Street pump station is expected to be back in normal operation before Christmas. Work on the Bourke Street pump station is also underway, with pits poured and trenching complete. In the new year the network will bypass the pump station to allow for new pipe work and a repeat of the Kelso Street project to demolish the building, precast a slab, put it on, and clean the wells.

23.01.2022 MAYOR REPEATS CALLS FOR A BETTER SINGLETON BYPASS OF THE NEW ENGLAND HIGHWAY TO AVOID "BITTERSWEET" OUTCOME Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore has again called on the NSW Government to reconsider its plans for the Singleton bypass of the New England Highway and include a dual carriageway as well as a full interchange at Putty Road. She had already written to the to the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole this week to request a meeting as soon as possible, ahead... of comments by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack, Federal Member for New England Barnaby Joyce and Mr Toole in a statement today that the project was pushing ahead. With $560 million committed by the Australian Government last year, Mr Joyce said the bypass would be designed to cater for a later upgrade to a dual carriageway where required to meet future traffic demands. Cr Moore said she was committed to ensuring the best outcome for the people of Singleton and the people who drove through the local government area every day. The Australian and NSW governments say they are now seeking industry feedback on the best way to deliver the bypass, and what we’re hearing from our community and from the motorists who’ll be using the road is to make it dual lanes with a full interchange, she said. We also need to listen to the delivery truck drivers and the other motorists who service the Town Centre to understand what their needs are, and which way they need to get onto John Street. I’ve said repeatedly that I am whole-heartedly supportive of the concept of the Singleton bypass and the importance of this vital piece of infrastructure to our community, but we only get one chance to get it right. Cr Moore said she was thrilled with the commitment to start work on the project as soon as possible, but disappointed the design didn’t go far enough to plan for the community’s needs now and into the future. After years of lobbying, we don’t want the Singleton bypass of the New England Highway to become a bittersweet project, she said. We should be learning from the Hunter Expressway and the fortitude that was shown for the Branxton interchange to accommodate the future development at Huntlee, as well as the work of the local community to entice people to stop in Branxton from both directions. We have the opportunity to plan for the long-term, to provide the best possible outcome for our community. I don’t want the people of Singleton to come this far, only to be in the position of having to lobby for more money later on to address issues we’re raising now. . . . 17.01.2022 SPIRIT OF SINGLETON | JANE FARRELLY Australia Day might look a little different for most of us this year, but Jane Farrelly will continue her own tradition of playing at the official ceremony at the Civic Centre with the Singleton Town Band next Tuesday. Although this year, she will take up her instrument as the Musical Director of Intermediate Singleton Town Band and the event will be livestreamed via Council’s website and Facebook page. Singleton-born Jane is one of the ban...d’s talented flautists, but also plays the piano, guitar, ukulele and violin. She took up a music stand with Australia’s continuously playing town band seven years ago as a 12-year-old. I started because I knew the previous Intermediate Band Director from church and she nagged me and nagged me that I should come, so I finally did and it’s really cool, Jane said. Over the years I had a lot of music lessons that I often outgrew, and then joining the band was like having a full group of teachers whether it was other people in the flute section, or learning from the directors, especially when I joined senior band and learning from more advanced players and playing challenging music that I wouldn’t have tackled on my own. Jane’s Australia Day usually begins with the barbecue breakfast served up as part of Singleton’s community celebrations, but COVID-19 restrictions will not deter from the spirit of the day. It’s special because it’s about who we are and where we live, she said. As a band we’re all united by our mutual love for music, and then as Australians we’re all unified by our mutual love of Australia. So in very, very different ways to me, Australia Day is a little bit of that. It comes with the same feeling as marching on Anzac Day it’s a huge honour and it’s a privilege to do it with a bunch of musicians like the Singleton Town Band. Tune into the livestream of the Australia Day 2021 ceremony on Facebook @SingletonCouncil or Council’s website at singleton.nsw.gov.au/australiadaylive on Tuesday at 9.30am plus share how you're spending Australia Day using #SpiritofSingleton to Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win one of 25 $50 Spend in Singleton gift cards! #SpiritofSingleton #AustraliaDay #AustraliaDay2021 #singletonnsw #SingletonHunterValley

Our relationship with Cycling NSW began last year, helping to enhance Singleton as an adventure and recreation destination and highlighting all the reasons anyone would want to visit not least ...amazing natural attractions and world-class food and wine to an even wider market. And despite the threats that hung over this year’s events, it’s fantastic to see our association with Cycling NSW continue with about 250 riders expected to head our way over the course of the weekend. Even better, they’ll be getting out of town with the rides taking place around Glendon Hall and Broke as we showcase the length and breadth of our local government area to a whole new audience and enticing them not only to come back, but to bring their friends and family. As well as tourism, Council is actively looking at how we can diversify and build on all industries across our LGA including the future of energy. Last week I was invited to address a public hearing in relation to the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Planning enquiry into the sustainability of energy supply and resources in NSW. Council’s submission to the enquiry reaffirmed Singleton’s importance as one of the most important mining centres in NSW and the significance of the coal mining industry to our local economy. That’s why we have taken a proactive socio-economic position that also includes the potential for renewable energy production facilities in appropriate locations. What we need, and why we are appealing for NSW Government assistance, is to identify industry diversification opportunities, avoid land use conflicts, investigate emerging opportunities and develop strategic long-term post mining land use outcomes to help ensure Singleton continues to be an important economic centre for NSW. With the potential for more events like Cycling NSW’s Masters Road Championships, and as more people discover that our region has so much more to offer beyond mining, there’s plenty of energy for a bright future for Singleton regardless of the source. 02.01.2022 SPIRIT OF SINGLETON | DAVID WILLIAMS Having seen how Australia Day has changed in my time, David Williams says what best captures the significance of the day is the smiles on the faces of people in the Citizenship ceremony. The people who are naturalised on the day and the pleasure you see from the smiles on their faces, having been welcomed to this country, I think is enough in itself and sums it all up, he said. The long-time community stalwart and member of the Singlet...on Australia Day Committee, who joined an elite list with an OAM in the Australia Day Honours in 2015, reflected on the culture of opportunity and respect that will be celebrated on Australia Day on Tuesday. I can remember in the early 50s when the Greta camp was there. I went to school with children who had little English if any at all, didn’t have uniform to wear and wore their national costume from the country they came from. I’ve kept in contact with some of those people over the years, and I look back now at what they’ve achieved in this new country, he said. Then we saw how the bushfires and the drought impacted our community, and how we responded by helping each other not only in Singleton, but by going to other areas throughout the State and interstate. And now we’ve had the virus and I think Singleton has been very lucky because people respect each other. It’s having respect for each other whether it’s where we’ve come from or the circumstances we’re in, it doesn’t matter. We’re all Australians, and it doesn’t matter where we came from or what we did, we’re all one. Tune into the livestream of the Australia Day 2021 ceremony on Facebook @SingletonCouncil on Tuesday at 9.30am plus share how you're spending Australia Day using #SpiritofSingleton to Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win one of 25 $50 Spend in Singleton gift cards! #SpiritofSingleton #AustraliaDay #AustraliaDay2021 #singletonnsw #SingletonHunterValley
