24.01.2022 "I’m up and down, but I do the best I can and maybe showing the mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers how to, not understand, but how to walk and live with shame and guilt and the stigma that addiction can bring into a family, if we can put it out in front and go, ‘Wow, this is a really big problem and there aren’t any easy answers. And let’s all come together and put some light on this.'" Singer Melissa Etheridge, who has opened up about her son’s addiction and death to try and break down some of the stigma surrounding youth addiction.

24.01.2022 When you ask people the question RUOK?, don’t settle on the initial answer. Go one layer deeper and see what happens. Great article from our Deputy Chair Will Martin - it's so important to keep these important conversations authentic and ongoing!

21.01.2022 The link between early childhood trauma and the subsequent development of addiction is PROFOUND," Uniting's Dr Marianne Jauncey. Please take a moment to watch this incredibly poignant video of Dr Jauncey speaking to ABC The Drum about treatment services and breaking the stigma around addiction. We know that so many of the young people we support have experienced significant trauma and mental illness in their short lives which tragically is often then compounded by judgment and stigma. Every young person deserves a life of safety, hope and opportunity. Let’s end the judgment and work together to ensure that young people in crisis get the support they need to get well and stay well.

20.01.2022 Triple Care Farm gave Theo a safe place to call ‘home’ while he received the help he so desperately needed. Being able to leave behind the temptations of everyday life, Theo was able to face his demons and with professional support find a light at the end of the tunnel. 19.01.2022 "As a court and crime reporter I witness people coming before the court each week, and, for a majority of cases, drugs and alcohol are either contributing factors in an offence, or present in an offender's history." An interesting perspective on rehabilitation services from Australian court reporter Zaarkacha Marlan following last week's NSW budget announcement of $7.5 million funding for a long awaited drug rehabilitation service for Dubbo.

15.01.2022 Asking them to leave home doesn’t mean you have to cut them off completely, you can still have telephone conversations, you can still meet them from time to time, it’s about keeping the connection going. Family Drug Support Australia chief executive, Tony Trimingham

14.01.2022 "I was still going to my new job; I was getting home safely, and I was having normal conversations with friends and colleagues. No one suspected that every time I went out for a coffee break, I would have a drink instead." Make sure you tune into SBS tonight at 8.30 (or SBS on Demand) for the start of Addicted Australia - an important 4-part series that delves into the complexities of addiction and recovery.

Meet Hugo, the courageous young man featured in our Christmas Appeal, whose story offers hope to other young people living with mental illness and addiction.
