24.01.2022 As if 2020 hasn’t been tough enough. After a seventeen year wait, suspended in the no mans land that is osteopenia, today my latest bone scan confirms I officially have osteoporosis. I am 52. Sometime I am allowed to believe my cancer experience is well in the past. But my body is reminding more and more of the legacy of the choices we made to get rid of it. I am cured of cancer. But the side-effects and changes to my body because of treatment, namely chemotherapy, are life-i...mpacting, and life-long. I’m so grateful to be a survivor of an illness which impacts so many of us, and those we love. Days like today remind me of what I’ve been through, of choices I made, and the things which are out of my control. I am not ready to be a woman with osteoporosis, to limit my behaviors because of the damage I might do to myself, or other might do to me. The ground, and cars frighten me most. The latter, because it’s hard when you fall on it, and cars, because they tend to crumple up in an accident, as do ladies with osteoporosis. I mean, really though, so fucking what? Has anything really changed? No, but a milestone for me has been reached. The blissful ignorance of osteopenia is now over. I’ve come to the place I only ever thought of in the future sense. That time when it all starts to catch up. The time we talked about as one day or sometime in the future when the piper of chemotherapy must be paid. But there’s a price for everything we do to rid ourselves of that which harms us, to heal, to survive. This is the fourth time I’ve broken these poor little honeycombed ribs in fifteen years. Each time, bone scans have shown I’ve held my ground. But those twenty odd years I aged physically in chemo are beginning to make themselves known. Ironically, people tell me every day I must be aging backwards, because I apparently look much younger than 52. To those people, I thank you. I agree, and now please hold my pills and water while I give my bones a good stern talking to. Get with the fucking program, bitches, we have work to do See more
