25.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Just letting you know that there is a new round of RANSOM WARE emails currently propagating around Australia. These emails are variations on the "Australia Post" theme and the "Attached document" theme. Both have the capacity to severely impact your business if activated.... As a general rule I advise: Not to enter Captcha codes to any postal tracking site Not to open invoice / refund attachments from email (Cryptowall) The emails may look similar to the attached images: Please pass onto all relevant staff members, family and friends as you feel appropriate. While it is also good policy to ensure that your AV and mail scanning software is up to date, most consumer grade AV protection will not be able to prevent or clean up the infections in these emails. Therefore the best policy is prevention through education and not opening the emails at all! 24.01.2022 As if to exemplify our recent post, we have just been delivered a PC that has been encrypted by ransomware. It is not recoverable. It will need to be rebuilt from scratch with total loss of data on the device. We also need to go through the whole network and make sure that the ransomware has not encrypted other devices and data storage then run a deep inspection in case the offending malware is anywhere else on the network. ... There is even a risk that their existing backups may be encrypted. Not even including time lost for the client and the cost of having to recreate any data on the device, the cost of recovery and cleanup is going to be MORE than the yearly cost of one of our business continuity devices. If this machine had been protected, we would have have it restored back to to a clean state in less than 30 minutes. Business Continuity folks. Every business has to give this serious consideration. 23.01.2022 Great to see the uptake of the following security enhancements across our client base: - Dedicated firewall devices - Implementing 2 factor authentication on Office 365 - Business grade routers (no, not your Telstra router) that support secure remote access to the business network - Moving from basic backup systems to a Business Continuity model for rapid recovery in the event of a disaster... There is still work to be done across the small business sector however as even today a large, local business had their email hacked (no 2FA in place) and another new client that I visited hadnt had a backup for over 12 months (they assumed it was working). 20.01.2022 Spent a day at the local High School Careers Day. Was great to talk to the students about potential career options in the field of Information Technoloy. Emerald State High School We had a pretty ARGB setup which attracted much attention but the fun part was infecting a virtual PC with WannaCry ransomware then recovering that same virtual in under 5 minutes with our Datto SIRIS unit. We had students and teachers watching with interest.... The face tracking camera messed with a few minds and many were impressed by the 32 curved monitor. A big thanks to i-Lan Technologies and Draytek Australia for the giveaways. The kids loved the printed product folder especially when they realized that they could keep them! We are no longer recommending data backup.... Let me explain At the start of last year we began the search for a system that would not only "backup" data but ensure that our clients would experience minimal if any downtime and be able to continue working during the disaster recovery process.
