18.01.2022 This is a very interesting article and is about something that has long been discussed in the Frenchie world. Occasionally you will have a dog who's DNA says they have one copy of DM. (Note that only having one copy means they will not be affected any way - you would have to put two DM carriers together and THEN you MIGHT have 0NE in four affected puppies ( not that you want any) IF it really is a "thing" we need to guard against in our breed. One reason why we dna test - i...n any species (horses, cats, cows, dogs) - is to insure we do NOT accidentally breed a carrier to a carrier and risk producing affected progeny. So, in MOST cases, as long as your dog only carries one copy of something, it will notbe affected and it will not produce that unless bred to a dog who also carris one copy. While we are on the DNA subject, there are rumours going around that merles are susceptible to all sorts of health issues including deafness and blindness. This is the case ONLY if you breed a merle to a merle (same as with some paint horses - if both sire and dam carry the lethal white gene you will lose foals) Many people may not know that you can NOT breed a merle to a merle so dna testing for merle is important if you are not sure you dog has no merle . A dog can carry one copy of merle and it not be visual so be wary of this. That is why my stud dogs do NOT carry merle so we can not accidentally breed to an outside girl who's owner may not be aware she carries merle and they are clear on everything else so they can not provide that second copy that may result in a pup being affected by the issues we test for. Hef is consistently producing healthy, true to type pups with wonderful temperaments. Born and raised in my home but plenty of room to run and grow on the farm before they find their new families.
