24.01.2022 No matter where you are, we're here for you... but it helps if we know exactly where you are first. If you call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance, the first qu...estion you are asked is "What is the address of the emergency?" In order for us to get help to you as quickly as possible, please ensure you are providing us with the correct address. Describing nearby landmarks with identifying features will help too. In the event that you don't know where you are, you can always use the First Responder app. Our app can geo-locate you and identify your latitude and longitude coordinates. You can even call Triple Zero through the app as well. Please note you will need access to 3G/4G to use this feature. Learn more about the First Responder app here: stjohnwa.com.au/online-resources/st-john-first-responder-app

24.01.2022 Is everyone doing okay? This time of year can be difficult for some, especially for those who cannot spend time with their families. Now is a good time to send ...a message to a family member or friend and ask them if they are okay. Four ways you can open up a good conversation is to: Ask, listen, encourage action and then check in. Even saying "hello!" is a great start, and it could make a difference to their day. For when conversations just become too big for family and friends, there are people out there that can help you. If you’re worried about someone and feel urgent professional support is needed, please call Lifeline WA on 13 11 14 for 24/7 crisis support.

23.01.2022 We love a feel-good story! A mature couple was travelling down south through Highbury, when suddenly their tyre blew out. They swerved the car but managed to ...pull up on the side of the road safely. Community Paramedic Shelley (pictured below) just happened to be driving past on her way to Dumbleyung when she saw the car on the side of the road. Her instincts kicked in and she pulled over to check if there was any issue. Luckily, no one was hurt except the tyre! To warn oncoming traffic, she used her beacons to alert drivers as they drove past. Luckily this accident wasn't serious but it's great to see our people stopping to help others in need, regardless if it's a medical emergency or not! Well done Shelley, we're lucky to have you! 22.01.2022 If you're thinking of spending some time down at the beach this Summer, it's good to take a mental note of your nearest BEN sign. In the event of an emergency, ...BEN signs will inform you of your exact location, which is especially helpful along some of our more remote beaches. Every second counts during an emergency, so by quoting the nearest BEN sign code when calling Triple Zero (000), our operators can accurately pinpoint your exact location.

20.01.2022 International Men's Day is not only a day of recognition, it's a day for raising awareness surrounding men's health and why we all need to talk about it more of...ten. Mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer are all important issues to tackle and the more we talk about it, the more lives can be potentially saved. Encouraging your mates to check themselves as well as asking if you're mate is doing okay, are great ways of helping initiate change. Every year at St John WA we have amazing men and women support Movember and raise thousands of dollars for men's health. Last year we raised $25,000 for Movember and had 69 people fundraising for the cause - which was a massive record for us. This year ambassadors like Ash (spotted next to our mo-bulance) are continuing the amazing work and raising awareness for the day. Others around the organisation are also doing their part and helping raise awareness amongst their friends and colleagues (great photo Mandurah depot!) If you want to learn more about how you can help raise awareness of Men's Health, click here: https://www.internationalmensday.info/ To support Movember, click here: https://au.movember.com/

17.01.2022 We couldn't help but notice that Perth roads are getting busier again. Don't even get us started on trying to merge onto Shelley Bridge... We all have place...s to go, but sometimes we need some help from the WA community. It's important to give way to emergency service vehicles when our lights and sirens are on. Here are three easy ways you can help us get to where we need to go. See more

16.01.2022 Today marks the start of National Volunteer Week 2020 and this year I would like to thank all the volunteers who make up our communities. But more specifically..., the St John volunteers who I have the pleasure to work alongside every day. Thank you for what you do, especially this year. #waveforvolunteers #NVW2020 See more

15.01.2022 How do you like your eggs in Summer? It's going to get so hot you could probably fry them on the foot path! Probably not, but our skin is pretty susceptible to ...heat-related conditions with the increase in temperature. Whether it's being mindful of sunscreen application or reducing the risk of heat stroke, there are things we can do to help ourselves. Keeping an eye on your water intake is always sensible for a start. If we may offer one more piece of advice... stop putting moisturising lotion on your sunburns! We see this too often, so please use aloe vera, cold running water or a cool towel to help cool your skin down if you're suffering from a sunburn. If you don't know how to treat a patient suffering from severe sunburns, be sure to download the St John First Responder App, so you can download our free first aid tips. You can find this in the first aid toolbox. You could even take it one step further and book yourself in for some first aid training - never a bad idea to learn how to save a life. You can learn more about the training we offer at stjohnwa.com.au/first-aid-training Stay cool, everyone .

14.01.2022 Four off-duty police officers leapt into action after a 27-year-old man collapsed at a sporting centre in Leeming. The officers were playing indoor cricket on T...hursday 18 June 2020, when another player collapsed in the net next door. Hearing calls for help Sgt Simon Bowen immediately called 000, directing centre staff to bring the defibrillator. Sgt Brad Hasson and Det Sgts Nathan Carbone and Dan Whitney commenced CPR while Sgt Bowen connected the defibrillator. In the short time it took for St John Ambulance to arrive three shocks were delivered. The man, Dane, was treated at a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He has since made a full recovery. Dane said the incident highlights the importance of effective first aid training and defibrillators. If those police officers had not been there that night, as well as a functioning defibrillator, I can safely say I might not be here today, he said. I cannot express my thanks enough.

12.01.2022 There's no such thing as a "normal" day for the folks at St John WA. No two days are the same and it's the small things that can really make a difference. Today... is Thank a Paramedic Day, and we'd like to thank all of our amazing Paramedics and Ambulance Volunteers who change lives every single day. Do you have a Paramedic you'd like to thank? Post your thank you message in the comments and we'll share it with our crews! If you happen to see an ambulance driving past today, don't be afraid to smile and say "thank you!" We'd also like to give a shout out to all the crews working hard over east. You're doing an amazing job keeping the community safe during COVID-19. Thank you for your service .

08.01.2022 We’ve all seen this guy before hanging around our roller doors and mailboxes. Red-Back spider bites can actually be dangerous for children and the elderly, so i...t’s important to know how to treat this type of bite. As Australians, we’re pretty well equipped to handle spider bites, but in case you need a refresher, here’s how you can treat a bite: Follow the DRSABCD action plan Lay the patient down, rest and reassure. Ensure you monitor their condition for any changes. Apply a cold pack or cold compression to lessen the pain for no longer than 20 minutes Seek medical aid if the person bitten is a young child or elderly, has collapsed or is suffering from severe pain. If you’ve been bitten, you may experience some unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling and profuse sweating. Try to remain calm and seek medical attention. You shouldn’t necessarily need an ambulance for a spider bite, but in severe life-threatening cases always call Triple Zero (000).

08.01.2022 Still putting butter on burns or peeing on jellyfish stings? Take this video from Nathan as a formal 'please stop doing this now' message . Here are 5 first aid myths you probably (but hopefully not) still believe!

07.01.2022 Would you know how to help someone suffering from an asthma attack? An asthma attack is a sudden worsening of asthma symptoms triggered by the tightening of mu...scles around the airways. It can be caused by (but not limited to) exercise, allergens and environmental factors. if you suspect someone is suffering from an asthma attack, sit the casualty upright and gently comfort them. Help administer 4 puffs from their inhaler. Wait 4 minutes and administer the same dosage again. If there is no relief from the inhaler, immediately call for an ambulance on Triple Zero (000). 05.01.2022 Men are statistically less likely to seek medical aid when suffering from a medical condition, both physical or mental. According to Men's Health Week, a male h...as a life expectancy of 78.0 years while females can expect to live to 82.3 years old. Men also take their own lives at 4 times the rate of women - on average, that's 5 men a day. This Men's Health Week, we want to help raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early treatment of illnesses that affect men. We all have the power to change this. Tag a mate and help us raise awareness. We thank you for supporting this initiative. More information about Men's Health Week can be found here: https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/

05.01.2022 As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate prehospital care, our Crews will be asking a...ll patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing Volunteers and our Community of the Wheatbelt against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19. When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the 000 call taker if you have flu like symptoms. When our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please don’t be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we can’t do that without our resilient and fantastic Community behind us. Stay safe! The St John Team - Wheatbelt
