25.01.2022 Communication disability affects a person’s ability to understand and be understood by others. Levels of limitation range from mild to profound and can be temporary or last a lifetime. Results from the 2015 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers provide insight into the prevalence of communication disability in Australia and the impact on the lives of those who are affected by it. The statistic that 14% of people with a communication disability needed formal assistance illustrates just how important the role of a Speech Pathologist is.

14.01.2022 What do Speech Pathologists do? Speech Pathologists study, diagnose and treat a range of communication disorders which include difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering, and using voice. They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of developmental delays, stroke, brain injuries, learning disability, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other problems that can affect speech and language. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a Speech Pathologist. If you have a friend or family member that may have a communication disability, there are some tips available on the Speech Pathology Australia Website: http://bit.ly/TipsforSuccessfulCommunication
