24.01.2022 With the summer now in full swing, we're all pulling out the bathers and heading to the beach! We are so lucky here in Geelong with the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast right on our doorstep. On these warmer days, most people do not think about water safety, but they should. The drowning mortality rate can be significantly reduced with some simple safety measures. Never swim alone, always buddy up, whether you are in a swimming pool or at the local beach. Swim in safe areas... when visiting rivers or at the beach. Ideally, this would be between the flags on a beach patrolled by lifeguards. If swimming at a private pool ensure there is an adult nominated to be the dedicated child supervisor. Please take care and enjoy a safe summer, but remember if you do need emergency assistance of any kind, the caring and professional Emergency Department team at St John of God Geelong Hospital are ready to provide you with the best response possible. Our Emergency Department is open 24/7.

24.01.2022 Sweet little baby Tamaya

22.01.2022 NAIDOC week is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the true history of Australia. The theme for this year’s NAIDOC week is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for over 65,000 years. We held a Welcome to Country ceremony and a Didgeridoo performance for our caregivers, and several displays were installed around the hospital for everyone to reflect on. An art exhibition featuring paintings from local Indigenous artists were the highlight of our NAIDOC Week. Always Was. Always Will Be.

07.01.2022 'Every Sunrise Brings New Hope' A wonderful art exhibition is taking place at our Hospital with artwork by local artist Deidre Carmichael. The paintings created during a time of much uncertainty in the past couple of months capture the passing of time and the enduring beauty of nature, and offer a symbol of hope. The artist shared the reassurance felt through her connection with nature and the sense of optimism given by each new sunrise. "Hope is being able to see there i...s light despite all the darkness. The dawn of a new day heralds potential and promise". Our Cartwheels Program continues to play a vital role in developing the connection between arts and wellbeing. We are certainly honoured to exhibit Deidre's artwork, and hope this brings joy to our patients who will be staying with us over the holiday season. The exhibition will be open until January 18th 2021 on Level 2 at the Wexford Gallery. To learn more about Deidre, please visit: www.deidreboeyencarmichael.com

07.01.2022 In this most unusual and difficult year we firmly believe that PANDA Week is more important than ever. With many expecting and new parents struggling due to COVID-19 and associated restrictions, it’s critical that we work together to support families facing mental health challenges at this time. Our theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. What does this mean? This year, more than ever it’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not... alone and can reach out for help. And just as importantly, they can know that when they do reach out, they will be supported by those they confide in, whether family members, health professionals, PANDA or other perinatal mental health specialists. For more information where you can get help, visit panda.org.au
