02.01.2022 October and November is the Noongar season of Kambarang, the season of birth. During this season, there’s an explosion of colour as native flowers bloom, including banksias, kangaroo paws and orchids. Koolbardies (magpies) are out guarding their nests and young, and snakes and reptiles start to wake from their hibernation and search for food. Towards the end of Kambarang, the moojar (Australian Christmas Tree) will start to flower. The bright orange display of colour is a si...gn that the heat is on its way. Traditionally, Kambarang was a time when Noongar families moved back to the coast, following the rivers. They ate gilgie (freshwater crayfish) and yakkan (turtle) on their journey. We are highlighting the seasons on the Noongar calendar as one of the ways we recognise and celebrate events of cultural significance to Noongar people.
