25.01.2022 Today is STOP Pressure Injury Day and thanks to the amazing efforts of our interdisciplinary team, St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital turned red today and teams held educational and fun activities in support of the day. Pressure injury prevention is a critical part of patient care within any hospital. With the right knowledge and care, pressure injuries can be avoided. Days such as ‘Stop Pressure Injury Day’ are important to raise awareness of pressure related injury and promote pressure injury prevention. Well done team.

22.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day - 17 November. 21.01.2022 SJG Mt Lawley Hospital offers a comprehensive range of urology services, so it is only fitting that we should shine the spotlight on November’s Men’s Health Month. Men’s Health Month is an annual event to raise awareness of men's health issues such as prostate cancer, and to encourage early detection and treatment of disease. In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men: approximately 3,500 Australian men die of prostate cancer each year. With in...creasing experience and advances in technique and equipment, prostate cancer can be diagnosed more easily and treatment outcomes are enhanced. Urologist Mr Paul McRae and Clinical Nurse Tanya Wright are standing with SJG Mt Lawley Hospital’s new transperineal ultrasound unit, used for ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies, which when examined under a microscope, will determine the presence of prostate cancer. Our team would like to send out the following message for Men’s Health Month: be active and seek medical help if you don’t feel well or you notice unusual symptoms. Talk to your partner, talk to your friends, talk to your workmates and get the help you need. For more information on St John of God’s urology services, visit https://bit.ly/370yg6Y

20.01.2022 In recognition of World Prematurity Day yesterday, 17 November 2020, St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital was lit in purple light to raise awareness of preterm birth.

15.01.2022 Today we have come together to recognise Remembrance Day and those lost during the war. Our Admissions team put together a touching commemorative display of poppies, rosemary twigs and historical records, at the main entrance for both caregivers and patients to view. As well as our public display, our Operating team also put together an amazing display on our first floor.... Thank you to both our Admissions and Operating team for bringing our hospital community together for such a worthwhile occasion.

15.01.2022 This week throughout our hospital, Manual Task Consultant Louise VanMaanen is holding a small falls prevention and falls recovery exhibition for caregivers and patients. Showcasing a range of ‘falls recovery’ options that have been designed specifically to safely pick up people from the floor, Louise will be demonstrating to caregivers how to use the equipment safely. The exhibition also focuses on promoting best practice falls prevention strategies to minimise the risk and ...impact of patient falls within our hospital environment. Thanks to Louise for putting together such an important exhibition.

14.01.2022 Congratulations to Clinical Nurse Midwife Greig Smith from the Family Birthing Unit who was the recipient of our Living Values Award for October. Greig was nominated by photographer Chris Wiegele for his exceptional compassion in very moving circumstances: "I have been taking stillbirth photos at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital for a number of years now and the team always does an amazing job supporting grieving families, but today was something else.... The way the situation was handled with such care and respect for all involved really touched me, and the attentiveness by your staff, especially Greig, really moved me. Greig's attention to every little step that was taken in the nursery and his professionalism in the way he dealt with the staff was amazing. Thank you Greig for your sensitive handling of this challenging situation and for showing such deep compassion and respect for all involved.

14.01.2022 125 year anniversary of the Sisters of St John of God arrival. On this day 125 years ago (25 November 1895) the Sisters of St John of God arrived in Perth after a 41-day journey from Wexford, Ireland. These eight pioneering women volunteered in 1895 to come to WA to provide healing and hope to the newly established colony and forever changed the healthcare landscape in Australia.... Our heritage team have put together a fantastic heritage display of records and photos relating to the Sister’s remarkable journey in our hospital’s reception foyer, for both caregivers and visitors to view. We are blessed that some of the records and photos relating to their journey remain and our Group Manager of History and Heritage, Jacqui Sherriff, is able to curate and share them with our caregivers and visitors. Australia - and how we deliver healthcare - may have changed dramatically since 1895, but the work our caregivers do every day continues the inspirational work of the Sisters of St John of God and the healing mission of Jesus. Thank you to both Jacqui and Kerrie James, Coordinator of Arts, Heritage and volunteering, for putting such a remarkable display together.
