22.01.2022 We are humbled to have another local business show support for our SJ ShareWaste Network WA community compost hub initiative based at Speedy Spanners Community Centre in Serpentine, Western Australia. #BarefootEntertainment have offered assistance by wishing to trial diverting their food waste from landfill & contributing to our community compost hub. Hopefully soon we can further help divert food prep/left overs from local #foodtruck events with Barefoot Entertainment and Ev...ents, with their first trail with some 20+ food truck vendors this weekend in Perth with the Dinner at Dusk Serpentine & Dinner at Dusk Secret Harbour. 20.01.2022 So welcome to our new members/curious folks.. How many more people have jumped in and grabbed a bucket or are depositing their kitchen 'green and 'brown' scraps/waste to our central collection point at 2426 SW Hwy Serpentine, WA? Remember if you can'tget involved in our drop off point look up the ShareWaste App and Webpage to seeing you can share your scraps or compost inputs and even excess compost you make in your local area with other keen locals. We have had people from Rockingham and Cockburn express interest in getting involved... so that's great news....

20.01.2022 Inspiration....

19.01.2022 I am popping down to Speedy Spanners Community Centre this arvo and will check on the compost food scrap donations and give the compost tubs a turn etc We are keen for more local residents to offer and drop off their chopped up kitchen scraps like veggie scraps, excess fruit and veggies including onion, citrus etc, crushed up egg shells, veggie/fruit peels also any guinea pig, rabbit, duck/chicken pen straw/waste and or chicken/duck/sheep/cow/horse manure etc, once again a dr...op off would be best suited for us.... Thanks for your interest and any offers of support... Cheers, Pete Note - file photo for effect of Ellen turning one of the compost tubs with a compost mixer

19.01.2022 We have kicked off this morning with our first bin collection :) Pop down and grab your bucket. Collections available mon-fri 8am-4pm Speedy Spanners 2426 South Western Highway, Serpentine :) ... Look forward to seeing you - Lisa :)

19.01.2022 Are there any more of our followers keen to supply their kitchen scraps to our community compost hub at 2426 SW Hwy Serpentine at Speedy Spanners Community Centre? We can provide a limited number of sealed plastic buckets to those keen to drop their scraps off once a week or so, or by all means it maybe easier if you use your own bucket etc...

17.01.2022 Maybe we should get one of these for our Serpentine ShareWaste composting project Pete Olds!

17.01.2022 Just processed another approximate 70L of waste into our compost bin today. That is approx 150L of food waste in 3 weeks which will make approx 50-60L of compost when it breaks down. Thankyou wonderful supporters for making the time to collect your foodwaste and drop it off to Speedy Spanners Community Spirit. If you want to join the Compost revolution drop in to see Lisa and register for a bucket. We are keeping a valuable resource out of landfill! Remember if you wish to get involved our group is SJ ShareWaste Network WA.

16.01.2022 Thanks Treading My Own Path for this handy tip...

15.01.2022 #foodwaste for thought... let's do what we can with the little we have left over to ensure we reduce our impact to the environment and divert it from landfill to useful compost... and let's also be mindful of other food waste streams out there.... thanks OzHarvest OzHarvest WA for the share...

15.01.2022 A bit of a catch up on processing the food waste deposits after this Tuesday Serpie Garden Group cuppa and chats at Speedy Spanners Community Centre.... We processed a 240L wheelie bin about 2/3rds full of donated compostable materials. The donations inckuded kitchen food scraps from our dedicated locals & recent trial contribution from Barefoot Entertainment and Events food trucks, along with some chicken/duck pen waste/straw bedding and spent coffee grounds from Coffee at t...he 2 Friends. It was all mixed into our kindly donated compost bins with our great source of free carbon (a truck load of donated tree lopper mulch)... We have been slowly ticking along with half dozen regular food waste donators and now onto filling our 4th 200L compost bin, so making good progress from small beginnings.... Afterwards we decommissioned the community raised garden bed due to renovations at its host location in the laneway behind Speedy Spanners . We will be setting up some more communal garden beds to share produce and herbs grown with the compost we are making from our community compost hub... Watch this page/group for upcoming working bee to help set up a more organised garden and compost space.

14.01.2022 Now here is some info on about what we are about....

14.01.2022 Why the heck hadn’t I thought of this!

14.01.2022 Who in the Serpentine, Western Australia, Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Jarrahdale, Western Australia area is able to help us with some kitchen food scraps/green waste/mulch etc for our SJ ShareWaste Network WA community compost hub initiative based at Speedy Spanners Community Centre. We would like to engage local residents, businesses and community groups to participate inndonating scraps for compost, and ideally getting involved to help make a more effective and efficie...nt community compost hub. If your business or friends can donate left over food scraps for worm farms or compost we'd love to hear from you. If you'd love to get involved and learn how to compost and reduce your waste, then this is a great opportunity. We are also keen for some use pet bedding as a carbon source for compost I.e used hay bedding and manure/sheep/cow/horse/rabbit/duck/chicken poo or even clean green lawn clippings etc... If you can deliver that would help us make the process work.. Please share/ask those who may be keen to participate, thanks... 14.01.2022 A tip for you trying composting at home. Keep a waterproof container next to your compost bin (or Worm farm) so you can add carbon matter (dead leaves, straw, woodchips, shtedded paper or newspaper) whenever you add foodscraps or greenwaste (Both nitrogen based). Keeping a balance of nitrogen and carbon keeps the microbes happy and stops acidy smells If it does smell a bit off, then you need to leave the lid off for a day, then add shredded paper or other carbon and fluff it around with a Compost corkscrew or pitchfork. The carbon soaks up the moisture and takes away the smell.

13.01.2022 Spent a bit of time tending to the public food scrap donations at Speedy Spanners Community Centre and getting some of the great mulch West Coast Tree Care dontated... with a bit of exercise and backwork we will soon have a nice mulched lay down area to reorganize the compost bins and set out some vegie beds for some autumn vegie growing hopefully with our lovely home made compost,. The aim being to help show people how a healthy garden can be set up cheaply and with little expense, from using left over or underutilized materials and spaces and some good old community spirit.... Thanks also to Speedy Spanners, Coffee at the 2 Friends, Tuesday Serpie Garden Group, Waste Is My Resource, EarthWhile Australia and our generous residents for their time and food scrap, pet bedding/manure, grass clippings and other green waste donations....

13.01.2022 For those of you trying composting at home this troubleshooting chart I made will probably help most situations. The most common problem is the compost being too wet, getting smelly and attracting vinegar flies. People underestimate the need to add carbon matter whenever they add foodscraps(nitogen content). I find the easiest thing to do is to have a container of carbon matter (dry leaves, woodchips, straw, torn newspaper, shredded newspaper) next to the compost bin then when adding the foodscraps you can reach into the carbon bin and add a similar amount. If the foodscraps are particularly gelatinous.(.ie tomatoes, squishy zucchinis!) then add more carbon. Robyn Brown from Waste Is My Resource

09.01.2022 It's great to be part of this wider community and to be able to get involved in simple grass roots activities like our SJ ShareWaste Network WA. Everyone is welcome down and join us and get involved, we'd love to meet you... no green thumbs or experts required, we talk about many things and keen to learn from others or jist have a friendly chat..... dropping in to our Tuesday Serpie Garden Group is a great way to get involved if you can, we aren't always able to make it, but check in when we can... cheers...

09.01.2022 People often ask me "How long do I wait before I use my compost? Or " Does it matter if there is still unprocessed organic matter?" I will attempt to answer both questions. The photo on the left is from a cone type bin standing on the ground that I have removed the cone from. I call it my compost cake. At the bottom you will see beautiful black worm crawling compost(similar to what is in the photo on the right), the result of about 6 weeks breaking down. The middle layer is g...oing through a transition with all kinds of compost critters attacking it so it is in a transition stage. The top layer is moist but the critters ate yet to process it. You could do a few things with the compost cake. 1) Put the cone back on and leave it another 6 -8 weeks. It will all be black and processed by then. 2) . Reposition the cone to a new spot. Shovel off the middle and top layer and place in the cone to start again exposing your "Black Gold" to use in the vege patch. 3) Dig a hole or trench for a fruit tree or veges and add the whole contents of the compost cake. The critters will continue to break down the organic matter releasing nutrients to your plant. See more

07.01.2022 A pleasant morning's activities with our informal Tuesday Serpy Garden Group. We kicked off as usual with morning tea at Coffee at the 2 Friends, tasted of some produce from our 'prototype' shared community garden bed (Looking in need of some TLC), and a book share. We finished with processing our donated kitchen scraps and an adhoc compost bay construction using discarded materials. We also discussed our pending Community Compost Sign that will go up - we are modelling on ...one kindly shared by the wonderful team at Transition Town Vincent... Our productive morning was followed by a mulch drop for our community compost hub this morning, kindly donated thanks to a generous local tree lopper..... 05.01.2022 A bit of a Plastic Free July helpful tip for an alternative liner to use in your compost bins and or your regular rubbish bins around home or work....

05.01.2022 Green waste to a better use - Our group supports the diversion of green and food waste from landfill, and it's great to see some municipalities also backing positive change like this with a green waste bin for residents...We however also believe that through connecting community members we can simply reduce such waste while building community engagement through sharing of organic waste, compost, awareness and knowledge.... We are here to advocate for initiatives like the Sh...areWaste App and the values behind it - how it brings community together through simple exchange of food scraps and reciprocity. Our group is aimed at sourcing local food scraps from residents and businesses to create a community composting hub and garden space, as a shared community engagement and awareness initiative. We also hope we can help people gain an appreciation for composting and the value of soil health.. For those who can't bring scraps to us at 2416 SW Hey Serpentine WA, we encourage the #ShareWaste App or webpage to allow you to find someone who maybe able to utilize your food waste locally.. Let's hope we see more councils embrace green waste recycling, promote and support initiatives like #ShareWaste and or #CompostRevolution and work towards reducing methane and other green house gasses from landfill or incinerators being used more positively for building community and soil through sharing and composting/worm farming etc.... 05.01.2022 We have been a bit light on hands on action processing compost etc in recent weeks and are slowing down over the silly season to take a rest... Please contact us should you have any questions or concerns.... We have 3 x 240L bins lined with mulch/shredded paper able to receive your food waste, especially from your festive get togethers etc, so happy for you to use them... Have a safe festive period...

04.01.2022 If anyone has any old fridges or freezers that don't work, ideally ones with one large door/one section, our group SJ ShareWaste Network WA would love to repurpose/reuse them as worm farms aka composters... ideally also with compressor removed...if you can drop off to serpy also preferred Please let us at SJ ShareWaste Network - WA know.... 02.01.2022 Another lovely morning of coffee, morning tea and general chats this week on Tuesday.... We shared some of Margie 's lovely green papayas, topical book and DVDs, chopped and dropped the shared community garden herb/veggie bed, talked all things soil fungi, compost tea, improving your garden beds, fruit trees and community gardens etc. We also discussed the benefits of forestry tube pots to prevent plants getting root bound and encourage deep root growth also the benefits of ...deep stem planting of woody stem natives for increased survival rates due to improved root depth, and processed some more donated food scraps for compost making as part of our SJ ShareWaste Network WA group initiative.... ** Thanks to the community members and following supporters/contributors helping to make this initiative happen with donations of time, information, material or land/space - Speedy Spanners Community Spirit EarthWhile Australia Waste Is My Resource Verge Garden Projects Australia Byford Glades Community Garden Coffee at the 2 Friends

02.01.2022 Chris and I did a bit this morning processing foodscraps at our compost station at Speedy Spanners Community Centre. Keep it coming locals....so much better than going to landfill. One bin is now full. Give that about 10 -12 weeks and we will have some black gold to give back! #wasteismyresource #sharewaste

02.01.2022 Our little Tuesday Serpie Garden Group and SJ ShareWaste Network - WA group members went along and learnt about a great example of a large scale industrial biodigester here in Perth, Western Australia at the Richgro Garden Products facility processing some 100 tonnes of diverted organic material waste per day.... There should be more encouragement from Federals, State and local governments with incentives for invest to install such facilities, to help enable smaller scale ones for business and community groups to help divert waste, power themselves, grow food and be more sustainable overall...
