22.01.2022 Lilach Mileikowski's powerful sculptural works in Encounters, Skepsi @ Whitehorse Artspace. Lilach Mileikowski ‘There is an immediate connection between social systems and personal consciousness, each structuring and being structured by the other.’ *... Working with clay is a continual dialogue with the form, exploring my ideas through construction - the process is fluid, ideas evolve. Engaging with issues of cultural place and belonging, my work embodies vulnerability and fortitude. Reflecting on the basic human need to connect, and relating to nature’s malleable way of reproduction, the form is constructed by repetitive elements. The singular is supported by the whole and the whole is united by the singular. The use of Hebrew script represents a sacred prayer for protection. As a collection of markings and spirituality it evokes ambiguity. It communicates on a personal and global level. The work awakens a conversation about people, the individuals that connect to a group and the sense of security within. *Adler, J 1981, The Meaning of Things: Domestic Symbols and the Self Encounters is currently online, due to Victorian Government Restrictions. We hope to open to the public late August. For an illustrated catalogue of the exhibition, please send us a message or email [email protected] www.skepsigallery.com.au

22.01.2022 Connie Augoustinos Soft and wobbly, safe at home vessel, 2020, hand built stoneware, porcelain slip, matte glaze. 'These works were made in my home studio during the COVID-19 quarantine and on-going crisis. While they are not a direct response to the pandemic, they offered me great solace in a time of profound uncertainty; as such I consider them to be symbolic of this moment and our current circumstances. They invoke concepts of home, and the temporality of the home, in wh...ich we slow down, go back to basics. Leaning into the everyday domestic, this body of work continues my exploration of form and objects suggestive of earlier times. Succumbing to the type of clay at hand, the rhythm of my fingers making-marks records time and alludes patience that comes from making slowly and intuitively.' Close observation of the shoreline, the forest and the creatures that live there has given rise to the shapes and surfaces of these vessels.... During the complex ceramic processes, the forms are distilled or amplified to work in accord with the practical demands of making objects for use in everyday life. There is a delicate balance between the considerations of art, craft and design in each vessel. The sculptural relationships that exist between the individual objects when they are grouped together provide an opportunity for the utilitarian to transcend function and enable complex visual rhythms to develop.' 19.01.2022 Stunning work by Susan Frost, porcelain vessels with relief detail, in Encounters, Skepsi @ Whitehorse. Now online. Susan Frost "Colour is integral to my work. Minimalist forms allow me to explore the interrelationships of mood by placing series of colours closely together. The placement and proportions of the chosen objects enable colours to reflect and bounce off each other encouraging unexpected and exciting interactions to occur.... Decoration, inspired by architectural adornment is layered and etched into the surface of the wheel thrown vessels. Geometric in nature they are meticulously placed so they flow continuously around the form. The materiality of the porcelain is exploited through long, hot firings. The vessel moves and shrinks as it reaches vitrification achieving strength and translucency. The melting glaze breaks on the edges of the decoration and pools in its recesses creating tonal contrasts." 08.01.2022 ENCOUNTERS SKEPSI @ WHITEHORSE Tessa Wallis We’re all in this Together, 2020... porcelain, glaze, H26 x W30cm 'As I am interested in allegory, history and politics, I enjoyed interpreting the havoc caused by the corona virus in this work. A Chinese dragon figurehead and the emblems of nine countries affected by Covid-19 illustrated in low relief on its sides, this vessel is symbolic of the world wide, 2020 pandemic. A moose represents Sweden, a wolf Italy, a lion England, a rooster France, a crescent moon and star Turkey, a kangaroo Australia, a bull Spain, an eagle Germany and the emblem of Iran. An American eagle flies in the opposite direction while the vessel is tossed by waves. The virus is spreading far and wide as if on the infected tentacles of a giant squid and a large skull in low relief, is a grim reminder of the drastic consequences of Covid-19.'
