16.01.2022 This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are prewriting patterns, with the average (not prescribed) age at which child...ren are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as visual motor integration. Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better. 16.01.2022 Making the most of the sunshine before the rains tomorrow......what are you playing outside today??

15.01.2022 We LOVE our educators and creating a team is important to us here at SKFDC, even though our educators are spread all over the Illawarra, we make a real effort to ensure a collaborative approach to care (even through a global pandemic!) Here’s a testimonial from one of our lovely educators; "I really appreciate how you both run the scheme (Such as our sweet thank you gifts) and with a strong team emphasis that we are all in it together." - Kate.

15.01.2022 Who's doing the bird count...a fun easy experience with the kids...

14.01.2022 Its all about birds at nyssa's FDC this fortnight and concluding with AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT on thursday!

14.01.2022 Children make play look so easy and simple! But take the time to carefully observe them while playing and you’ll see the complex world of play. According to sci...entists, the neural connections of children’s brains change when they are playing. Different parts of the brain are activated as children develop their cognitive, language, physical, social and emotional skills. And more often than not, this happens simultaneously! (The brain is amazing! ) Let’s take block play as an example. When children play with wooden blocks, their brain activity lights up as they learn about: multiple math concepts (numbers, counting, sorting, geometry) multiple science concepts (balance, trial and error, observation) spatial skills (maneuvering their body in the space they’re working on) persistence and determination (focusing and trying hard in spite of difficulty) handling frustrations (What do I do if my building falls down?) safety (How do I keep my body safe while playing with wooden blocks?) how to use past experiences and knowledge to enrich play (What do I know about blocks?) new vocabulary (structure, balance, symmetry, base) self-direction (What do I want to build? How will I build it?) problem-solving (What do I do if the shape I want is not available?) engineering (How do I use these blocks to make my structure?) recreating real-life things or experiences using blocks working with other people (cooperation, taking turns, respecting boundaries) physical skills (hand-eye coordination, dexterity, lifting and moving blocks) and so much more! Children learn best when they play. As #LRKnost puts it, For a child, it is in the simplicity of play that the complexity of life is sorted like puzzle pieces joined together to make sense of the world. Do you have a memorable play moment with your little humans? Share your story or a picture below! #kindlittlehumansph #play #playmatters #playislearning #blockplay #blockbuilding

11.01.2022 Billy's tip of the week! The year leading up to starting school is an important time for children to start developing their social and emotional skills. Buildin...g friendships with others is a huge part of the school readiness journey. Social skills that will assist your child in settling into the school environment include: Socialising with other children Sharing and taking turns Playing group games Using basic problem solving strategies Following rules and instructions Learning strategies for conflict resolution Encouraging your child to have play dates with others will support and enhance their social skills needed for transitioning to school.
