ANSWER: During the 1963 All-Japan cha...mpionships Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi and Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa were both ringside and witness Keinosuke Enoeda Throw his opponent and the opponent laid motionless and suffered a broken neck. So JKA changed the rules and did not allow hip or over shoulder throwing techniques for decades after.. Enoedas opponent and 2-3 other JKA members whom were paralyzed by kumite throws , in wheelchairs come to the All-Japan Championships tournaments every year that JKA holds them back in the 1960's,70's. These are the type of knowledge only the great Shotokan instructors can relay to students and the reasons "WHY" great shotokan instructors and history of Shotokan is so invaluable to Karate-do.
