22.01.2022 Dear Ski Aspen friends and family, I hope you are all doing well in this difficult climate. I’ve been putting off reaching out to everyone because I’ve still been hoping, working on and exploring potential options and scenarios that might enable us to run.... It takes a fair bit for me to put my hands in the air and surrender but I hit that point late last week. So this email is to advise that short of a miracle happening, we won’t be operating Ski Aspen in 2021. The main reasons for this being: 1. No travel insurance against COVID-19 for the USA 2. The Australian Government has all but ruled out international travel for at least 12 months 3. COVID-19 appears light years away from being under control in the USA I could list plenty more reasons too, most of which I’m sure you’re all well aware of. I felt I needed to put this out now because you all need to be able to plan your travel adventures for 2021 - as best you can right now - knowing that Ski Aspen isn’t an option. I had a long chat with Casey yesterday and we are all (Ski Aspen and The Aspen Skiing Company) committed to an exciting 2022 season. As are our friends at The Gant. Surely we’ll be good to go by then!? The incredible loyalty you have all shown to Ski Aspen over the years is truly humbling and I can’t thank you all enough. We will be back. Nick

06.01.2022 VALE Laurie Cleland I was very saddened to receive the news that one of Ski Aspen's favourite sons - Laurie Cleland - passed away on Saturday morning. Laurie was suffering with dementia and has been cared for by his wife Jill over the past 3 years. Laurie was a very strong skier and even in his 70s would be trying to set the pace in the "fast" group. I've lost count how many crashes, tumbles and spills I've seen Laurie take over the years. Some resulted in stitches but fort...unately, most didn't. In his final years of skiing with us, Laurie would fall over more and more frequently - especially after the lunch break. This resulted in Simon Brand implementing the Laurie Cleland falling rule. "3 falls after lunch Laurie and it's time to call it quits for the day." Laurie wasn't a fan of this rule but accepted it with grace. Jill was very happy to see the Laurie rule applied when necessary. I was also fortunate enough to have Laurie join me on 2 expeditions in Nepal. He warmed up with a trek to Everest Base Camp then told me he was ready to try something higher. The following year saw him successfully climb Mera Peak in Nepal at the ripe old age of 69. At 6476m, Mera Peak is a solid undertaking for the fittest of people and many choose to bail out when it starts getting hard. But not Laurie. I am honoured to have so many fond memories of you Laurie. You were a great man and your Ski Aspen (and Nepal!) families will miss you very much. Nick
