This year due to Covid-19 the official 30th running of the race has been postponed but, it can be done as a virtual race. You can participate from anywhere in the world and choose your type of activity to do it, such as skiking. Please join us. See https://hoppet.com.au/ and register for only $10AUD at https://www.alpinetiming.com.au/registrations/rg135/ #kangaroohoppet If you have already entered under a different activity type, you can change it to skiking via the link provided in your registration confirmation email.

25.01.2022 Meg is a former cross country ski racer from country Victoria who is keen to train off snow on local trails. She perceived and likes the possibility of being joined on outings by her family. Both Meg and her daughter readily took to skikes when they tried them for the first time on Sunday afternoon. They went home as new owners of a set of v07 PLUS that the family can now use. Welcome to our Aussie Skike Force.

24.01.2022 Nel and Ray enjoy doing lots of walking but when they saw us training on skikes, they thought that the whole body actions (especially upper body involvement) of skiking might add very nicely to their exercise regime. They had a beginner try and ski skate instruction session with us and on Friday Nel collected her new equipment, including v7 PLUS PRO skikes. Ray is planning to also get some skikes so that they can go skiking together. We welcome them to our "Skike Force"

24.01.2022 A lot of people have seen us out on the trails in recent times and have enquired about trying skiking. Craig is a cross country skier who has done lots of skating. So it was no surprise he was quick to learn skiking. He now has joined us with a new set of v7 PLUS PRO skikes that he took home after his beginner try and ski skate instruction session last Friday. We welcome him to our "Skike Force".

24.01.2022 Last Saturday Andrew and Liz had a first try of skiking in Melbourne and had lots of fun whilst learning new skills. They went home with a new set of equipment and are coming back for some further lessons. Welcome to our Aussie Skike Force.

24.01.2022 During August we met Philip and his family on snow at Falls Creek. They had started skating and had a lesson. Last week Philip and the children traveled from Castlemaine to Melbourne to have a beginner skike and ski skating instruction session with us. Experienced skiker Steve had just finished his training session so he stayed to help out with the family session (thanks Steve). The twin boys 11 yo Merv and Monty were comfortable on skikes straight away. It was a very enjoyable session and there is now another family having fun skiking together.

23.01.2022 Last Saturday and Wednesday this week groups of us have tried some new skiking circuits that have combined creek, river and freeway trails in Melbourne. The circuit on Saturday combined the Darebin creek and Merri creek trails (both running north-south) which we linked together via the Yarra river trail (at the south end) and Western ring road trail (at the north end). We traveled 48 km. On Wednesday (Anzac day public holiday) the circuit was similar, with the Plenty river trail being covered instead of the Merri creek trail. That journey was 41 km but was harder because it had more hills. These trails are picturesque which made them enjoyable to do and, are mostly relatively flat.

23.01.2022 There is a sculptors studio that we often pass when skiking along Main Rd Eltham through to Research in Melbourne. On Tuesday we stopped and took a few photos of some of the highly skilled works. See also https://www.3aw.com.au/photos-chainsaw-artist-honours-war-/

23.01.2022 This morning (Saturday 28 April) six of us did our normal 42 km circuit and we all finished pleased with our effort. A good pace was kept as we pushed each other all the way. We got around in under 3 hrs and had only 2 short breaks for a drink, snack and photo. The clockwise circuit starts in Westerfolds Park Templestowe (Melbourne), travels east up the Main Yarra River trail to the Mullum Mullum Creek trail which is followed until Park Road Donvale, then up Park Rd (heading south) to the Eastern Freeway, then west along the Freeway trail which becomes the Koonung Creek trail, then at Burke Rd cross back over the Yarra River to follow the Main Yarra trail north up through Heidelberg and east back to Templestowe.

22.01.2022 Last Saturday many Aussie skikers participated in the Australian Kangaroo Hoppet international cross country ski race at Falls Creek Victoria. There was some wonderful successes, including many age group winners. This coming Saturday 1 September there will be at least 22 Aussie skikers and family members participating in another World Loppet race, the New Zealand Merino Muster at the Snow Farm Cardrona. Go Aussie skikers! http://merinomuster.com/

22.01.2022 Covid-19 restrictions eased a little so we could have more than 2 of us out skiking together and, it was a beautiful Autumn day on Thursday. We did the 35km loop of Templestowe-Yarra River trail to Eltham-Diamond Creek trail to the Research aqueduct, on to Diamond Creek township and return. As per usual the Research aqueduct was lots of pleasure with the sun filtering through between the trees and the orange pine needles on the trail. Pictures here are of the Diamond Creek trail.

22.01.2022 Experienced skiker/xc skier, elite athlete and young mother, Robyn has been training on the Lilydale-Warbuton (Yarra Valley) rail trail preparing for the now ca...ncelled 2020 Kangaroo Hoppet. She joined us yesterday for the Saturday morning group skike from Templestowe. Despite being her first time traveling more than 30km on skikes, she comfortably completed the 42km circuit of the Yarra River-Mullum Mullum Creek-Park Rd- Eastlink-Yarra River trails and kept a very good pace throughout the whole journey. We enjoyed her company and are looking forward to her joining us again. See more

22.01.2022 Roos grazing beside the Western Ringroad trail were happy to let us get close when we were skiking on Wednesday afternoon.

22.01.2022 Nick discovered skiking and perceived it to be a fun new way to get fit. He tried skiking for the first time today and his abilities as a downhill skier showed through. He was doing really well pretty much straight away and he was comfortable on the bush tracks.

22.01.2022 Happy New Year 2019

21.01.2022 Last Thursday Tanja drove down from Kyneton to Melbourne with her lovely family to have a beginner skike session. She had not cross country skied for 20 years but she took like a duck to water when ski skating on skikes. There is now another new skiker having lost of fun on the trails around Kyneton

21.01.2022 Went exploring yesterday afternoon on part of a new trail circuit we are intending to skike in Melbourne. This part was on the northern sections for the Merri Creek trail from Mahoneys Rd Fawkner to Normanby Ave/Moreland Rd Brunswick East/Thornbury. Very enjoyable and picturesque in the late afternoon Autumn sunshine.

20.01.2022 SSD - skikers "social distancing". Great group skike this morning on a Melbourne 35km circuit Templestowe-Eltham-Research-Diamond Creek and back. Eight skikers moving quickly overall for a total 2hr 31min moving time. Very enjoyable.

20.01.2022 With Covid restrictions lifted in Melbourne we have been able to get together skiking as a group again. Yesterday morning was a very enjoyable 43 km circuit skike on the Koonung Creek, Mullum Creek and Yarra River and Eastern Freeway trails.

20.01.2022 Skiker Kevin Tory has advised that a rescheduled Bullfight Charge cross country ski race will take place this Sunday 18 August starting on the ski school area at Lake Mountain ski resort in Victoria. Registration from 8 am in the Snowsports Centre. Race start at 11 am. Likely to be three race distances 15km 10km and 5 km. Registration free and prizes are on offer for all distances.

19.01.2022 Skiking on a section of the Plenty River trail.

18.01.2022 We have had some wonderful Spring group skikes over the past month or so. One of our new skikers (Bruce) has joined us on our longer skikes out of the park for the last 2 weeks and he has done very well. Yesterday he did the 30km trip from Westerfolds Park Templestowe to the scenic Research Aqueduct and back, returning via the very pleasant Plenty River trail through Eltham.

18.01.2022 Last Sunday (5 May) the Victorian Roller Ski and Skike Championships were held at Lake Mountain. The winner of the 10 km race was skiker Kevin Tory who finished almost 3 mins ahead of talented junior roller skier Jayden Spring (2nd place overall).

18.01.2022 We have had some lovely sunny Autumn days skiking over the last couple of weeks. The colours were beautiful in the trees on the lower sections of the Mt Donna Buang Rd last Sunday. It was also lovely up on the Research aqueduct trail on Wednesday mornings. On the last few Saturday mornings we have skiked the Yarra River and Mullum Mullum Creek trails to Park Road.

17.01.2022 Our midweek group skikes have restarted in Melbourne. Hughes has rejoined us. He is training to participate in Masters ski orienteering events in Sweden in March. Our first midweek trip after winter was on the Yarra and Ruffey Creek trails out to do circuits of Ruffey Lake Park and back.

17.01.2022 Markus had a special birthday last week and his family purchased some skike equipment for him including a set of v9 FIRE 150 skikes. They started with a beginner skike and ski skate lesson for Markus and wife Kathy, which was watched and photographed by their daughters. They progressed very well as first time skikers. We are loving the v9 FIRE 150 skikes and beginners are finding it easier to start on them.

17.01.2022 First group skike of 2021 yesterday morning. We stayed in the park as Kevin suggested that we do circuits of his 4.6km loop that he had intended to do 9 times for his 2020 42km Virtual Kangaroo Hoppet. Luke and Kevin ended up doing 42km yesterday but only half of that on the loop.

17.01.2022 Mates had another midweek skike together yesterday on a beautiful sunny and crisp winter's morning. Merv has previously named these sessions as our "Men's Shed".

17.01.2022 Getting to play in the mud. As beginner skiker Emma was willing to find out, if you have sufficient momentum, skikes will travel over a wide range of surfaces.

16.01.2022 Emma noticed us out skiking and searched online to learn that we were on skikes and how to contact Skike Australia http://www.skike.com.au/contact-us.html . She was very keen to try and so we arranged that for her. 10 yo son Jackson also decided he would have a try. 2 1/2 yo brother Ethan was just as keen to have a short scooter on one skike, with help from dad Nigel. Just as other beginner skikers have commented, Emma was impressed with how much lighter the v9 FIRE 150 skikes felt when she swapped from riding v07 PLUS to the v9s. The lifting heel does make a difference to the feel.

16.01.2022 At the Victorian Roller Ski and Skike Championships at Lake Mountain there was a very good participation by 18 skikers plus their family and friends, some of whom traveled from Country Victoria. Kevin Tory was again the first skier over the finish line. Oja traveled down from Daylesford and was the first female on skikes over the line. Thank you for your support of the event and thanks to the Lake Mountain management team for running it.

15.01.2022 Alex has never done any skating or skiing but he discovered skikes. He recognised the many benefits skiking offers, including fun, relatively low cost whole body exercise fitness, being able to go on and off track without fear of sticks and stones, having good brakes and, impact cushioning of pneumatic wheels. On Monday he had a beginner skike and ski skate instruction session with us. We have now welcomed him to our Aussie Skike Force and are encouraging him to train with us and plan to use his new skills on snow next winter.

15.01.2022 Hey Skikers, This looks like a fantastic event, this Sunday 22 July. The snow is great too. Don't miss it! https://www.facebook.com/lakemountainalpineresort/posts/10155884796486799

14.01.2022 Dave wants to enjoy the rail trails in country Victoria. Last Friday he and daughter Kate drove to Melbourne to try skiking and have a beginner ski skate instruction with us. It was a pleasure to meet them and get onto the trails, despite some rain arriving near the end of the session.

14.01.2022 Liz and her boys had a great winter ski skating. She has set her sights on preparing for next Winter's 21km Australian Birkeibeiner cross country ski race. She intends using skiking to help her prepare. On Monday she tried skiking for the first time and was very comfortable on the skikes straight away.

13.01.2022 The main trails now have good snow cover so it is looking good for 2 enjoyable days of Cross Country ski racing at Falls this weekend with the Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour on Saturday 13 July and the YMCA Howmans Gap Victorian Relays on Sunday 14 July.

13.01.2022 Skiker John has been exploring Victorian regional trails over the past week. He skiked the Everton-Beechworth rail trail (i.e. a disused railway line been converted to a bike/walking trail) which has an even gradient for its full 16km length, providing a climb of about 320m. It is a good work-out, but not excessively steep. John says that is great because after you have replenished your energy (with food and a double shot coffee), you can turn around and enjoy an exhilarating cruise all the way back without having to apply any braking. It is a very pretty route, with deep cuttings and high embankments through a forest environment. Beechworth has plenty of good eateries and cafes, so there is good coffee to reward your efforts. Attached are a couple of John's pictures.

13.01.2022 Just before we came out of many months of Covid-19 2nd wave hard lockdown in Melbourne, the following nice colorful chalk message was written on one of the creek concrete paths that we are using for skiking: "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass - it is about learning to dance in the rain." Hope this helps our friends around the world who are currently in lockdown.

13.01.2022 John was in Shepparton during the past week and skiked around the shared walking-bike trails which he says have a nice environment for skiking. The trails meander through red gum forests, following the Goulburn and Broken Rivers. John estimates 15-20km of trails. The terrain is dead flat. Plenty of kangaroos early in the morning and lots of bird-life. The trails have good bridges across the creeks and floodways, and an excellent suspension bridge over the Goulburn River for the leg to Mooroopna. John's pictures and map are included here.

13.01.2022 The Melbourne Saturday morning training group has managed to just miss the forecast showers for the last few weeks but today had a heavy rain forecast. So Andrew found another way to go skike "training".

12.01.2022 Elisse is a skiker in Melbourne where Covid-19 restrictions is limiting exercise to 1hr per day. She is well on her way to completing a 42 km Vitrual Kangaroo Hoppet (Australias international cross country ski race which is available until 30 August). Elisse hopes to inspire others to join in. "The Hoppet is pretty accessible this year given we can only do an hour skike each day and break it up over 2 weeks, so I would hope most skikers can take part. " - Well done and thanks Elisse.

12.01.2022 Enjoyable early Winter group skike on Saturday morning along the Yarra River, Mullum Mullum Creek and Eastern Freeway trails in Melbourne. Kathy comfortably made it to Park Rd and back for the first time, to complete a 30km trip. A couple of us went on to do the full 42 km circuit.

12.01.2022 On a lovely Spring Saturday afternoon today we skiked the picturesque Darebin Creek trial from Norris Bank to the Yarra River trail and back.

12.01.2022 Wishing Skike Australia customers and friends a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Hope you are enjoying your skiking at least as much as we are.

12.01.2022 A group of skikers (Aussie mates) got together in fine weather and on good snow at Falls Creek this morning and did a pre Kangaroo Hoppet (World Loppet marathon cross country ski race) race pace session over the 42 km course. (Preparations for the big dance next Saturday.)

10.01.2022 Last Saturday morning whilst the main group went around our main 42km loop in reverse (Yarra River trail from Templestowe to Heidelberg, Eastern Freeway trail, Koonung Creek trial, Mullum Mullum Creek trail and return on Yarra River trail) I skipped the turn off to the bridge over the Yarra River at Burke Rd and continued on to explore the trail on the North side of the river, which I had been on a couple of nights earlier whilst Park and Street Orienteering.

10.01.2022 Beautiful sunny Autumn day for skiking today/Saturday (unusual 30c with cool start). Decided to do the 43km loop on the Yarra River, Mullum Mullum Creek, Koonung Creek and back up the Yarra trail.

10.01.2022 Very enjoyable Easter Monday skike discovering parts of trails we have not skiked before in the north of Melbourne. Paul took it easy and decided to duck under. The roos were having a lazy morning.

09.01.2022 The bush fire smoke has cleared and cooler temperatures in Melbourne this morning. We had 8 skikers out for an enjoyable 35 km skike from Templestowe to Eltham, Research, Diamond Creek and return. Several are training for skiing overseas in coming weeks and three will be joining NSW and ACT skiers to compete in the World Masters Cross Country skiing Championships in March in Cogne in the Aosta Valley in Italy.

09.01.2022 We had an kangaroo audience beside us whilst Richard was having a beginner skike try and ski skate instruction session on Friday evening in Melbourne.

09.01.2022 We are enjoying the new v9 FIRE 150 skikes. Lots of smiles.

09.01.2022 This weekend at Falls Creek there will be 2 very enjoyable days of XC ski racing with the Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour on Saturday 14 July and the YMCA H...owmans Gap Victorian Relays on Sunday 15 July. These fun races are great preparation for later races in the season. They are run by Howmans Gap Allstars Ski Club Inc for Ski Cross Country Victoria. The Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour is freestyle, offering course distances of 2.5, 5 and 10 km, as well as a 1 km fun event to encourage participation by skiers of any age to have a try of going around an easy race course. HGA races are well known for lots of spot prizes as well as age category prizes. The YMCA Howmans Gap Victorian Relays of 2.5kms and 5kms are for 3 person teams (one classic and 2 freestyle skiers). It is fun to ski in a team, encourage your team mates and challenge other teams. NEW in 2018, to encourage everyone to enjoy the fun of relay racing, any three people can form a team. No age, club membership nor single sex requirement (except if you want to be eligible for a Championship certificate). Form a team with 3 friends or family members of any age. Everyone who enters, pays the entry fee and completes the relay race will be eligible to win one of the many spot prizes which include SWIX poles (value $165) and accommodation and meal vouchers for 2 at Howmans Gap (value $204). All the races are scheduled to start at 11am, with the exception of Saturday’s 1km fun event which will start at 12 noon, and it will only cost $5 to enter. Race entry fees for all the other races are also low cost and are still the same entry fees as they were in 2012. Entries will be taken in the Windy Corner Day Shelter between 9 and 10am on race day, but anyone racing in the Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour are encouraged to please pre-register online at http://www.dbstrategies.com.au/hga_races/ up to 8.00pm this Friday 13/7/18. After pre-registering online, on the morning of the race you will need to sign the individual pre-printed entry form that will be waiting for you, and pay your entry fees to complete your race entry. Please do yourself a favour and support the races this coming weekend (and the race sponsors http://www.crosscountryskier.com.au/ and http://www.camps.ymca.org.au/locate/howmans-gap.html )

07.01.2022 Ray collected his new v9 FIRE 150 skikes on Tuesday and then went skiking with Nel. Great to see them enjoying skiking together.

07.01.2022 Roger has been cross country ski training on roller blades for many years but has seen skikes as a way to add fun into his exercise, enable him to go on more varied and challenging terrain and, have better braking capability. After trying and buying v9 FIRE 150 skikes on Tuesday he commented "The V9s are a very stable and beautifully engineered skate." We agree with him. Welcome to our "Skike Force" Roger.

07.01.2022 Lake Mountain time-trial, Saturday 6 July, 10 AM. Since the Birkie Classic has been cancelled due to a lack of snow, some skiers might be interested in a time-t...rial on man-made snow at Lake Mountain. Were considering 5 and 10 km options. This is an unofficial event, which means everyone is responsible for themselves, and must respect other skiers etc. If you are interested, please let Kevin know by e-mail using the following poorly disguised e-mail address (so that Im not inundated with spam): kevin at skitree dot net. See more

06.01.2022 Skiker Kathy (with husband Luke in the "About Skike Australia" picture at the top right side of this page) really enjoys skiking, which encouraged her friend Jen to try skiking last Saturday. As a non-skier beginner, Jen did very well and did not need any convincing. She went home with new skike equipment including a set of v9 FIRE 150 skikes to use on the Warby rail trail.

05.01.2022 A reminder that the Victorian Rollerski and Skike Championships are on again at Lake Mountain next Sunday 6 May. They are fun and not too difficult. There are 4.5 km and 10 km course options. Enter on the day at the entry gate office (Cascades). Skikers please support the event and have some very good winter ski season preparation at altitude. https://www.lakemountainresort.com.au//victorian-rollersk/

05.01.2022 It is winter so we have had a few wet and muddy skikes lately. Todays 42km skike around Melbourne creek and river trails was lots of fun. Our legs got a trifle dirty. (A good advertisement for mudguards which are now standard on the v7 PLUS PRO skikes that we have in stock.)

05.01.2022 After 10 years away from it, Kashi has rediscovered his love for cross country skiing. On Wednesday he tried skiking to enable him to enjoy the passion all year round. He was like "a duck to water" and was skating very competently straight away. Welcome to our Aussie Skike Force Kashi.

04.01.2022 There is a sculptor's studio that we often pass when skiking along Main Rd Eltham through to Research in Melbourne. On Tuesday we stopped and took a few photos of some of the highly skilled works. See also https://www.3aw.com.au/photos-chainsaw-artist-honours-war-/

04.01.2022 Les is from country Victoria and he travels around with his work. He discovered skikes and decided he would like to take them with him as he travels around, so that he can explore a wide range of tracks that are available across the State. He had prior skating experience which helped him when he tried skikes with us last week. Welcome to our Aussie Skike Force Les. We look forward to learning about the great trails that you find.

04.01.2022 The Victorian Roller Ski and Skike Championships on Sunday 5 May at Lake Mountain are just 18 days away. Enter at https://www.webscorer.com/register

04.01.2022 It is winter so we have had a few wet and muddy skikes lately. Today's 42km skike around Melbourne creek and river trails was lots of fun. Our legs got a trifle dirty. (A good advertisement for mudguards which are now standard on the v7 PLUS PRO skikes that we have in stock.)

03.01.2022 It never surprises, the many things people do on skikes.

03.01.2022 Claudiu has set a goal to complete a 90km cross country ski race on snow next March and he has decided to use skikes as a way to prepare. In his introductory lesson on skikes he took to them exceptionally well, learning technique quickly and easily becoming comfortable. He has ordered a set of v9 FIRE 150 skikes and one4YOU poles from our new shipment, which arrived by ship into port in Melbourne last night. Claudiu will be a welcome member of our regular training group when we are allowed to restart training together.

03.01.2022 There are now several Aussie skikers training on skikes with their dogs. The latest is ski-jorer Allan from Phillip Island. The 18th World sled and skidog Championships are currently being held for the first time in France. There are teams from 30 countries with 1700 dogs. The opening ceremony last night was complete with a large brass band and march past of teams behind country flags. Today sled dog teams of 6-8-10-12 dogs and ski-joering (1 & 2 dog teams with a skating skier) were racing 24 and 42km. Sled team relays 3 x 42 km are to come.

01.01.2022 Although we still have around meter of snow on the ground up on the Bogong High Plains, the ski season officially ended last weekend (and therefore no more track grooming). So our regular groups were back onto the skikes this week. For our Melbourne Saturday morning skike we discovered that we have a a new section of trail on the Mullum Mullum Creek, beyond Park Rd Park Orchards, to connect to the Koonung Creek/ and Eastern Freeway trails. We now officially have a 42km circuit (see photo of map sign) and we did a 33km out and back trip that explored the new section of trail. It is very picturesque and enjoyable, as these pictures show. A very welcome addition to our kit bag of skiking options. We also met Suzanna (thanks for the photos) and Lou on the trail this morning who are interested in trying skiking.

01.01.2022 The Autumn weather and colours were beautiful for the Victorian Roller Ski and Skike Championships at Lake Mountain on 6 May. Five days later Lake Mountain was covered in several cms of snow. On the way to the event there was a glorious sight of a number of hot air balloons in the early morning sky. They could be seen from the Kangaroo Ground skyline and they landed near Yarra Glen as we passed through. The colours of the Autumn trees were also a joy to behold.

01.01.2022 Ten skikers out at Westerfolds Park in Melbourne this morning to welcome in the new year. We had a most enjoyable 29km skike from Templestowe to the Research Aqueduct and back via Eltham and the Diamond Creek trail. Luke covered 35km with his warm up and additional sojourns up ahead and back to the group.

01.01.2022 Tim learnt to cross country ski in the USA. Like many others he has just discovered skikes as the way to ski on and off track, all year round. He was very capable ski skating on skikes almost straight away when he tried them for the first time on Wednesday. Welcome as the latest member of our Aussie "Skike Force" Tim.
