25.01.2022 ANXIETY - THE UNINVITED GUEST A lot of people have reported not only feeling very nervous but also experiencing heightened levels of anxiety in the current bush fire situation. Symptoms may range from clammy hands, feeling tense, having chest or stomach pains, getting the runs, being unable to relax and having trouble with sleep, to feeling outright overwhelmed and unable to think straight. Anxiety can considerably impair our ability to cope and be present and do our best wh...en needed. Mark Grant, a clinical psychologist with over 20 years experience in the treatment of stress, trauma and pain, has developed an app called Anxiety Release. It is a digital anxiety intervention that can be done on the smart phone in everyday life situations when anxiety flares up. It works with non-verbal auditory and visual stimuli and this sensory input helps the brain to shift away from anxious thought and feelings. This is explained in more detail on his website. https://anxietyreleaseapp.com Mark has kindly offered to give away 100 free downloads of this app for people who have been affected by the fires. Please email him - [email protected] - with details of the type of phone they use (android or IOS) and he will send you a promo code. Thank you, Mark, for your generosity and support!
23.01.2022 SOMATICS Somatics is a movement therapy, a way of re-educating the way our brain senses and moves the muscles. There is yoga that is influenced by somatics, called somatic yoga, and specific somatic exercises that work directly with the nervous system to release chronic muscular tension, relieve stress and chronic pain, and improve posture and movement. The exercises are extremely slow and gentle, and are appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Esther Ekhart is a yoga t...eacher who teaches both of the above. In the article below she explains Somatics in more detail. https://www.ekhartyoga.com/resourc/styles/yoga-and-somatics And these are the links to the 3 part somatic sequence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeJlrUPePLc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r39igD7Tj8A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kMvgv166bo James Knight is another well known somatic practitioner and yoga teacher. 17.01.2022 Interview of integrative medicine psychiatrists Robert Brown and Patricia Gerland Robert Brown and Patricia Gerland are both psychiatrists. They are a husband and wife team and follow the philosophy of integrative medicine, an approach that focuses on the individual patient and combines conventional western medicine with evidence-based natural medicine and therapies within the current mainstream system. They have done a lot of research over the years, studying the effect of ...breathing exercises on the body and particularly on the nervous system. This is their website with scientific books, articles and chapters in case you want to find out more. https://www.breath-body-mind.com/science-article-abstracts I would like to encourage you to listen to the interview below in which Patricia and Robert talk about how they developed an interest in breath, the research they have done, how they have translated and applied their findings into their practice with patients and some heartwarming projects they have done for refugees and other children to help them overcome trauma. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AbDwikq2ww Patricia and Robert are part of the No Limit Generation initiative, which offers evidence-based, trauma-informed training videos that are made in partnership with the world’s leading child well-being professionals. 17.01.2022 YIN YOGA There are many different schools and forms of Yoga. Some have a more activating effect on the nervous system, some, like Yin Yoga, result more in the calming down of the nervous system. Yin Yoga is mat based and all movements are done slowly. You gently sink into the posture and only stretch partially, then hold for an extended time, for 45 seconds to 2 min or even longer. This stretches the deep connective tissues between the muscles, and the fascia throughout the... body and results in deep relaxation and a true descend into stillness. 15.01.2022 JIN SHIN JYUTZU - THE ART OF RELEASING TENSION I first came across Jin Shin Jyutzu in the US in Sedona, a place where a lot of alternative minded people live. I overheard a conversation in which a man stated that his liver is so much better since he was regularly holding his middle finger. I initially thought that he must be one of the odd ones but at the same time was curious about his statement and did some research on it and found out that he had been referring to Jin Shi...n Jyutzu.. I learned that Jin Shin Jyutzu, an ancient Japanese history, was rediscovered by Master Jiro Murai early in the 20th century and was introduced to the US in the 1950ties by his student Mary Burmeister. I was surprised to discover that the Markey Cancer Centre in Lexington, Kentucky, employs a Jin Shin Jyutzu integrative medical practitioner to help with cancer treatment and recovery (see first youtube for credibility). I then recalled having happily overheard when a friend was telling me years ago that her family did a kind of ‘streaming’ on her when she recovered for months in hospital from an extremely bad car accident. My curiosity grew and led me further to trying it on myself and, after a crash course, trying it with family and friends. And, I was amazed about it’s simplicity and effectiveness in calming the nervous system down. I have to admit though, as a psychologist, I have to overcome a kind of professional embarrassment, tend to talk about the finger holds in an understating way, to use them experientially and as a take home strategy. The majority of feed-back that I get from my clients though is that it does make a difference for them. The streaming is a beautiful giving for a friend or loved one. It is very calming for both, the giver and the receiver. And, it can have surprising results too. My 93 year old mother recovered within 15 minutes from a shock reaction after having eaten the wrong food and a fellow traveller with emerging altitude sickness recovered after 20 minutes and was able to continue walking with the group to the next tea house instead of having to be transported to a lower location. I think the streaming would be particularly lovely and comforting to do with a child who is upset. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes. For easy access and comfort of the giver, it is best done with the receiver lying on a table, with plenty of cushions available to stuff under arms and/or lean on to stay relaxed during the treatment. Find below all information you need if you would like to give it a trial to find out whether it could work for you. 13.01.2022 YOGA to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and PTSD A number of studies have shown that the practice of yoga has an effective role in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression yoga and even PTSD. https://www.health.harvard.edu//yoga-for-anxiety-and-depre https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5843960/... Bessel van der Kolk, a clinical psychiatrist who founded the Trauma Centre in Alabama, is considered one of the world's leading authorities on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He has done research in this area since the 1970ties and pioneered the use of Yoga as a therapy. He found that it is helping people to work through their PTSD and regain a sense of mastery. In this context, trauma-sensitive yoga was developed in 2002. In the interview below he explains the benefits of yoga. https://kripalu.org//how-yoga-helps-heal-trauma-qa-bessel- Bessel van der Kolk has written the well-known book ‘The body keeps the score’ in which he explains how memory is stored in the body and therefore advocates to include body oriented approaches as an adjunct to talk therapy when treating people with PTSD.
10.01.2022 RESTORING SOUND SLEEP When being faced with stressful situations people often find that their sleep is affected. This is because their nervous system gets highly activated and it does not easily switch back down to a lower gear at night. At times, when we are in threatening or unpredictable situations, like the current fires, it can even get ‘stuck’ on high gear, resulting in insomnia. Yet, sound and sufficient sleep is so important to handle mental and emotional challenges. ...This is, because in the absence of sensory information and mental activity, the nervous system can go through a recovery phase, like a rubber band that gets stretched during the day and bounces back and regains its elasticity at night. Research in neuro-science shows that the restoration of sleep builds the foundation for physical, mental and emotional well-being. For this reason, addressing insomnia plays a pivotal role when you want to strengthen and restore inner and outer health. Considering the above, I would like to make you aware of the sleep restore app, developed by Mark Grant, a clinical psychologist with over 20 years experience in the treatment of stress, trauma and pain. Sleep Restore is uniquely designed for sufferers of stress-related insomnia and uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a trauma therapy method which has been found to decrease brain activity associated with worry and physical tension associated with stress. Find more in-depth information about stress, brain functioning and sleep, on EMDR and the use of the app on Mark’s website https://sleeprestoreapp.com The basic version of the app is free and is available for android and IOS mobiles. I highly recommend to trial it.

07.01.2022 Interview on Breath with Dan Brulé, pioneer in the field of breath work Find below the link to an Interview with Dan Brulé, the leading pioneer in Breathwork and the leader of the worldwide Spiritual Breathing movement. Staring out in his professional life, he has served in the United States Navy as a medical deep-sea diveduring the Vietnam era, a very specialised and demanding job, and completed his master's degree in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the interview, Dan talks abo...ut his life’s journey and how his career has lead him to develop an interest in breath, his observations about how the way we breathe affects our lives and how we can use the breath to improve health, emotional balance and work performance. He is interviewed by Tom Garner, author of the delightful and informative book ‘Draw Breath’ that I have mentioned in one of my earlier postings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daxntCAuNjU Dan Brulé, together with Tony Robbins, have written a book called 'Just Breathe’ which I can highly recommend. When you purchase the audio version, you will have the delight to listen to Dan readings his own book and catch the passion that he carries for this topic. https://books.google.com.au/books/about/Just_Breathe.html
06.01.2022 Breathe for emotional and physical wellbeing and health Breathing - we all do it from the moment we are born until our last breath at the end of our lives. It happens automatically without us having to pay much attention to it. The way we breathe is often a reflection of our emotional and mental state, the tension we hold, the flow we are in, hesitancy, the worries, anxieties and anger that occupy our hearts and minds. The potential of consciously working with the breath has... become part of different professional practices and therapies: to name just a few, it is used for singing and voice training; to help with asthma; to boost physical health and resilience; to calm anxiety; it is an integral part of yoga and meditation; and it plays a pivital role in therapeutic approaches like mindfulness, or rebirthing to presence or release emotions charges. I will write a few seperate small articles about some of the above and provide links to followup up if you are inspired to inform yourself further about this topic and how to make use of it personally or professionally. At this stage I would like to draw your attention to an as much informative as delightfully presented book called Draw Breath. The author and illustrator, Tom Garner, has created a unique book that is filled with a mix of information and breathing, mindfulness and mediation practices, all aesthetically embedded in colourful art work. It is very stimulation to read and invites to explore and experiment with breathing in combination with doing enjoyable tracing and drawing exercises. https://www.drawbreath.com/about-draw-breath
03.01.2022 I have a strong interest promoting natural interventions for mental health issues and would like to share a number of links that I recently found when I did a google search for a clients with an obsessive compulsive problem. A study done by Khalsa and co-workers from the University of California found that Yoga, more specifically the system taught by Yogi Bhajan, can be very effective in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder. For further information have a look at the follo...wing website: http://www.holisticonline.com//anx_OCD-alternative-therapi (click on yoga to get to the relevant section). For people who enjoy reading the whole write up of the experiment go for it here: http://www.reconnectwithfood.com/r/documents/yogaandocd.pdf The helpfulness of Kundalini Yoga has been confirmed by a number of people: http://www.stuckinadoorway.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4759. Very disappointing thought that the internetyogi website of David Shannahoff-Khalsa is no longer accessible. The practice of some mudra's might also be helpful to deal with some of the associated symptoms of OCD. Shunya Mudra, the Mudra of Emptyness is said to benefit the mentally challenged and Surya Mudra, the Mudra of the Sun is said to helf in cases of anxiety. http://healthmad.com//health-in-your-hand-seven-mudras-fo/. I got this information from Bess Cunnigham's blog (http://besscunningham.blogspot.com//ocd-hand-yoga-mudras-f) who impressed me because she freed herself from OCD using natural methods. Please spread this information so that people in need of support can access it. Love, Light, Clarity, and Awakening See more
