25.01.2022 This is from the Mayor advising everyone to stay away for Easter and do not come to Mandurah with your boat over Easter , self isolation is required

25.01.2022 Just be careful on the beaches

25.01.2022 A reminder that fishing closures for blue swimmer crabs and pink snapper start today. All waters, coastal, rivers and estuaries, from the Swan River to Minninup... Beach (15km south of Bunbury) are now closed to blue swimmer crab fishing from 1 September to 30 November inclusive to protect breeding stock. Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are now closed to fishing for pink snapper, or being in possession of pink snapper while line fishing from 1 September to 31 January inclusive to allow pink snapper to spawn. The area includes north to Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and west to the inside of Five Fathom Bank. Pink snapper spawning in Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds is critical for sustaining adequate breeding stocks along the lower west coast. DPIRD scientists have been providing advice on pink snapper and blue swimmer crabs to the Westport Taskforce that is looking at future port facilities in Kwinana. Check the rules by species and location when you plan your next fishing trip. To find out more, visit http://rules.fish.wa.gov.au/

19.01.2022 Xmas Kids Fishing Clinic at Cockburn bookings are now available on line

19.01.2022 We're asking Western Australians to cancel their travel plans this Easter, even if they don't involve leaving their region. And just to be clear, WA's campsites... are now closed - your camping trip is just going to have to wait. Please, stay home this weekend. But that doesn't mean that we can't make the Easter long weekend special, especially for our youngest West Aussies. There's no rule against setting up a tent in your own backyard, or treating your own house like a holiday house for a couple of days. And while you might not be able to travel for a holiday with your extended family or friends, we're lucky that in 2020 they are just a quick video-chat away. Our annual traditions might be on hold for a year, but that doesn't mean we can't start some new ones to make this Easter special. So please, stay home this Easter long weekend.

18.01.2022 Just a reminder to everyone

18.01.2022 Set up for today’s clinic. Sun is shining

18.01.2022 The annual pink snapper closure for Shark Bays Freycinet Estuary starts on Saturday, 15 August and will continue until 30 September. The Estuary will be closed... to recreational and commercial pink snapper fishing to allow the fish to breed undisturbed and help maintain healthy and sustainable stocks. Pink snapper spawning closures in Shark Bays inner gulfs ensure these stocks remain sustainable into the future. Results from a survey of boat-based recreational fishing in 2018/19 will be published soon. For more information, visit https://www.fish.wa.gov.au//Shark-Bay-pin/Pages/index.aspx See more

17.01.2022 Are you getting ready for the opening of the blue swimmer crabbing season in the Swan and Canning Rivers on 1 December? Before you head out to catch a feed, it ...is timely to remind crab fishers to remove the head, guts (mustard) and gills from crabs caught in these rivers before freezing, cooking or eating. This is a general caution because toxic algal bloom events of Alexandrium have been detected in these rivers at elevated levels in recent years and could become an annual occurrence. It is important to take note of new caution signage along the rivers and be aware of health warnings about Alexandrium, an alga which can produce a type of Paralytic Shellfish Toxin which bioaccumulates in crustacea and mussels. Consumption of affected crabs may be dangerous, and in extreme cases can be fatal. For a step by step guide on how to properly clean your blue swimmer crabs, visit http://fish.wa.gov.au/alerts. Watch the video, download the flyer or read the FAQs, so you can be prepared for a clean feed of blue swimmers this season. Please also know your crabbing rules, including bag and size limits.

17.01.2022 The Department of Health has issued an ALL CLEAR just in time for the long weekend, lifting the health warning on the consumption of shellfish, fish and crustac...eans from designated areas of the Swan and Canning Rivers. The warning has been in place due to the presence of toxic Alexandrium algae which produce toxins that can be bioaccumulated in shellfish, fish and crustaceans. If these animals are then ingested, a condition known as paralytic shellfish poisoning can result. For more information, visit the Department of Health website. https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au//Fishing-and-crabbing-in-the- Thank you for your patience and good fishing! Please abide by all fishing rules and bag limits and if you see anything suspicious, report it to FishWatch on 1800 815 507. See more

15.01.2022 Perfecting the fishing knots

14.01.2022 The restrictions we have had to put in place during this crisis have been significant and disruptive, and the limitations on seeing family and friends have been... particularly difficult for many. But the overwhelming majority of Western Australians have done the right thing, and it has paid off so far. Our State has seen remarkable results in the fight against COVID-19 - and while that fight will continue for some time yet, those results mean we can now cautiously adjust some of the most extreme of those restrictions. As of tomorrow, 27 April, based on expert health advice, the two person limit on non-work indoor and outdoor gatherings will be adjusted, with the limit rising to 10 people. Additionally, the list of acceptable activities to do away from home has been expanded slightly. Everyone should continue to practise appropriate social distancing and stay home except for: Shopping for what you need, such as food or other necessary supplies Medical or health care needs, including compassionate requirements Exercise, including outdoor personal training without shared equipment Training or University study, where remote learning is unavailable Childcare or school Work Non-contact recreational activities such as private picnics in the park, fishing, boating, hiking and camping all in compliance with travel restrictions and the new 10-person rule Home opens and display village openings, with appropriate record keeping and hygiene practices in place, and in compliance with the 10-person rule A maximum of 10 people will be allowed at weddings (an increase from the five person limit), funerals, outdoor personal training (no shared equipment), home opens and display village inspections as part of these changes. The new 10-person rule aligns Western Australia with South Australia. The two-person rule was adopted in WA going further than what was recommended at the time in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19. All other restrictions will remain in place for now, and all public playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment to remain closed. These decisions are based on the best medical advice in the country and as outlined by National Cabinet restrictions could be in place for six months, but subject to regular review. Thank you again for doing such a great job so far. Although these changes are small, I hope they will help many Western Australians get through this difficult period.

14.01.2022 Just a quick reminder for recreational fishers that the Southern Zone season is now closed for abalone fishing. This zone (Zone 3) extends from the Busselton Je...tty to the South Australian border and abalone fishing will reopen on 1 October 2020 and run to 15 May 2021. The closed season is part of a combination of management arrangements to ensure this fishery remains sustainable. All recreational fishers have an important role to play in the stewardship of this highly valued resource and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development compliance officers have the technology and strategies to keep an eye on this fishery to ensure the closure is not breached. To let DPIRD know about any illegal fishing activity you become aware of, see the reporting guidelines lines on this link and call 1800 815 507: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au//Contact-Us/Pages/Fish-watch.aspx See more

08.01.2022 We've been talking to Fremantle Port Authority, who've told us they'll be closing North Mole on Sunday morning ahead of the big blow coming in this weekend. Th...ey tell us they try to keep the Mole open as long as possible, but have to put the public's safety first. So if you are contemplating chasing pinkies off the stones this weekend, you'll need to choose an alternative rock-wall on Sunday. However, with big swells forecast on Sunday and Monday due to the impact of Cyclone Mangga, rock fishers should think very carefully about safe fishing considerations and gear themselves up with the appropriate gear accordingly including a lifejacket and rock safe fishing boots. For those who are not regular rock fishers or are thinking having a go at it for the first time, we strongly recommend you fish from the beach or the river as a much safer alternative. The Port Authority say they will reopen the Mole as soon as it is safe to do so - although this can involve removing debris and sand from the road in first. Check out the Port Authority's website homepage for updates on the Mole's access status. More rock fishing info on our Fish and Survive website here https://bit.ly/3e15GUW

03.01.2022 The waters north of Bernier Island, including Koks Island, are now closed to recreational and commercial pink snapper fishing for three months. It is the peak s...pawning period for these fish in the Gascoyne and the protection of these important aggregations is a key strategy implemented to recover this iconic species. You can play your part in supporting Gascoyne oceanic pink snapper recovery by sticking to the rules and avoiding them in the closed area. The closure is in place from 1 June until 31 August inclusive. Fishing for other species from a boat is allowed, but during this time it is illegal to fish for or be in possession of pink snapper. Visit our website for a map of the area or download our fact sheet for more information. http://www.fish.wa.gov.au//Ga/Pages/Seasonal-Closures.aspx http://www.fish.wa.gov.au//northern_bernier_island_pink_sn
