24.01.2022 The Fitzpatrick Scale - What is your type? Developed in 1975, the system classifies skin type according to the amount of pigment your skin has and how your skin reacts to sun exposure. This information can help predict your overall risk of sun damage and skin cancer. We use this scale to determine if a person is a candidate for certain treatments like chemical peels and IPL. If you are skin type 1 or 2, you have a higher risk of:... - Sun damage - Skin ageing from sun exposure - Skin cancer and melanoma - Vascular skin conditions (broken blood vessels and Post Inflammatory Erythema) If you’re skin type 3 to 6, you have a higher risk of: - Hyperpigmentation - Hypopigmentation - Photoageing - Scarring and post inflammatory pigmentation Types 3-6 do have a lower skin cancer skin but you still MUST wear spf daily and take the necessary precautions. 06.01.2022 Let’s talk about some skin anatomy. It is important to understand that our skin is one of the largest organs of the body and is our first line of defence against the environment and it’s invaders. It has multiple functions some of which include regulating our body temperature and preventing excess water loss for the body. It consists of three main layers - the Epidermis, Dermis and Subcutaneous Layer.... Our Epidermis is continuously producing a protective layer of skin cells. This is an active process that occurs without our knowledge. The Epidermis itself is made up of 5 layers. As the new cells in the Basal layer mature and move up towards the skins surface they flatten and thicken and over time are sloughed off. This process slows down as we age which is when we introduce particular home care products and treatments to help combat early signs of ageing. The Dermis is responsible for the pliability, elasticity and strength of the skin. The Dermis contains collagen and elastin fibres also nerves, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands and blood vessels plus lots more! The subcutaneous layer is made up of fat cells and stores energy for the body. It also provides protection for our muscles and bone and acts as a shock absorber. The thickness of this layer varies depending on the site, it is thickest on the soles of our feet and thinnest on the eyelids.
