21.01.2022 How to apply sunscreen properly? When using a facial day moisturiser (which usually have low SPF), you may not be fully protected. A recent study published in PLOS ONE, found that people do a worse job applying an SPF moisturiser to their face than a traditional sunscreen. This study showed that people missed more skin, especially the region around the eyelids an area particularly vulnerable to squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. We recommend applyi...ng sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30+ and ideally SPF 50+. SPF30 filters 96.7% of UVB and SPF50 filters 98%. Both can provide excellent protection if they are applied properly. Remember to use a generous amount of sunscreen to not forget about the eyelids! The eyelids are an at-risk area, where the skin is thin and can burn easily. They should be covered with sunscreen as much as it is practical. The average-sized adult needs a teaspoon of sunscreen for their head and neck, each limb and for the front and the back of the body. That is about 35ml of sunscreen for one full-body application. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outside and re-apply again every two hours (whether or not the label tells you to do this). 20.01.2022 SUNBURN A sunburn is not the same as when you burn your skin on something hot. When we think of a burn, we think of heat. But it’s not the sun’s heat that burns our skin. Sunburns are from ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) causing damage to the skin. That’s why you can still get sunburned when the weather is cold. ... Sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes in Australia. Having more than 5 sunburns doubles the risk of melanoma. There’s no simple way to reverse sun damage yet. But, there are lots of simple ways to prevent it by being sun-safe and avoiding sunburns. Choose a broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards.
