This has led to an increase in skin irritation and breakouts in the peri oral region. Why is this happening? ... Masks are designed to prevent the spread of droplets and filter the air we are breathing. When wearing masks for extended periods of time, the environment within the mask becomes humid & moist. This is a perfect breeding ground for our resident microorganisms contributing to and exacerbating skin irritation and breakouts. Coupled with the increased humidity, face masks are continually rubbing against the skin, creating a compromised skin barrier. A compromised barrier means more TEWL (Trans-epidermal Water Loss) which makes the skin barrier more permeable, allowing in substances that would not usually enter. Both of these mask-wearing effects are thought to be contributing to the increase in acne lesions or dermatitis-like rashes in the mouth area. How can I manage this? In Australia particularly, the sun's harmful UV rays are ramping right up well beyond safe levels. You can track the UV levels through built in weather app's on most Apple or Samsung devices. Anything above a UV 2 is considered unsafe. ... Did you know that there are two main types of UV radiation? We have both UVA and UVB rays to compete with and they are the bad guys known to cause skin cancers. Ultraviolet light A (UVA) has a longer wavelength ranging from 320nm - 400nm and is more commonly associated with skin ageing. Ultraviolet light B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength ranging from 280nm - 320nm and is known for its skin burning effects. SPF tip- always look for broad spectrum SPF of at least 30+, but ideally 50+. These factors are usually only an indication of UVB protection. In Australia particularly, the suns harmful UV rays are ramping right up well beyond safe levels. You can track the UV levels through built in weather apps on most Apple or Samsung devices. Anything above a UV 2 is considered unsafe. ... Did you know that there are two main types of UV radiation? We have both UVA and UVB rays to compete with and they are the bad guys known to cause skin cancers. Ultraviolet light A (UVA) has a longer wavelength ranging from 320nm - 400nm and is more commonly associated with skin ageing. Ultraviolet light B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength ranging from 280nm - 320nm and is known for its skin burning effects. SPF tip- always look for broad spectrum SPF of at least 30+, but ideally 50+. Next, after cleansing we can build the next step of our pyramid which is the addition of a serum. A serum is a concentrated preparation of active ingredients to deliver results. A moisturiser is an emollient and serves the purpose of rehydration for the skin. Moisturisers can also contain antioxidants and actives. Even better, leave some moisture on the skin or leave them to air dry.
