Did you know that two thirds of Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70. Thats only a 33% chance that you will NOT develop a skin cancer by the time you hit 70! Remember that sun protection is essential to reduce the risk of skin cancer. We would like to re-iterate the message...s by the Australasian College of Dermatologists and Cancer Council by encouraging you to slip on sun-protective clothing, slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. Remember that it is UV that burns skin and causes skin cancer and not the heat produced by the sun. The UV index can be high on cloudy days! 23.01.2022 The sun emits UVA and UVB radiation. Both forms of radiation cause sunburn. UV radiation is invisible to the human eye and is not always associated with sunny days! UVA This penetrates deep in the skin layers and damages the stem cells of the skin and the dermis. High doses of UVA radiation can cause sunburn and damage genes causing skin cancer. If thats not enough to motivate you to protect yourself from UVA, excessive UVA radiation over a long period of time can cau...se premature ageing of the skin. UVB Whilst UVB does not penetrate as deep in the skin as UVA, it burns the skin more readily. Every sunburn is one step closer to the development of skin cancer and premature ageing. There is no such thing as a healthy tan! When our skin is exposed to UV radiation, the bodies natural defense is to create more melanin, the pigment molecule. Whilst melanin can help reduce the effects of UV rays on the skin, it is often not enough for those with lighter skin tones to prevent skin cancer or premature ageing. Hence, it is important to know that damage to your skin can still occur in the absence of a sunburn. In essence, having a tan means there has been enough UV radiation hitting the skin to cause damage to skin cells. .
