25.01.2022 In the early hours of yesterday morning, the team were sent into the Kaweka Ranges after a PLB (personal locator beacon) was set off. The crew found the party a...nd winched them out of the dense bush. Our ICP, Ryan Sutherland, did a great job treating one person in the party who had injured his ankle. It was night time so visibility was poor and they had very high winds to contend with so our finest pilot Hamish Ramsay and crewman Clarkie did an incredible job finding the party and winching them out. We are so lucky to have great operational crew on our helicopters who can fly in some tough situations with years of experience. See more

16.01.2022 TWO RESCUES TRIGGERED IN 30 MINUTES The value of personal locator beacons (PLBs) was demonstrated this afternoon when Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre g...uided rescue helicopters to Stewart Island and to south of Nelson Lakes, after two PLBs were triggered within 20 minutes of each other. A solo tramper on the Waiau Pass, south of Lake Rotoiti, was picked up by GCH Aviation from Nelson and transferred to Nelson Hospital after activating a PLB at 2.30pm. The person’s injuries were not considered to be serious. Then, at 2.47pm, a second PLB was set off by a group of hunters on Stewart Island. One of the party of six had fallen. That person was picked up by a Southern Lakes helicopter from Te Anau and transferred to Invercargill, where he was transferred to an advanced care Emergency Medical Services helicopter from Otago Helicopters and transferred to Dunedin Hospital. These events showed the importance of carrying a personal locator beacon. Early notification by their PLBs has meant that an emergency helicopter response could get quickly to both people in these remote locations.
