25.01.2022 SKI #ZAKOPANE Popular world-wide for its Nordic skiing! Zakopane, Poland's premier ski resort is located 120 kilometres south of Krakow, near the Slovak boarder and on the edge of the famous Tatra Mountains. The ski slopes are 3 kilometres from the town centre and are connected by a local bus service. The downhill ski area is the best in Poland and the resort features numerous cross-country skiing trails, a winter stadium and hosts the World Cup ski-jumps-event each year. Th...e largest vertical drop is 929 meters and the total length of slopes is 30 kilometers. Advanced skiers can also ski Bukowina Tatrzanska, a traditional highlander village in the Tatra Mountains. Regular buses operate across the mountains to Lysa Polana in Slovakia. The best skiing can be found on the mountain Kasprowy Wierch 1985 metres up. To reach the top you will have to take the cable car, which was built in 1936 and it is divided in two parts. The first part takes you up to an altitude of 1350 metres and the second part takes you to the way to the top. Once here you have the choice between two long slopes for your trip back down this beautiful mountain. Excellent skiing conditions can be also found on Polana Szymoszkowa, next to the Orbis-Kasprowy Hotel. There are artificial snow making systems here as well as a chairlift that will take skiers to the top of Gubaówka ridge. Another popular place is Nosal, also with artificial snow making systems and offers a dozen or so T-bar lifts as well as a chairlift. Beginners can learn to ski on the well-known Koziniec, which has plenty of nursery slopes.

19.01.2022 #SKI #Slovenia There is no shortage of ski resorts in Europe, however if you want to get off the beaten track and find something a little different, why not head to Slovenia. When it comes to value for money, Slovenia fares extremely well. Prices are significantly cheaper than its close neighbours France, Italy and Switzerland, which means you really do get a great deal. Hotel accommodation is excellent, food and drink high quality and ski passes and equipment also excellent... value. In short, you don't have to break the bank this year if you want to go skiing. The main resort in Slovenia is the picturesque town of Kranjska Gora which lies at the bottom of the Julien Alps that separate Slovenia from Italy. A relatively small town it offers good accommodation, uncrowded slopes and plenty of welcoming faces. Better still, it is only a short transfer from Ljubljana airport meaning that if you are arrive early you can hit the slopes by lunchtime. The season lasts from November to April and the resort is snow-sure, which means you can relax in the knowledge that there should be plenty of the white stuff around for you to enjoy. Just up the road lies the unforgettable village of Bled, offering skiing on its own slopes as well as easy access to other ski areas. An ideal resort for beginners or first time skiers, Bled is famous for its stunning lake with a picturesque church on an island in the centre. Its ski slopes face the lake and offer breathtaking views. The lift pass for Bled also covers the nearby resorts of Kobla, Vogel and Straza hugely increasing the amount of ski area and all offering excellent English speaking tuition. If you want to mix your ski holiday with a bit of exploring, Slovenia isn't short on things to do. Day trips across the border into Italy are popular, as well as sightseeing trips to many of Slovenia's top tourist destinations such as the Postojna caves.

18.01.2022 #ski #Innsbruck Fantastic skiing and an exceptional cultural experience awaits you in Innsbruck Chosen as the site of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic Games, Innsbruck considers skiing part of its city's life, and is one of the few resorts in Europe with a snow guarantee. Free buses shuttle you from downtown to the nearby ski areas. Innsbruck's largest vertical drop is a whopping 2175 meters and top elevation 3210 meters! With 290 kilometers of slopes you will defiantly not r...un out of space to ski! Among them Igls and Mutters will appeal to the novice and intermediate skiers with long, wide-open trails; Patscherkofel at 7,490 feet and Hafelekar, reached by a series of lifts at the edge of town will offer steep, challenging runs for the more advanced skiers. There are also several snowboard parks in the area including one at Axamer Lizum with half-pipes and natural jumps and one at the Stubai Glacier with a half-pipe, jumps, and a snowboard racecourse. Over 800 years old, this Tyrolian capital displays its historic treasures for all to see. A walk through its streets will take you by the famous Golden Roof, the Ambras Castle, imperial palaces, theatres, opera houses, museums, and much more. Combined with the spectacular natural beauty surrounding it, Innsbruck is hard to beat.

18.01.2022 #SKI #PasdelaCasa Predominantly French influenced Pas de la Casa is Andorra's largest ski resort Pas de la Casa is a lively purpose-built resort situated on the French border at the foot of the largest, most extensive ski area in Andorra. It has an efficient modern lift system enhanced by an excellent snow record, with good conditions usually lasting well into April. Even before the link with Soldeu, Pas de la Casa had the biggest ski area and highest lift-served terrain in A...ndorra. However, with the two resorts combined and referred to as GranVilara there are 192 kilometres of pistes, which is about the same as some of the big-name Alpine resorts such as Kitzbühel, Wengen-Grindelwald and Les Deux Alpes. The longest run at the resort is 20 kilometres with a 700 meter vertical drop. The Font Negre surface lift above Pas de la Casa has been replaced by a six pack, which now extends up towards the top of the Pic Blanc ridge. Two of the three Llac del Cubill surface lifts to the Grau Roig area from the Encamp side have also been upgraded to a six pack. Last season's developments also include the expansion of the Pas de la Casa beginner area, extra snow-making and improvements to the terrain-park and boarder-cross area. The local slopes are situated on a high, treeless, north/south ridge, with Pas de la Casa on the east side and Grau Roig on the west. To the south of Grau Roig, towards the head of the valley, is Mont Malus, a small wooded area served by a drag with a couple of scenic reds and a black run through the trees. To the west of Grau Roig, a quad chair goes up to a ridge from which pistes lead into the next valley and lifts from there up to the Colada d'Enradort, 2447 metres up and the Funicamp top station, which is connected to the village of Encamp by a 6 kilometre gondola. You will now also find 6 kilometres of new off-piste runs, down by the gondola mid-station. The link with Soldeu also starts here. Snowboarding is very popular in the GranValira ski area with a good range of terrain to conquer and a board park and half-pipe on the Grau Roig side of the mountain to pull off the tricks. Other resort attractions include duty free shops, bars, cafés, restaurants and nightclubs. There is also a sports centre with a swimming pool, tennis, squash and a gym. For non-skiers a snowmobiling exploration of the area is sure to thrill or you may like to take a duty-free shopping trip to Andorra's capital, and visit the Caldea Spa and Sport Wellness centre in Soldeu.

18.01.2022 SKI #POLAND Though a less popular winter destination than France or Italy, Poland provides skiing opportunities that are not only fully satisfactory, but also highly affordable. The heart of the Polish Mountains lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, which constitute the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range.... The Tatras provide not only the best-prepared but also the most-frequented ski resorts in the region. Indisputably, the most notable destination here is Zakopane, which is also known as the Gate to the Polish Tatras, or the Winter Capital of Poland. This town has a long history and features every stage of the past century on its well-trodden streets, from old haunts of Polish intellectuals to the more recent addition of Western Society Burger King. With views of the 2,500 metre high Tatras peaks, Zakopane is the highest altitude town in Poland. However, holidaymakers should not expect empty slopes - Zakopane receives two million (not only skiing's) visitors a year, despite only having 30,000 residents. One of the reasons for its popularity is that the resort caters for skiers of all abilities, with technical runs for experts and easier slopes for beginners, as well as cross-country ski opportunities. Another reason for the town's popularity is its unique ambience thanks to unusual buildings, plenty of places to eat and drink and its status as a centre for Poland's mountain-dwelling culture. Accommodation options include good value traditional mountain huts and guest-houses as well as hostels and hotels.

11.01.2022 Ski #Slovakia With superb, empty slopes and bargain prices, no wonder the Tatra mountains are being touted as the next big thing. Slovakia is a winter wonderland, where ski slopes are found virtually everywhere. If there is hill, then there is good chance people will ski down it.... Over the past seven years investment has been pouring in, and infrastructure is being developed at such a rate that tour operators, hoteliers and the rest of the ski industry are excitedly talking about Slovakia as next season's hot new destination. It's cheap, which is great as everyone loves a good bargain. There are also budget flights from the UK to Poprad or Kosice, and hotels and apartments will happily take bookings for less than a week, making ski weekends far easier than in France or Switzerland, if you are travelling through Europe for more than justa ski holiday. Slovakia lies within the Carpathian mountain system, which after the Alps is the second largest and longest in Europe. The huge arc of the Carpathians begins beside the Danube, close to Bratislava, and stretches trough the length of Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. Most of the ski resorts are concentrated through the northern mountain ranges such as the High and Low Tatras, Small and Big Fatra, West Tatras and through the Orava Region. The ski season is typically from the end of November till the last week of March. Skiers will find the best conditions in the Low Fatra, Big Fatra, West Tatras and the Low Tatras Mountains, which offer beautiful slopes and trails for skiers of all categories as well as great facilities. Slovakia is also a great destination for snowboarders and offers very natural conditions for borders to enjoy. The most popular snowboard parks are located in the northern part of Slovakia and have hilly terrains, little bit edge and lots of facilities for free-style tricks such as U-ramps, interesting artificial jumps and trails.

11.01.2022 SKI #AndorraLaVella The tiny mountain kingdom of Andorra has everything you desire for the perfect ski holiday Andorra, which is located in the Pyrenees and straddles the border between Spain and France, is a skier's paradise. It has a number of superb ski resorts, each one with its own character, and offers absolutely everything you could wish for. Furthermore, the interlinking of Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, El Tarter and Soldeu ski areas has resulted in Europe's largest ski... resort, Grandvalira. For anyone not using the slopes, the lack of facilities in the ski resorts can be a slight drawback, however, the main alternative is to stay in Andorra La Vella and benefit from all the recreational activities offered by Andorra's capital city. The new Funicamp 24-person gondola goes from Encamp, just up the road from Andorra La Vella to the heart of the Soldeu, Grau Roig and the Pas de la Casa area and only takes about 14 minutes. Buses also run to and from Andorra La Vella and Escaldes. Lying at the confluence of the Gran Valira, the Valira del Oriente and the Valira del Norte rivers, Andorra La Vella is dwarfed by stunning snow-capped mountains of up to 2500 metres high. The town itself has many attractions, with a big draw card being the duty-free shopping, but probably the most interesting place is the Caldea spa. The interior is laid out in a 'Hanging Gardens of Babylon' style, and the facilities are very impressive, including an indoor and outdoor pool, with fountains and waterfalls, saunas, hot-tubs, Turkish baths, hydrotherapy, sunbeds, massage and even a grapefruit bath! There is plenty of choice when dining out. Andorrans love seafood, and the traditional Catalan restaurants delight in providing it, which seems odd in the mountains; however it is delivered fresh from the coast daily. The apres ski is also well catered for with plenty of bars and nightclubs staying open until 4am. One thing to note, is that the clientele of Andorra La Vella is generally considered to be a more sophisticated bunch, and consists mainly of Andorrans and Spaniards, with the 'drink-until-you-drop' attitude of the mountain resorts in other European ski destinations rare.

10.01.2022 SKI #ROMANIA Romania is establishing itself as a popular cheap ski holiday destination, along with its' Eastern European neighbours, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Serbia. Skiers are treated to wide open beginner-friendly slopes, solid lift systems, reputable ski schools and a good choice of entertainment, all for much less than any of their Western counterparts, whilst experiencing a vastly different culture. Romania is a mystical country, full of fascinating folklore, wonderful got...hic architecture and incredibly warm, hospitable people. Ski areas in Romania include Predeal, the highest resort in the country at 1,100 metres, found in the Bugeci Mountains close to the major tourist attraction Peles Castle, which is set in an area of incredible natural scenic beauty. Sinai, known as the "Carpathian Pearl", and is the oldest resort in Romania. A charming place with facilities including 2 cable-cars taking skiers to a height of 2,000 metres, and offering the best après-ski in the country. However, by far the most popular resort, at least with international visitors, is Poiana-Brasov, within the Carpathian Mountains. This purpose-built resort, with its' extensive beginners slopes, excellent ski school and traditional bars and restaurants, is one of the most popular up-and-coming budget destinations around. It is here where you will find great skiing in a beautiful area stepped in legend. Open spaces alternate with pine woods and the well appointed hotels offer wonderful hospitality and warmth, all of which makes holidaying here in Poiana a real pleasure. The excellent layout of the ski runs allows advanced skiers and snowboarders to "let go" without fear of interfering with beginners and intermediates, and to master the more advanced techniques in a spectacular environment. If you can pull yourself away from the uncluttered, scenic pistes of the compact ski area, a visit to Bran Castle, home of the legendary Count Dracula is a must! It's mystique and the snow-covered slopes will throw you back in time to an era immersed in legend, where wolves hunt at night and their howls can be heard, as you lie snuggled up in bed at night in the heart of Transylvania.

09.01.2022 SKI #CZECHREPUBLIC Cheap as Chips" European ski destination To those who are not already familiar with it, The Czech Republic has a surprisingly large number of ski areas with more than 100 to choose from dotted all around the country, including many within easy reach of the German border or the historic and vibrant capital city of Prague.... Although skiing is generally located at relatively low altitudes compared to the Alps to the south, between 700 metres to 1300 metres above sea level, most resorts have a good snow record with the support of increasingly sophisticated snow making networks, allowing them to be able to offer good quality skiing, accommodation and aprés ski. Czech Republic's largest and most well-known ski resort is Špindleruv Mlýn, located in the heart of the 'Giant Mountains'. This resort has direct access to 26 kilometres of downhill skiing, with 21 individual pistes, served by 16 ski lifts. Although Australians are a novelty on the ski fields of Czech Republic, it's a far cheaper option than other European skiing destinations, including the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, as well as providing terrain far better than anything you will find here in Australia. This "cheap as chips" ski destination also offers miles of cross country skiing, sledding and tobogganing.

08.01.2022 SKI #PAMPOROVO #BULGARIA! Modern Ski Resort in the Heart of the Rhodopi Mountain Pamporovo is the most southern ski resort in Europe and is the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. It is 240 kilometres from Sofia and 85 kilometres from Plovdiv and is situated at the foot of peak Snejanka 1926 metres high. The altitude at the mountain is 1950 meters and the largest vertical drop is 476 meters. Pamporovo has an exclusive climate fe...aturing a soft winter with about 120 sunny days during the skiing period with the season starting from mid - December to mid - April. You'll find the average air temperature is - 3C and the gentle profile of the mountain with its rounded slopes and summits makes Pamporovo particularly suitable for beginners. But there are also difficult ski runs like the Giant Slalom run which is an excellent experience for every skiing expert. All major ski runs start from the peak of the mountain, where the TV tower is located and Pamporovo also has great off-piste skiing and snowboarding, however we recommend using a local guide when going off-piste.
