25.01.2022 This week I have been connecting with the elements and tapping into my own primal needs and wisdom. 24.01.2022 COVID-19 There is a lot of fear around - its true. Watching any media channels will do that. It is likely that eventually we will all be exposed to the virus and although it might not cause you much harm, if a large cluster were to contract it at the same time, there is not enough healthcare services available to those experiencing severe symptoms on top of an already strained medical system. So all of the cancellations of events, proposed closing down of schools/businesses ...are to help #flattenthecurve Even though you might be of optimal health - there are certain things to be concerned about, such as asymptomatic transmission to immunocompromised, the elderly, those with heart disease, diabetes or pre-existing lung conditions who are at greater severity risk. This image shows the key difference in symptoms between COVID-19 and influenza 98% of COVID-19 symptomatic patients have a fever, with dry cough and shortness of breath also common symptoms. Compared to those experiencing sore throat, body ache and nasal congestion which is more likely to be influenza. Asymptomatic patients may not exhibit symptoms until 48 hours later (even longer with some people). So if you have had exposure to a positive case, stay at home and self isolate. 24.01.2022 Rom-coms and Porn have conditioned us to think that good sex happens straight up with the right person They fail to show vulnerable chats about what people like, what they dont like, what are their desires, what are they wanting to try but perhaps have been too afraid to share, what trauma do they have and what parts of their body have they not fully embraced and need some extra love. I see this in the queer community with conversations with friends - an assumption that s...ex should automatically be amazing otherwise its a sign it isnt right. If there is a beautiful connection there but the sex isnt amazing straight up - dont push it away, communicate instead. Have the conversation, be open as to what youre wanting or not wanting - it wont break the mood, it will help deepen understanding and create even better sex. If youre someone who needs another level of connection before feeling comfortable with physical intimacy - try eye-gazing, breathe together, put on some sexy music and dance, run a bath, explore with your senses - smells, tastes, textured objects. While were at it - lets break away from orgasm = good sex... there is so much more to intimacy then the end result of orgasm.. If youre someone who feels they need some form of substance to be comfortable connecting - try having sober sex - it may feel very vulnerable and raw, but thats the beautiful thing about intimately connecting. If there is past trauma that has impacted your own sexual nature, I highly recommend seeking a therapist or working through this in other ways. 22.01.2022 FLOWER ESSENCES They hold a special place in my heart. Subtle, yet so powerful. I especially love to use them with people who are suffering emotionally - whether thats through lack of confidence, heartache, feelings of isolation, angry and resentful towards others, feelings of unworthiness etc.... This blend was made for a wonderful soul who experiences deep hatred and shame towards herself, constant negative self talk and feels stressed, anxious and depressed. She has been taking antidepressants for a while and although theyve helped a lot, they havent helped address these underlying beliefs and emotions. 22.01.2022 VULVA AND VAGINA What went through your mind when you read the words Vulva and Vagina? Did you envision these emojis and ? ... Did you feel uncomfortable, did you look away, did you change the wording in your head as you read the words? Or perhaps you felt nothing different or liberated? Majority of us have been conditioned to think these words as bad, dirty and will instead refer to them as private parts or down there. For my trans and non binary friends and followers - I know there may be significant reasons why you may feel uncomfortable reading these words and am not trying to dismiss those very justified feelings. For other Vulva owners though, I would like you to ask yourself why do you feel uncomfortable around this topic? Have you become disconnected and not given your vulva/Vagina the love they deserve? Have you given away their power to your partner/s? Was it shamed through your upbringing or through media exposure? Or perhaps there may be some unresolved trauma requires you to speak to someone who has experience in this area. I am going to be posting more content regarding sex, sexuality, sexual health, genitals and other areas of interest which I work with in my clinic. 22.01.2022 I know its a challenging time for many. Ive also been experiencing my own challenging moments from loneliness, uncertainty, a feeling of being lost and missing my freedom to just get up and go wherever or whenever I chose. But I have also experienced a lot of beauty arising from this situation. A return to simplicity.... My gratitude has increased exponentially My senses are heightened, I am seeing things more clearly and brightly, observing things more delicately and with curiosity. The subtle sounds, the flavored tastes. 22.01.2022 Chia and black sapote pudding Black Sapote, otherwise known as chocolate pudding fruit is delicious. If you havent tried it, grab some from your local markets while its still in season. Mix it with some coconut cream and make into a little mousse ... then layer it with chia pudding.... Those who know me well, know Im a chia fiend! Full of omega 3 (though this plant based form doesnt convert to DHA), protein, fibre, calcium, magnesium and antioxidants. I use it often for breakfast, morning tea, lunch or dessert. What a versatile little seed.. A lot of the Chia found in shops is imported - though the humble little seed is grown in my hometown Kununurra. 21.01.2022 I just love this from @keeleyshawart How are you? is definitely a go to question that I ask friends, strangers, clients. But I also understand this question can be quite overwhelming and hard to answer at times. So these are wonderful suggestions on other ways to curiously check in on someone. What are your top three feelings today?... Mine are tired, scattered and wanting to be in bed and wrap up in a cocoon (Im sure thats a feeling!)... Very different to my elation, bliss and contentment experienced yesterday after an insanely amazing massage. Its ok that our moods and feelings change from day to day - however it is good practice to not allow these feelings to consume us (practicing awareness, mindfulness and practices like RAIN can help this), however, people with certain diagnosed conditions may need some extra support. I used to think there was something wrong with me and my fluctuations, but now I realize that just is who I am and there is generally a message underneath all the feelings that I need to listen to. 19.01.2022 STRESS AND IMMUNE FUNCTION Youve probably heard that stress has a significant impact on the immune system. But have you wondered why this is? Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of psychological processes on the nervous system and the immune system. Stressful events and our emotional response to these trigger the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which provokes the release of several hormones including cortisol.... Stress also triggers us to enter a sympathetic nervous system (SNS) state also known as fight, flight and freeze. The opposing state is the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as rest, digest and sex. Due to this redirection of energy and blood flow, living in a constant SNS state leads to impaired digestive function, this means reduced nutrient absorption and increased inflammation which can further impair our immune function. It isnt as easy as telling your mind, emotions, body to not stress this attempt can lead to more stress being experienced because you believe you should not be stressed. Rather, practising kindness and compassion towards yourself during these times and taking some time out when needed. Gentle therapeutics like flower essences and herbal medicine may help to support the nervous system and help the stress response. 17.01.2022 YOU PUT WHAT IN YOUR WHERE? From bleach and pesticide sprayed tampons to fragrance scented body wash/soaps to toxic sex toys and thrush promoting lubricants. Have you thought about what materials you are putting inside your Vagina? Or what other chemicals/substances your vulva and vagina are being exposed to?... For my vagina/vulva owning friends and followers. Here are some things to be aware of If choosing to use tampons or pads, choose certified organic cotton products like @tomorganic . Other products are highly sprayed and contain plastic within the product, not only disturbing your own vaginal health but the environment also. Please do not wash your vulva area with scented and antibacterial soaps - water is fine for most people, however there are pH balanced herbal washes suited for the delicate vulva/vaginal microbiome area like @kolorex.anz . Let your vulva and vagina breathe occasionally - take your underwear off often. Purchase plant dyed and organic cotton or bamboo underwear rather than wearing synthetic material. Avoid any sex toys that are made from jelly rubber or PVC - the chemicals within these can leach out into your body and disrupt your hormones, they can also cause chemical burns to very sensitive areas. Avoid lubricants that contain glycerine (promotes yeast overgrowth and irritates/dehydrates mucosa), parabens (endocrine disrupter and disturbs hormones), propylene glycol (linked with BV). 16.01.2022 COULD YOUR TEA BE MAKING YOU SICK? Winter is pretty much here. And how nice is it to sit with a warm cup of herbal tea. People often become dehydrated during winter as were not wanting to drink as much water - herbal tea is a great alternative. But did you know there are some hidden nasties in your standard tea bags? Not to mention the chemicals leaching out of your kettle (if theres plastic within).... The majority of teabags are made from plastics - these leach into your water which you then ingest - hello xenoestrogens and hormone issues. They also are pretty crappy for the environment . Most paper tea bags are generally bleached, which also leaches into the water. Even your pre made organic tea bags may be plastic or bleached. Recommendations: Opt for loose leaf organic herbs in stainless steel tea strainers (preferable than silicone). Fill your own unbleached organic muslin cloth/organic cotton tea bags. Or if needing the easy option - choose ethical brands which state their teabags are plastic and bleach free. Some of these brands are Pukka, yogi, organic India, Gaia, Good Earth, Numi, EDEN organic, Buddha tea. Check websites if youre not sure. Get rid of plastic kettles. 12.01.2022 YEP TEA! When feeling a sniffle, a fever or overall aches - tell yourself YEP, it’s time for tea . Yarrow, Elderflower and Peppermint, an excellent traditional combination of herbs to overcome colds and flus, it’s also pretty damn tasty!... Yarrow (Achillea millefolium): has anti inflammatory, stimulating diaphoretic and antipyretic actions. This prevents body temperature from getting too high in fever situations through stimulating circulation, opening pores and allowing the release of excess heat. It is also wonderful for women’s health and digestive issues. Elderflower (Sambucus nigra): a relaxing diaphoretic and anticatarrhal which is excellent for sinusitis and congestion, it relaxes the pores and reduces resistance to increased circulation. Peppermint (Mentha piperita): another diaphoretic (stimulating and relaxing) it also has carminitive properties and is great for digestive complaints and dymenorrhoea (painful periods). Caution with iron supplementation close to having the tea as Peppermint can inhibit the absorption. 12.01.2022 HOW’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO ALCOHOL ? Last week marked 3 years since I’ve had an alcoholic beverage. This isn’t to say I’ve been completely alcohol free, I have still been having alcohol in other medicinal forms like herbal medicine and flower essences . I would never have identified as an alcoholic, but there was certainly an unhealthy attachment to alcohol for most of my teen/adult life. Which most people I speak with can relate to.... It’s been a ride of a time. There have been many highs but definitely lows as I learnt to self soothe in other ways rather than turning to alcohol to numb (or enhance) any pain I was feeling. One of the greatest thing that has come away from my stint off the booze is the self awareness I have. Getting to know who I truly am, rather than spending a lot of the time in this altered state of someone I’ve never met. Other things I’ve experienced whilst not drinking Increased confidence, self love and acceptance of self Getting more in touch with my emotional state rather than avoiding and numbing through my alcohol use Saving a shit load of money through not drinking or needing taxis Becoming even more social, attending gigs and events sober Connecting with people on a deeper level Feeling healthier mentally, emotionally and physically Not wasting days feeling hungover I don’t think alcohol is a bad guy as such. It’s more the attachment some of us have with it. For many people, their relationship with it is just fine and they can enjoy a drink without any negative effects. For anyone that’s contemplating having a break away from booze or other substances though, I highly recommend it. If you have chronic alcohol addiction though, going cold turkey is NOT advised, speak to your GP before stopping. One of my biggest passions is to help support people with their addictions or attachment issues. This can be to substances, food, thoughts, emotional states, belief systems or people. 12.01.2022 WHAT IS NATUROPATHY? It’s a question I get asked a lot. And after all this time, I still find it hard to explain in a handful of words. Naturopathy is a holistic system of healthcare which focuses on identifying and treating the underlying cause of disease and ill health.... The body possesses an inherent ability to heal itself - always trying to come back to a state of homeostasis or balance. Sometimes it may need extra support along the way. We use a combination of evidence based research and traditional knowledge when it comes to treatment. Naturopathic medicine helps support the bodies natural ability to heal itself through the use of gentle therapeutics. Individualised treatment plans are tailored to your needs and may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, nutrient supplementations, herbal medicine, energetic medicine such as flower essences or homeopathics or through body work. Rather than symptom prescribing (though this can sometimes be necessary for the short term), we work to address the underlying/root cause of what is happening for you. 11.01.2022 NATURE RESET As chaos continues to circle amongst the collective, it’s important to reset, switch off and come back to simplicity at times. This looks differently for everyone. Nature immersion is my reset.... It helps me quieten the monkey mind. Helps me let go of the attachments to things, thoughts and ideas. Reminds me of what is really important. Heightens the gratitude and connection I have for the land and those in my life. Barefoot rock hopping adventures - highly recommend if you haven’t done before. 08.01.2022 It is an uncertain time about what we should be doing to help protect ourselves and our family. Chemists/health shops are sold out of anything immune related - plus self prescribing can also be quite dangerous particularly if having high doses of certain nutrients, so this isnt recommended. However - food and self care (and self isolation) are your greatest tools in this scary time. The shops may be running low on certain things, but its a great time to improvise, try new r...ecipes, check what local farmers are around who will deliver fresh produce. The infographic lists some important nutrients for immune health with some sources - but the biggest tip is to eat a whole food colourful diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Get good quality sleep - taking time off from devices before bed, avoiding blue lights and switching on airplane mode. Get fresh air, spend time in the backyard if you have one. Connect with loved ones through FaceTime or over the phone. This is the perfect time to go inward and do things that youve been to busy to do - read, write, draw, create, listen to music, dance, cook, play, garden, make love, have a bath, meditate, sit with yourself. 08.01.2022 Do you experience Sexual Shame? Sexual shame can occur for a number of reasons and is something that most people dont talk openly about. I will share my own sexual shame stories in a future post. Some of the reasons Ive discovered as to why people experience this include... Sex not being talked about as kids or if you were told off for touching and exploring yourself as a child. Learning Sex Ed at school which scarred you for life and didnt educate about pleasure and intimacy. Through trauma that youve experienced. Due to your sexual orientation or your gender identify. From contracting an STI. From experiencing thrush, bacterial vaginosis or another form of vaginal microflora imbalance causing changes in discharge and smell. Through experiences of goal orientated sex which may have not gone to plan. Through erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation or an inability to experience orgasm. Through watching porn and realising you look different or abnormal to what is shown. Having low self esteem, confidence and body image issues which led you to feel uncomfortable being naked. If youve never queried it before, check in with yourself where your shame comes from. Just through self enquiry alone may have the biggest impact and change for you. If there is significant trauma, I highly recommend working with a therapist and/or body/energy worker that you resonate with. And no matter where the shame stems from, you are 100% worthy of experiencing pleasure with yourself and others. Please dont give up thinking theres something wrong with you, that its too hard or that youve just gotten used to it. Youre an incredible being and deserve all of the juiciness that life has to offer. There are many things to help support you on this path. 08.01.2022 ESSENTIAL OILS AND WHY I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM INTERNALLY One of the first things that I usually hear upon telling someone I’m a Naturopath is how much they love essential oils. There is an assumption that Naturopaths use essential oils in practice. This is far from the case for most Naturopaths I know. There’s a really big difference between herbal medicine and essential oils. Herbal medicine uses the whole plant (in most cases) to extract out multiple beneficial constit...uents - the compounds of the plants that do all of the good stuff . Essential oils use a really large quantity of plant material to extract only the volatile oils and not all of the other parts of the plant, this makes them incredibly potent . And is why they’re amazing to diffuse and use as fragrance . However, internal ingestion of essential oils can be doing a lot more damage to your health than you might realise . A lot of essential oils have an antimicrobial effect - great for cleaning surfaces, but if you’re ingesting these - you’re killing off your delicate and extremely important gut bacteria (not just the bad ones) . Not to mention the damaging effect on your mouth, oesophageal and gut mucosa lining. Internal use of essential oils can also lead to impaired central nervous system, seizures, kidney failure and liver damage. The only people who should be recommending any essential oils internally are trained aromatherapists and these are generally rare cases or only short term with specific recommendations. Please don’t take this advice from a Doterra or Young Living representative unless they are trained aromatherapists. Please also don’t believe that your oil is superior to others and is safe to use internally - in this case the opposite is true, the more pure and potent the oil, the more damaging it can be as it’s not diluted. I will do future posts going more in-depth about essential oils and their effects. If you do use essential oils internally, my aim is to give you information so you can make informed decisions, rather than judging or shaming as we don’t know what we don’t know. If you want to continue to use oils internally, that is completely your choice, I can direct you to places where there is content for safer ingestion if you like. 08.01.2022 NATURE RESET As chaos continues to circle amongst the collective, its important to reset, switch off and come back to simplicity at times. This looks differently for everyone. 06.01.2022 YEP TEA! When feeling a sniffle, a fever or overall aches - tell yourself YEP, its time for tea . Yarrow, Elderflower and Peppermint, an excellent traditional combination of herbs to overcome colds and flus, its also pretty damn tasty!... Yarrow (Achillea millefolium): has anti inflammatory, stimulating diaphoretic and antipyretic actions. This prevents body temperature from getting too high in fever situations through stimulating circulation, opening pores and allowing the release of excess heat. It is also wonderful for womens health and digestive issues. Elderflower (Sambucus nigra): a relaxing diaphoretic and anticatarrhal which is excellent for sinusitis and congestion, it relaxes the pores and reduces resistance to increased circulation. Peppermint (Mentha piperita): another diaphoretic (stimulating and relaxing) it also has carminitive properties and is great for digestive complaints and dymenorrhoea (painful periods). Caution with iron supplementation close to having the tea as Peppermint can inhibit the absorption. 06.01.2022 FEVER We see regular advertising of reducing fevers and powering on. But has this advertising led you to defy your bodies natural defense system? Fever is a natural and beneficial immune response which occurs as our Hypothalamus increases our core body temperature to help fight off infection and build stronger immunity. Fevers may also occur due to burns, heatstroke, exertion, dehydration and post vaccination.... Fevers shouldnt be suppressed unless dangerously high and for very young infants. Suppression of fevers through the use of paracetamol prevents the body from destroying the pathogen, making the immune system work harder and leading to a longer lasting infection. There are certainly times where paracetamol is indicated. Speak to your GP to find out at what temperature to intervene if its getting too high. As a guide: 38.3 for infants, 39.4 for children and 40 degrees for adults. If other symptoms such as vomiting, headache with neck stiffness or strong mood disturbances are present - consult your GP or 24 hour nurse hotline. If not extremely high, allow the fever to run its course. Ways you can help to support the fever: . 05.01.2022 HOWS YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO ALCOHOL ? Last week marked 3 years since Ive had an alcoholic beverage. This isnt to say Ive been completely alcohol free, I have still been having alcohol in other medicinal forms like herbal medicine and flower essences . I would never have identified as an alcoholic, but there was certainly an unhealthy attachment to alcohol for most of my teen/adult life. Which most people I speak with can relate to.... Its been a ride of a time. There have been many highs but definitely lows as I learnt to self soothe in other ways rather than turning to alcohol to numb (or enhance) any pain I was feeling. One of the greatest thing that has come away from my stint off the booze is the self awareness I have. Getting to know who I truly am, rather than spending a lot of the time in this altered state of someone Ive never met. Other things Ive experienced whilst not drinking Increased confidence, self love and acceptance of self Getting more in touch with my emotional state rather than avoiding and numbing through my alcohol use Saving a shit load of money through not drinking or needing taxis Becoming even more social, attending gigs and events sober Connecting with people on a deeper level Feeling healthier mentally, emotionally and physically Not wasting days feeling hungover I dont think alcohol is a bad guy as such. Its more the attachment some of us have with it. For many people, their relationship with it is just fine and they can enjoy a drink without any negative effects. For anyone thats contemplating having a break away from booze or other substances though, I highly recommend it. If you have chronic alcohol addiction though, going cold turkey is NOT advised, speak to your GP before stopping. One of my biggest passions is to help support people with their addictions or attachment issues. This can be to substances, food, thoughts, emotional states, belief systems or people. 04.01.2022 ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS Do you drink diet drinks? Or have artificial sweetener in your life? This is generally included in any product labeled sugar free ie. gum, lollies, soft drinks, some medicine and store bought vitamins. Sometimes it can be hard to take the Naturopathic hat off in every day scenarios, not approaching things with judgement, but rather curiosity. I often find myself questioning the why, what is going on beneath the picture that I am seeing.... I recently witnessed a woman drinking a diet drink, I could see she also had a subtle tremor in her hand as she lifted the bottle to her mouth and as she walked along. Although her situation may be completely irrelevant, it reminded me of the potential consequences of long term and high levels of artificial sweeteners including aspartame (equal, sugarella, nutrasweet) in your diet. Aspartame can inhibit the production and release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. This can lead to significant neurophysiological and other health conditions such as Headaches/migraines Learning problems Irritability, anxiety, depression Gut dysbiosis Tremors, seizures Increased risk of stroke Increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease Although I’m not a big fan of sugar, I would much prefer sugar consumption over artificial sweeteners. Though, these days there are many more alternatives on the market if you really need some form of sweetener. These include stevia, monk fruit, erythritol, rice malt syrup or go back to old favourites maple syrup, honey (locally sourced) and dates. This book crossed my path almost 10 years ago, when I was a very lost soul. Taking my love and passion for health and wellness on the road while having the freedom to discover new places and people. It is convenient for those who dont have the time to travel to the clinic whether thats from living far away or through a busy schedule.
