25.01.2022 August is Rural Road Safety Month, an important campaign aimed at improving regional and rural road safety across Australia. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation rural road crashes account for more than 65% of the Australian road toll, and the rate of serious road-related injury among residents in rural areas is nearly twice that of those in major cities. The impacts of a serious road injury can be far-reaching. In order to reduce the impact of road trauma year-on-year, we need to work as a community to increase awareness, improve driver education and take care on the roads. #ChooseRoadSafety

24.01.2022 Before you head out on your summer road adventure with friends this year, make sure you check out our safety tips for young drivers, to make sure you have a summer to remember for all the right reasons.

23.01.2022 Townsville retiree Norman Land’s property value plummeted $50,000 overnight after a toxic chemical, was found in his ground water supply, believed to have leaked from the nearby ADF base in Townsville. "I was devastated. It's just thrown all of my retirement plans into complete disarray," Norman said. Norman’s story is a stark reminder that big corporations unfortunately don’t always do the right thing, and that class actions are an effective way for battlers to hold them accountable.

22.01.2022 On Remembrance Day we will take a moment of pause to honour the sacrifices many Australians have made to serve their country. We thank them for their selflessness, take inspiration from their courage, and will be forever grateful. #LestWeForget

21.01.2022 We’ve launched a new class action against investment fund IPO Wealth on behalf of investors, many of which have lost their life savings because of allegedly misleading marketing from IPO Wealth who pitched themselves to the public as being similar to a term deposit. Queensland investor Gary Pearson said he had invested his lifesavings into the Fund after searching for term deposits online. That money that we had invested and lost was intended to go towards our three children to give them a much better financial start to their life than I had. But all that is gone now.

21.01.2022 This week is Asbestos Awareness Week, which reminds Australians to be asbestos aware before starting renovation works, as asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think. During the week, Asbestos Council of Victoria/GARDS Inc will be hosting a series of webinars about the impacts of asbestos exposure and strategies to stay safe and reduce exposure. The Asbestos Council of Victoria / GARDS is a not-for-profit organisation whose goal is to raise the level of asbestos awareness... in the community, industry and government by providing community education and support programs to the community and workplaces. The work they do is invaluable to the community and Slater and Gordon are very proud to support them. If you would like to register for a webinar or find out more information, see below.

21.01.2022 #LungCancer is Australia’s biggest cancer killer yet there are only 12 full-time-equivalent specialist lung cancer nurses in #Australia, for more than 13,200 Australians diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020 alone. Slater and Gordon support Lung Foundation Australia and the work of lung cancer nurses. #FairGoForLungCancer.

15.01.2022 As a workers compensation lawyer at Slater and Gordon Lawyers, I speak to injured workers everyday, and it is devastating to see and hear the effects a workplace injury has on not only them but their families. National #SafeWorkMonth is a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of ensuring all workers are able to carry out their work duties in a safe environment. For many people, a safe workplace means being able to do their job without risk of injury, whether that be... physical or psychological, and being able to return to their families at the end of their working day. Due to COVID-19, a large majority of workplaces have changed, seeing more people work from home than ever before. The impacts of COVID-19 mean workers and their employers need to ensure home offices have the correct ergonomic set ups, as well as considering the psychological impact working from home can have on many employees. 12.01.2022 New and learner drivers may face a higher risk of road trauma in the coming months, due to a lack of driving while supervised this year due to COVID restrictions. Now that most borders and businesses have reopened, there may be a lot more drivers on the road, putting pressure on learners. Young drivers are already at risk of being involved in road accidents and we know they are over-represented in road crash fatality and injury statistics. It is crucial that young drivers have the ability to get their hours up to 100 hours so they can apply for a provisional licence, and make up for lost time so they can be as safe as possible on the roads. - Far North Queensland associate Sarah Singh.

06.01.2022 Before COVID-19 hit, 76 year old widow, Jill Gatty had paid over $80,000 for what was supposed to be the ultimate cruise of her twilight years, with five months at sea on board the Sea Princess. But now, she's just left with a travel voucher and unanswered phone calls.

06.01.2022 "August is Rural Road Safety Month. It’s a timely reflection of the many people that have died or been injured on our regional roads. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, rural road crashes account for more than 65% of the Australian road toll and the rate of serious road-related injury among residents in rural areas is nearly twice that of those in major cities. Unfortunately, this is not a surprise to me as a personal injury lawyer in a regional town, I have seen many people suffer serious injuries as a result of an accident. The importance of road safety cannot be downplayed and we all need to remember the real human toll it can cause. Sue Emery, Principal Lawyer Motor Vehicle Accidents

03.01.2022 "As a Personal Injury lawyer, every day I speak to injured Australians whose lives have been adversely affected because of injuries that they have suffered at work. Sadly, many of the injuries could have been avoided. During National #safeworkmonth this October, we should all take time to reflect on our own work practices to help reduce safety risks and hazards that may be present in our workplaces. Because nobody should be injured at work." - Campbell Woollacott, Lawyer - Workers' Compensation #safetytogether Safe Work Australia

03.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: LNP COMMIT NOT TO STRIP CTP RIGHTS FOR INJURED QLD ROAD USERS Cyclists, motorcyclists, unions, allied health professionals, community groups and ...lawyers have had a significant win, receiving commitments from both major parties not to strip rights for injured Queensland motorists. The Save Our CTP Coalition launched in July to campaign to protect the legal rights of all Queensland road users in the State’s CTP scheme, after major insurers RACQ and Suncorp tried to overhaul the scheme to boost their bottom lines and remove common law rights. Save Our CTP Coalition Director Simon Morrison today thanked the LNP for its commitment and for standing up for Queensland road users. The Save Our CTP Coalition thanks the LNP for its written commitment to not strip CTP rights for injured Queensland road users, Mr Morrison said. Queensland has one of the best and most affordable CTP schemes in Australia it is a scheme that all Queenslanders can be proud of and one we should continue to fight for in making sure we continue to have the best scheme in Australia. Stripping common law rights and changing to a no-fault scheme would have meant all road users paid more and insurers would also have more control over compensation for injured people, without oversight from the courts, Save Our CTP Coalition Director Karen Murphy said. We are very pleased that the LNP have sided with injured Queensland road users and that the push from RACQ and Suncorp to change our scheme has been rejected. Today’s response, and the existing commitment from the Palaszczuk Government, puts beyond doubt that our CTP scheme will be safe whoever forms Government following the upcoming election, Save Our CTP Coalition Director Michelle James said. The LNP have stood up for injured road users, by committing to protect our fair, affordable and nation-leading CTP scheme and we congratulate them for this, Save Our CTP Coalition member Steve Hoey of Therapy Solutions said. The LNP’s commitment follows an earlier commitment to the Save Our CTP Coalition from the Palaszczuk Government to not restrict legal rights for injured road users.

03.01.2022 Today is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day where bereaved parents from around the globe are encouraged to pause to remember their little ones who have died. As any parent who has suffered such a tragic loss knows, not a day goes by where that loss isn’t felt. Having a day dedicated to that reflection helps normalise that grief is ongoing. My little girl, Katlyn, died in 1996 when she was just 7 months old. Though many years have since passed, I... still remember the emptiness of those early days and wonder what her life would have been like, had things turned out differently. I draw from these very personal experiences as I help clients navigate their way following similar tragedies. Whether the loss is from miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of an infant, I find that society pressures parents to ‘get on with things,’ maybe because prolonged sadness makes others feel uncomfortable. Grief is a personal journey, however. Pressure to grieve in the ‘right’ way for the ‘right’ length of time, no matter how well-intentioned, just makes things so much worse. International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day should serve as a reminder that grief doesn’t have an expiration date, that parents don’t move on so much as they move forward, and that being allowed to reflect on that loss without judgment is critical to their healing. - Shari Liby, Principal Lawyer

01.01.2022 Many people still don’t understand the deadly risk asbestos poses, as renovations continue to increase around the country after COVID lockdowns. Practice Group Leader Joanne Wade is still seeing a lot of people diagnosed with mesothelioma and asbestos illnesses. Ms Wade said many being diagnosed now were exposed to asbestos fibres while performing home renovations in the 60s,70s and 80s.... Women are being diagnosed too. It is usually the husband carrying out the renovations but also their wives and children helping, standing by or sweeping up have been affected.
