22.01.2022 If you can spare a few dollars to support Perth Animal Rescue please do. Funding and adoptions are at a new low, so every cent really does count. We will have our own fundraising page up soon.

21.01.2022 It has been a time for contemplation recently here at Sleek, but in the mean time please share posts like this below.

20.01.2022 This is in Victoria, but for anyone interested in pound reform you may like to follow the proceedings.

19.01.2022 Continuing the theme of big black cats - Big Bear has graduated to a new bed and comes out to eat when his carer is in the room, which is great news. When first in, he allowed quite a lot of head scratches and head bumps. Right now he is still in the process of defending his territory a little and still gaining the confidence of his carer. This is a learning process for both him and carer but small steps make for good progress.

19.01.2022 It was a mother protecting her young. https://mountainlion.org/newsstory.php

17.01.2022 It is impossible for a lover of cats to banish these alert, gentle, and discriminating friends, who give us just enough of their regard and complaisance to make us hunger for more. Agnes Repplier Bruno Liljefors - Cat in the Summer Meadow, 1920.

16.01.2022 Tall ghost cat came to visit.

16.01.2022 Please read the post below - just click to open. Some of these things already happen in WA. But it is through efforts of volunteers not a planned strategy.

15.01.2022 Also how colony caretakers react when someone interferes with their cats! Just back off and we will pretend it never happened.

12.01.2022 This is the post that disappeared..all I can do is reshare it.

10.01.2022 This one is for Fiona who has a Big Bear Kitty, that thinks he might be a Proper Panther. He just needs to learn that he is not in charge and he will shrink back to regular House Panther size. Or, Fiona needs to grow bigger!

06.01.2022 This is quite a comprehensive survey on pet cat ownership in Perth. A little different from most. https://perthzoo.wa.gov.au/safe-cats-safe-wildlife

06.01.2022 Good reading for foster carers about eye contact. The first thing new carers often do is get up close and make 'kitty noises' and eye contact as they might with a baby. As far as the scared cat of kitten is concerned you might as well be saying 'yum, yum, yum. They very possibly think you have them because you want to 'eat them all up'. You have taken them from all they know. So, you are now the trauma they face. Learning how to 'cat' is part of helping them learn how to 'human'.

06.01.2022 this is probably the most important post i’ve ever made so if you care about the work i do, please take the time to read this- you guys, i am begging you. stop ...letting your cats reproduce. stop selling kittens, stop giving them away for free, stop making more cats suffer. you can say you’re giving kittens to good homes all you want, whatever helps you sleep at night. but the likelihood of them actually staying in that home, happy/healthy for the 20+ years cats live is just not likely. because the fact is, when people impulsively decide they want a kitten, they get on craigslist or facebook and they get a kitten. they don’t go to a shelter, because either 1. they know they won’t be approved or 2. they don’t want to wait because they have not thought the decision through nor do they care to. they’re not thinking about whether they can afford it longterm, if their landlord allows it, etc. all that matters is in that moment they want a kitten so they get a kitten. for the first few months, they love it and spoil it rotten and post all these cute pictures of it. and then as the kitten grows up, they begin to slowly lose interest in it. they don’t take it to the vet for vaccines or checkups- and they certainly don’t spay/neuter it. so eventually, the cat gets outside because yes, even indoor only cats will get outside if they aren’t fixed. their hormones will take over and they will almost always find a way out, despite your efforts to keep them in. they may run away completely, end up in a shelter, hit by a car, eaten by a coyote, shot by a crazy neighbor, or die from a terrible disease. all of these things are possible, but the one thing you can be certain of is THEY WILL REPRODUCE. your female cat will somehow, someway end up pregnant. she will have kittens that you will give to good homes but just like their mom, they will be bought on impulse by someone who probably shouldn’t have a cat. and they will never be fixed, just repeating the cycle. and your male cat will find a way outside and knock up an outside cat (or 10) whose kittens will be born on the streets where they will spend their lives suffering, fighting to survive, and reproducing until they die- also never fixed, just repeating the cycle. yeah sure, there will be a couple lucky ones that do end up in good homes where they get fixed and live out their 20+ years of life in one loving home. but it’s unlikely. and those few lucky ones don’t make up for the suffering that the majority will have to endure in their lifetimes. you guys, there are roughly 70 million cats roaming the streets in the united states. only 2% of those cats are spayed/neutered. not to mention, MILLIONS of cats and kittens are euthanized in shelters across the country each year. the reality is, there are not enough homes, shelters, rescues, or resources for the amount of cats that already exist. cat overpopulation is a CRISIS in this country. and it is OUR fault. it is time for us to take responsibility for this. we have got to do better. if your cat is not spayed/neutered, you are part the problem. can’t afford it? reach out. there are low cost options and some organizations that will even do it for free. and if you are feeding outdoor cats without fixing them, you are also part of the problem. reach out to your local shelters/rescues and ask about their TNR program. we will help you get them fixed. we are here to help, you guys. but we need you to do your part. this is not our mess to clean up, it is ALL OF OURS. so please educate yourselves, spread awareness, be responsible pet owners, reach out for help, ask questions and do your fucking part as a decent human being or kittens/cats will continue to suffer and die. that’s all there is to it. stop making excuses for being a shitty person. rant over. thanks for coming to my ted talk. 06.01.2022 Sadly we have not had any response to our seeking carers posts, so kittens like this cutie are still on the street. But why not just go and get them all anyway. Well, at some point a line has to be drawn. Do we have 478 cats and kittens in our houses or should we ask for help? Sadly, small independents when faced with this situation, don't have many alternatives. Again, - if we could give them to all the other rescues then we would. Timid and scared - these are the most in need kittens and cats. Helping these cats helps stop the cycle.

04.01.2022 Watch till the end to see how many colonies of cats this guy feeds - most people have no idea so many are in need.

03.01.2022 This story is why trust is lost by many; and why trust is misplaced by others. BELOW is from CHEYENNE SPEED (NSW) For the past month I had been feeding this beautiful pregnant mum and kittens from our local gym.... I then captured them all to try and get them rehomed to have a better life. I have been able to home the kittens(they were 5 months old)! And the pregnant mum had a home too! We took the pregnant cat who was about 1-2 weeks away from giving birth in to RSPCA Australia RSPCA NSW FOR A CHECK UP (they have Vet services at the location taken) We specifically told you we will take her back and look after her. She was just going in for a check up, you said you would keep her overnight just for observation (due to give birth in a week so wanted to check she was healthy and prepared for birth ) We were on the way to pick her up but you called and said you’ll keep her for a couple extra days to monitor her, we said that’s fine let us know when we can come collect her before she gives birth so she isn’t stressed. We didn’t get that call, we contacted you a few times to get updates because you hadn’t called but couldn’t get through and today you told us you EUTHANIZED HER AND HER KITTENS. I am absolutely heartbroken, I feel so incredibly guilty and I have been sitting on my floor in tears. I captured them for a better a life, we would have given this to her, BUT YOU TOOK THIS AWAY FROM HER AND US!! We ONLY took her to you for a check up, because you preach love and care for animals, we thought she would be safe. My whole dance studio was invested in these beautiful cats, they donated food and money to help these kittens and pregnant cat. I went there daily, sometimes twice a day to feed them. Your excuse you told us over the phone... she wouldn’t be domesticated. That wasn’t your call to make, WE TOLD YOU WE WOULD TAKE HER BACK, you were just supposed to do the check up. We need answers and you need to be held accountable. This post won’t bring her back but maybe it will highlight what you do behind the scenes. Don’t preach love and care for animals and decide to kill a cat and her kittens that were due to be born in a week when she had a home. I know we can’t save them all, but she was saved. I am so sorry to everyone and most of all sorry for this beautiful cat that never got the chance to have a forever home and be given the love she deserved. See more

02.01.2022 This is direct from Yvette who works with street cats in Narrogin, WA. Please read below starting from 'Let's try this'! This is why desexing programs are so important. Even if every cat or kitten cannot be taken off the street, they can be relieved of suffering that ongoing breeding brings. The struggle, surviving and the dying of malnourished mums and kittens is terrible. But it is not only the industrial areas - this happens in the suburbs too. People create these problems with pet cats left to roam undesexed. Then these cats wander into industrial areas or bushland as well and build the problem. Desex your cats!
