12.01.2022 What does SDA do? This is one day in the life of our Chairperson, Michelle Chadwick Queensland is creating a Genomic Support Network like there are in other states so I’ve been invited to take part in a Roundtable discussion to give my feedback etc. Then I go to the Adelaide Sleep Retreat where I will be one of the judges of the New Investigator Award (this is the 11th year that SDA has sponsored this award) and then right after that I have a meeting with Professor Sinthia B...osnic-Anticevich, Director of Development at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. There are no paid staff at SDA. Michelle volunteers her time and experience. SDA receives no funding. Membership and donations are needed to ensure there continues to be an organisation that represents people in the sleep disorder community. Membership is just $25 (there are discounts for 3 and 5 year membership). To join or make a donation please visit https://www.sleepoz.org.au/support-us If you have any trouble joining or donating please contact Gemma Bryce at [email protected]

08.01.2022 Sleep fragmentation causes hypersomnolence in OSA - not true according to the authors of a recent paper published in Sleep Medicine Reviews: Like most medical paradigms, the assertion that sleep fragmentation by arousals causes the hypersomnolence of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a hypothesis. To be valid, it must account for all observations that have subsequently accumulated over decades of OSA research. The sleep fragmentation paradigm is a dated, crumbl...ing hypothesis. The clinical observations that once made sleep fragmentation the obvious cause of hypersomnolence in OSA have been challenged by subsequent research. We will examine the origins of the sleep fragmentation paradigm and then consider the paradigm against the data of two large population-based studies of OSA, the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (WSCS) and the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS). We will show that the sleep fragmentation paradigm accounts for only some of the hypersomnolence identified in these studies, and we will present an alternative paradigm, unrelated to sleep fragmentation, that can account for all the hypersomnolence identified in these foundational studies of sleep medicine. https://reader.elsevier.com/reader/sd/pii/S1087079220301428

08.01.2022 Ever wondered what an oral appliance for sleep apnea is and how it works? Dr Damian Teo was live for us back in May for Sleep Apnea Awareness Day. He discussed what a MAS appliance is and how it works. How much they cost and what the pros and cons are between over the counter oral appliances vs custom made (by a dentist) and more. #sleepapnea #MAS #osa #oralappliance

06.01.2022 Volunteers with Sleep Apnea are needed for a Patient Survey "A Novel Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea". It will take approximately 8 minutes to complete the online survey. If you would like to find out more about the survey and/or take part, you can do so by selecting the following link https://unsw.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1SyppPbnEToGqUJ Researchers at UNSW are conducting a study about whether a theoretical new treatment system for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) ...would be acceptable to people with OSA. This theoretical treatment has two parts a one-off injection to the tongue that sensitises the tongue muscles to a specific type of light. The patient would then wear a mouthguard device at night that shines light on the tongue activating the muscles and keeping the airway open. Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary. If you are interested, the research project is looking for people who have been diagnosed with OSA who are willing to give their opinions about such a theoretical new treatment. This treatment does not yet exist.

05.01.2022 The Government will no doubt throw money at some of the suggested ‘Actions’ in this report without even a second thought to potential outcomes because it’s mental health yet they have completely ignored the recommendations of the #SleepHealthInquiry. Ironic considering you can’t have good #mentalhealth without good #sleephealth SDA spends a lot of time trying to help people on low incomes and pensioners who can’t afford sleep apnea treatment. After Fiona Martin MP mentione...d SDA in parliament recently we’ve had people tell us that pollies including Greg Hunt have referred them to SDA for help. Not sure why. Where would SDA get the resources to help people that can’t afford medical treatment? We don’t receive funding, have no support from the sleep apnea industry and we don’t have a magic wand. If you need help please consider joining SDA before reaching out Our resources are limited so we must consider our members needs first. And if you are going to contact your local member please remind them of recommendation 5 in the Sleep Health Inquiry final report. Link to recommendations in the comments below. And if they refer you to SDA please ask them why. Do they plan on providing us with funding so that we can develop sleep apnea treatment support programs? That would be awesome! https://www.pc.gov.au/inquir/completed/mental-health/report #SleepApnea #CPAP #MAS #OAS #sleepapneatreatment #Auspol
