25.01.2022 In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fift...h/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day. Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period. During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly. On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write. Happy 74th Birthday Dolly Parton!

She often returns to work with SLIDE to fulfil a mentorship role within the company to teach, choreograph and assist in directing rehearsals. Her interest lies in performing and creating contemporary dance, physical theatre and dance theatre and wants to collaborate with as many platforms as she can to create accessible, beautiful, powerful art. Millie's thoughts on the project, "Beam Me Up Kate is connecting industry professionals together and forging relationships which would have otherwise never have come about. It is a wonderful gift to be sharing my learning from WAAPA to young Territorians who are eager to be inspired and to encourage them to be brave in their pursuit of the arts. I am collaborating with SLIDE as a mentor, creator and performer and in all roles am being challenged in unexpected ways by people I admire and aspire to work with and dance like. It is truly wonderful to be employed within the community that inspired my love of dance, and then be doing so alongside the people who have shaped and guided my learning is a true privilege. This performance with SLIDE will mark my first professional dance job, and I am grateful to have been offered a space, in an environment which nurtures creativity, risk and individuality." Ms Millie, not only a striking, beautiful performer and human, but someone that always goes above and beyond what is expected of you - and that makes a world of difference to us! Thank you.

11.01.2022 Dancers thoughts on working via Zoom, with national choreographers Natalie Allen and Olivia Hendry, during the Beam Me Up, Kate creative development process........ Working with Natalie Allen and Olivia Hendry was insightful and enlightening; I was astounded by their creative approach to Beam Me Up Kate. Both Allen and Hendry came to each Zoom session with an abundance of ideas and abstract thoughts on how to portray Kate and Kenny to the audience. Allen chose to incorporate ...the essence of a woman into her choreography, requesting that Millie chose women that inspired her to use as stimuli. This instigated her movement and led to developing Kate as a powerful woman in the show. Hendry aimed to incorporate each layer of a relationship, creating a truthful and heartfelt depiction of love and separation. Allen and Hendry incorporated Millie, Jordan, Mickala and my ideas, ensuring that the movement resonated with us as dancers. I found it interesting to observe how choreographers are influenced by the dancers they are working with and I was impressed with their skill and professionalism. Each rehearsal fostered productivity and furthered my knowledge of the dance industry. Ruby Michael Company One dancer (photo by Courtney Davies Photography) Olivia Hendry produced some very interesting concepts to Kate & Kenny, she found unorthodox ways for our characters to establish a connection. Questions were posed as a starting point for exploration, so the process involved Millie and I undertaking a lot of writing initially. Our responses, both written and physicalised, underpinned the story and movement material between Kate & Kenny. I enjoyed the process with Olivia, as it was a different methodology informing my professional practice. It is an approach I will engage and utilise in my next choreographic process. The unusual creative method for this project was a challenge without being in person with Olivia, with every zoom rehearsal creating vocabulary through video chat. I found this type of development challenging but intriguing, having to create through a screen and trying to show and share movement in a confined space. But I really enjoyed working with Olivia, she is a truly creative mind and has a bright future in this industry. I hope I get to work with her again soon. But next time I want it to be in person. 08.01.2022 And finally.... Joanna Noonan; the untiring, spirited visionary. Joanna is one of the many richly creative artists who call Darwin home and is the resident Choreographer, Artistic Director and driver of SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre. As a long-term local artist and educator, she has created opportunities for young and emerging dance artists in the Northern Territory for years, as she is acutely aware and deeply proud of the bubbling talent and rawness of Territory dancers. Alwa...ys driven to express herself through dance theatre, her repertoire has a distinct choreographic language a latitude of movement and musicality supported by a strong theatrical sensibility and a keen sense of humour and wit. Some of her work connects to the problems of the real world like her Awareness Trilogy, TIME, BRAVE and SECRETS. While others are shaped by a simple journey or narrative, but all possess a richness, complexity and texture that are undeniably human. Making dance work, in isolation, both in a regional sense and during covid times, is challenging. Beam Me Up, Kate is Joanna’s reminder to us that we need to remain hopeful, stay human and always laugh. As Dolly Parton said, A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink. Bravo Joanna you’ve got this gurrl!

04.01.2022 Cavenagh Theatre Trust, a steadfast arts legacy.. Established in 1950 under the name Darwin Amateur Musical Comedy Society, with the name change occurring in the early 70’s forming what was known as Cavenagh Theatre Company. This organisation was the backbone and initial amateur theatre company in Darwin, producing local theatre productions for our community. For over 70 years the company shaped the arts scene, growing opportunities for artists and local production crew. By ...2007 the company folded but continued in a Theatre Trust capacity acknowledging the need to support and encourage artists and non-funded groups to continue creating artistic works for Darwin audiences. SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre would like to thank Cavenagh Theatre Trust, for their valuable support of Beam Me Up, Kate and the merit they place on the work that Joanna Noonan has been doing in the Territory.
